AKC Exhibitor News

Four-to-Six Month PuppyThe Four-to-Six Month Puppy competition will be open to dogs that are at least four months of age but under six months on the day of the event. Classes will be offered for AKC recognized breeds and varieties as well as Miscellaneous and FSS breeds. Professional handlers are not permitted to exhibit in this class.

Entrants in the Four-to-Six Month Puppy class will compete for Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. Group and Best in Show Puppy competition will also be offered.

Four-to-Six Month Puppy competition will take place in a separate ring(s) from the regular class judging in order to avoid delays in the judging of regular classes. Classes will not be divided by sex in this competition.

Open Show An Open Show is an informal American Kennel Club sanctioned conformation event at which dog clubs, judges, stewards, and exhibitors and their dogs gain experience needed for licensed events.

All-breed clubs must offer classes for all registerable breeds and varieties and for purebred dogs of any breed eligible for entry in the Miscellaneous Class and all FSS recordable breeds.

Classes offered include: • 4-6 Month Puppy Class • 6-9 Month Puppy Class • 9-12 Month Puppy Class • Open Class

Licensed and member clubs may hold two sanctioned Open Shows each year in addition to their two championship shows.

Certificate of Merit (CM) Certificate of Merit points can be earned in the Four-to-Six Month Puppy class at a regular all-breed or specialty show, at an Open Show and in Miscellaneous classes. The Certificate of Merit, a suffix title, requires 15 points awarded in accordance with the following point structure.

Dogs Competing Points • 2 1 • 4 2 • 8 3 • 12 4 • 16 5

AKC Owner/Handler SeriesThe AKC Owner/Handler Series will showcase owner handled dogs at well attended dog shows geographically distributed across the country. The AKC Owner/Handler competition will be conducted following Best of Breed judging in each breed ring. All dogs in the BOB competition (including WD & WB) will stay in the ring after the judge makes their placements in BOB competition. The ring steward will ask all professional handlers to leave the ring and then judge will then select the Best Owner Handler (BOH).

For the complete rules and regulations for the Four-to-Six Month Puppy Class, Open Show and Owner/Handler Competition, please visit http://www.akc.org/pdfs/about/board_minutes/1011.pdf. The regulations begin on page 13.

Geocaching at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park by Julie Swinland

It was a cool and blustery day at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park today, but what can one expect on Oct 16 in Minnesota. It was sunny though, with a bright blue sky and nice puffy white clouds overhead. We warmed up quite nicely after a little bit as we hiked through the woods in search of our quest, the last cache in a multi cache series of 4 caches. I found the first two which gave us the coordinates of each upcoming cache in the series. I believe Beth Hatfield found the 3rd and we all spotted the final cache, an ammo box hidden under some wood in a clump of trees.

There were only four brave souls in our little group, Julie Swinland and Xena, Beth Hatfield coordinator of the outing and her Xena, Sandy Heinz and Jetta, and Sandy’s brother Steve Johnson and the honorary GSD Jake (Lab). Since we found the final cache relatively quickly we decided to go in search of the waterfal in the park. So we probably covered about 3 miles before we came back and had a great lunch in the pavillion. Beth provided the main course and packets of trail mix. She is a great coordinator and maybe we can get her to organize our next geocaching event next

spring. Each participant recieved a collapsible dog bowl which was purchased several years ago for the geocaching event that was called off due to weather. We have some left over for our next geocaching event in the spring. That will take place in a different state park.

German Shepherd Dog Club of Minneapolis and Saint Paul

Board Meeting MinutesOctober 11, 2011

Present: Julie Swinland, Eileen Varhalla, Chris Duffy, Roger Salava, Linda SalavaAbsent: Lisa Marie Fortier, Ginny Altman

I. Call to Order - 6:07 pmII. Reports of Officers

a. President – Julie Swinland No report

b. Vice President – Eileen VarhallaNo report

c. Secretary – Chris DuffyCorrespondence: A call was received from a member who is not receiving a Shep-o-Gram in the mail. Chris returned the call using the phone number he left on his message (no name) but found that it was a non-working number (probably likely that she wrote it down incorrectly when taking the message off voicemail.) There was discussion about the Shep-o-Gram being available to everyone online and only a few people now receive it in the mail.

Chris also received a call from a man who is looking for a pet-type German Shepherd (husband Bill took the message). He lives on a farm, so the dog may do some dog-type farm work (a little herding perhaps?), but not anything heavy. Mostly, he would like a companion dog. There was discussion about what information to give out to individuals with these inquiries.

d. Treasurer’s Reporter – Roger Salava

As of Sept 20, 2011, the Money Market account balance was $5,717,84. The checking account balance, as of Sept 30, was $6,785.82.

As of end of September, no income figures yet from the Herding Trial.

Profit from the Maturity, after subtracting out expenses for judges, etc., was $3,522.56.

e. Auditing Committee – Roger Salava and Mike MetzThe next audit is due in February.

III. Committee Reportsa. Membership - Linda Salava

The subject of membership packets was discussed. We need to develop materials

to include in the packet, such as a booklet that includes by-laws and standing rules. The cover letter should include information on rules for becoming a full member, information on the Club website and how it, and the Shep-o-Gram, can be accessed. The packet should also contain information about when regular activities start. Linda will talk to Ann Jeddeloh, who has already volunteered to do some work on this.

b. Shep-o-Gram – Julie Swinland - September/October issues were combined last time.

c. Training Director – Julie Swinland – no report

d. Herding Trial – Zoa Rockenstein – no report

IV. Old Businessa. Specialty 2012

i. Report on fairgrounds – Roger Salava

ii. Show secretary and chair – needed ASAP. Deadline for the application is December.

b. Banquet – January, 2012All venues are currently available. We need to find a place that is open between noon and 4. Gulden’s was mentioned as a good possibility. Cost per plate was $19.00 plus a 20% gratuity for Tartan Park.

c. Geocaching – This Sunday at 9 AM.

d. Match Nov 18 – We need a chair and budget. We have a judge for rally (but not for conformation).

e. Holiday Pot Luck in conjunction with December membership meeting. Ann Jeddeloh has volunteered to coordinate. Kara Salava may do pictures, as in the past.

V. New Business

Verna Kubik brought up the question of whether show dates in 2013 should change. It was decided that this should come up for a vote in November, as the Board would like members to have a voice in this decision. There are pluses and minuses to changing; if people want to change the date, they should suggest alternatives.

III. Committee Reportsa. Membership – Linda Salava

Currently, there are 180 members. No new members this month. Ann Jeddeloh has volunteered to send out a small packet of information to new members. We want to be sure that no prospective or new members fall through the cracks – we need to find out what their needs and/or wants are to retain them.

i. 2012 SpecialtyWe need a chair and a secretary! The paperwork is due in December, so we need to get going on this now. It was moved and seconded and passed to hold the 2012 show on the same weekend as before at the Farmington site. Roger will get the contract completed. We will discuss and vote at the November meeting on the possibility of moving the show dates to a different weekend . If you care about this come to the meeting for the discussion. Possibilities are a different weekend in June or a fall date. If fall is chosen it would have to move back to spring any year that we have a futurity.

j. 2012 Herding TrialWe also need a chair and secretary for the Herding Trial (next fall). Verna Kubik suggested that we wait until we get financial info from this year’s Herding Trial ( not yet available). We need to find a new venue in 2012 – the old one is not available next year.

k. Match – November 18, 2012 – Kathy DuVall Is Co-Chair with Denise Gilbertson and Jan Anderson (Jan can do paperwork if needed)We have Obedience and Rally judge, but still need a conformation judge
