SOFTWARES
WHAT IS A SOFTWARE Software, by definition, is the collection of
computer programs, procedures and documentation that performs different tasks on a computer system. The term 'software' was first used by John Tukey in 1958. At the very basic level, computer software consists of a machine language that comprises groups of binary values, which specify processor instructions.
The processor instructions change the state of computer hardware in a predefined sequence. Briefly, computer software is the language in which a computer speaks.
TYPES OF SOFTWARES The two main classifications of software that all
programs fit under are:1. System software2. Application software
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
System software is the backbone of a computer. While on one hand it regulates the operation of the computer hardware to perform the necessary user-oriented functions, it also provides the basic framework to enable smooth running of the various application software on the other hand.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE
System software is the backbone of a computer. While on one hand it regulates the operation of the computer hardware to perform the necessary user-oriented functions, it also provides the basic framework to enable smooth running of the various application software on the other hand.
To put it simply, a system software is the basic platform upon which the computer runs its hardware and enables the user to derive full computing functionality of the various application software and get his work done.
System software can be classified. These are:- 1. Operating system – It acts as a interface
between user and computer.2. Language processors – It converts our
programming language into machine language .
3. The operating system (OS) which allows the user to interact with the hardware and get the desired outcome by carrying data between RAM and storage disks, displaying the desired result on the output device (monitor/LCD) and by acting as the platform to allow various other system and application software to run on the computing device;
4. Various utility software that regulate the computer functionality by analyzing its performance, configuring and optimizing its processes and, thereby, carrying out system maintenance functions.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
An application software helps the user execute either a single or a multitude of tasks. The different types of application software include database software, multimedia software, word processing software, etc. These software manipulate text, graphics, etc. Some of these software are dedicated only to one type of tasks, while there are others who do a multitude of tasks.
Types of Application Software:1. Word Processing Software: Allows users to
create, edit a document. Example: MS Word, Word Pad etc.
2. Spreadsheet Software: Allows users to create document and perform calculation. Example: Excel, Lotus1-2-3 etc.
3. Database Software: Allows users to store and retrieve vast amount of data. Example: MS Access, MySQL, Oracle etc.
4. Presentation Graphic Software: Allows users to create visual presentation. Example: MS Power Point
5. Multimedia Software: Allows users to create image, audio, video etc. Example: Real Player, Media Player etc.
