There is a bat for every type of swing. DeMarini designed its 2013 fastpitch line to accommodate anytype of hitter.

That is the beauty of improved technology that helped create stronger bats with a lighter feel. “We are thrilled with this year’s launch. DeMarini’s 2013 lineup is ready to take over the fastpitch

game and rule on another level,” said Sara Lawhead, who serves as the head of DeMarini/WilsonFastpitch Promotions. Each of DeMarini’s fastpitch bats features a new TR3 F.L.O. (Fused Layer Optimized) composite layout, which enables weight to be more evenly distributed from handle to barrel.

“This naturally chaotic, random fusing of carbon fibers creates a more compact carbon whichenables us to design a stronger and lighter bat than ever before. This stronger design allows us todistribute the weight evenly throughout the bat,” Lawhead said. “A more balanced bat producesfaster bat speeds. So you can generate even more power.”

CF5 and Insane bats, for example, vary slightly in look and design but create similar results. The CF5 -10 (featuring a white barrel) has evenly distributed weight across the barrel. TheCF5 -10 Insane (featuring a red barrel) has more weight distributed in the end of the barrel, giving it a ended load feel.

“Our line is developed knowing that there isn’t one bat for every softball player, butthere is one brand for every softball player,” Lawhead said. “No matter what kind of swingyou have, or what kind of feel you are looking for, you can find it in our 2013 model line.

“Just ask the heavy hitters and MVP’s of National Pro Fastpitch like NatashaWatley or Caitlin Lowe what bat they trust in their hands.”

That is why so much attention was paid to making the bat fit the swing. Powerhitters often prefer the CF5, including the Queen of the Diamond (Hope Edition),which was created to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Proceeds from batsales are donated to help find a cure for cancer.

The Vendetta C6 is popular among young players because its compositebarrel combined with a patented Internal Rails Hybrid Handle reduces vibrationand takes the sting out of making contact without compromising the ability totake a rise ball deep over the left field fence.

The features “work together to give developing players the best of bothworlds when it comes to performance and comfort,” Lawhead said. “Theygain confidence that they won’t get rung up on an inside or outside pitchand it reduces sting without impacting performance.”Players from the ASA travel circuit to top collegiate programs andNational Pro Fastpitch have embraced DeMarini’s 2013 bats and laudthem for their feel and performance.

“The talk around the diamond this summer as well as withour pros and our top collegiate teams that we test these bats withhas been that our new 2013 model line is noticeably better andjust keeps elevating their play,” Lawhead said. “All of our playersand teams have been ecstatic with the new bats and how wehave been able to improve not only the raw power andperformance, but also to give the players a much morecomfortable and responsive feel. “Our players demand the best, and it’s always great to hearfrom them that our best just keeps getting better,” she said.“For every type of hitter, for every type of swing, there is aDeMarini bat that has been fine-tuned to elevate theplayer’s play. Our lineup is deep and there is an option forall hardcore fastpitch players.”

The Tulsa Elite 95 won 78 games during the tournamentseason with more than half of those coming during aremarkable 46-4 stretch.

By Dave Utnik

The celebration had to begin with a dog pile. That mucheveryone agreed upon.

All 12 members of Tulsa Elite ‘95 made thatcommitment long before the team ever arrived inMontgomery, Ala. for the ASA 16U National Championships.

It even became a slogan of sorts for a squad that nearlycalled it quits last fall before choosing - wisely it turned out- to restructure itself instead.

“The players developed a team saying of ‘Dog pile’ whenthey came together with all their hands in a circle before, during and after games,” assistant coach Joe Gho said. “Thereason for this was because the ultimate goal at the end ofnationals is to be in a position of performing a dog pile, which means you won the National Championship.”

The dog pile served as incentive for Tulsa Elite followinga tumultuous 2011 travel season that was marred by acareer-ending injury, player defections and a disappointing97th place finish at nationals.

More importantly, it helped the players bond as theremnants of a storied Oklahoma STARZ program mergedwith Tulsa Elite to create a championship season and theSoftball Today Magazine 16U Team of the Year.

“The team came close to disbanding,” Gho said. “Butafter many discussions, it was finally decided that theywould keep the team together.”

So they accepted an offer from Tulsa Elite generalmanager Jeff Filali to join the organization with Gho andSteve Bevan sharing the coaching duties, along withKelly Beason.

And by Memorial Day, the dog pile was a full-fledgedrally cry.

“In the world of competitive softball, with all theobstacles a team faces, it can be difficult to mesh togetherdifferent player personalities and all that comes with it.These players were truly the epitome of a team with theirhard work and dedication,” Gho said. “They came togetherovercoming adversity and a relentless travel schedule towin many well-deserved prestigious championshipsduring the season.

“All teams at the beginning of the season have highexpectations, but to think what this team hasaccomplished during this year and to top it off with the ASA16U National Championship is truly remarkable and adream come true.”

The Tulsa Elite 95 won 78 games during the tournamentseason with more than half of those coming during aremarkable 46-4 stretch that culminated with a dog pile atthe national championships.

They placed among the top three in eight competitions, including an 18U event on Memorial Day weekend thatserved as a sign of things to come.

“After winning the ASA KC Memorial WeekendTournament by going undefeated, things started to cometogether and fall in place,” Gho said.

And all 12 players -- Kaitlin Beason, Mallory Collins,Kaylor Battiest, Taylor McElhaney, Nicole Nease, EmilyBevan, Jessica Boone, Kelsey Goodwin, Kelsey Leach,Mikelynn Mantich, Maddi McGraw, Samantha Smith –contributed to the team’s success as Tulsa Elite ‘95 finishedNo. 1 in the ASA 16U Power Ranking and tied for No. 1 with

Team Mizuno for the Triple Crown National Ranking. The dog pile was backed by an impressive

combination of pitching and power as Tulsa Elitedefeated the Germantown (TN) Red Devils 5-2 and 5-1 toclinch the national championship.

Beason (.467, 27 HR, 127 RBI) and Collins (.429, 11HR, 66 RBI) provided most of the power in the heart of thebatting order.

“They consistently were getting big timely clutch hitsand are arguably the best 3-4 hitting combination in thecountry,” Gho said.Beason is headed to Missouri State University, whileCollins is committed to Oklahoma State University.McElhaney, the team’s leadoff batter and star shortstop, has signed with Kansas and Nease, the catcher, hasaccepted a scholarship to Pittsburg State.

Leach, who batted .335 as the starting third baseman, and Mantich, a center fielder who hit .357, provided thetype of athleticism and versatility that made the Elite sodifficult to defeat.“We wanted to measure our success against ourselvesknowing that we could get better and build upon eachtournament we competed in,” Gho said.

The bats provided a nice foundation, but the dog pilewas built equally on the pitching prowess of Beason,Collins and Battiest, who each had an ERA under 1.60.“We constantly reminded our girls that we can controlcertain things: Our focus, our attitude, our effort, ourIntensity,” Gho said “If we took care of those thingsalong with the small things then everything else wouldfall into place.”

On one of the saddest days of her life, KateyLynch sought out the happiest place she could find:A softball field.

It was the best way the Atlanta Vipers’ catcher couldthink of to pay tribute to her father, Steve. Playing helpedher heal and, more importantly, remember.

So after returning from her dad’s funeral, Lynchsought out the company of her teammates and askedthem to dedicate the rest of the season to “Coach Steve.”

The Vipers all agreed. “On that day the girls developed a bond and decided

that this was going to be a special year dedicated to aspecial man,” coach Vic Loveless said.

The 2012 softball season brought the Vipers togetherin a way they never expected. And they prospered - forKatey and for coach Steve. They won 74 games, mostlyagainst older competition, and finished the summer byrallying out of the losers’ bracket to capture the PremierGirls Fastpitch 14U National Championship.

“Having experienced our lowest of lows, with theloss of Coach Steve, and then experiencing the highestof highs, winning the PGF National Championship, ouryoung ladies are truly champions for life,” coachLoveless said.

The Vipers {74-12) played inspiring softball allsummer. They competed in showcase tournamentsagainst 16- and 18-year-olds; captured the Scenic CityShowcase and then journeyed clear across the country tobecome national champions and secure their place as

the Softball Today Magazine 14U Team of the Year.“Their never-say-never attitude and determination to be

leaders and not followers wouldn’t let them stop beforereaching their goal,” coach Loveless said.

Once they set their minds to it, the Vipers couldn’t bestopped. Even after dropping a one-run game to the OrangeCounty Batbusters, they responded with a six-game winningstreak to capture the Premier National Championship.

The Vipers mourned together and they perseveredtogether. That is what truly made them a great team.

What mattered way more than their 74 victories wasthe way they embraced Katey Lynch and transformed apainful experience into something truly unforgettable. Eachand every Viper made a difference — pitchers JordanWatson, Tessa Daniels and Taylor Decelles, infielderEbonee Echols, infielder Cali Harrod, catcher HannaTrombley, outfielder Brielle Grubbs, shortstop MadisonCouch, third baseman Brianna Vazquez, outfielder BrittanyCrawford and outfielder Danielle Castleberry.

Every game was a unified effort and that wasespecially true at nationals, in Irvine, CA, where the Viperswent 9-1 overall.

Trombley’s second hit of the game brought home theonly run in a 1-0 shutout of the Lil Saints, while DeCellesand Daniels teamed up in the pitcher’s circle to deliver a 5-2 victory over the American Pastime.

Then, Daniels drove in five runs in a 13-3 win over theirrival Georgia Elite.

The loss to the Batbusters (McNee) didn’t deter theVipers one bit. They bounced right back with a 3-0 triumphover the Crown Point Bulldogs.

In a game against Batbusters (Espalin), Harrod collectedtwo hits to spark a 4-3 victory and then the Vipers avengedtheir only loss with a 4-2 win over Batbusters (McNee).

After back-to-back wins over the San Jose Sting —Echols was the star of an 18-2 victory with a four-RBIperformance and DeCellas struck out 10 in a 5-0 victory— the Vipers finally reached the finals.

It was there that they delivered a performance thatcoach Steve truly would have been proud of as Grubbssingled to start a sixth-inning rally and eventually scoredthe championship-clinching run on a Crawford sacrifice flyto secure a 3-2 win over the Southern California Athletics.

“This is a very special group of young ladies thatwere very determined, focused, and inspired,” coachLoveless said. “The battles that we faced both on and offthe field had us prepared for every circumstance that wewould face.”

They had history on their side. Maybe a bit of goodkarma too.

The 12U Power Surge didn’t arrive in Moline, IL as thefavorite to capture an ASA National Championship. And thatwas just fine with them.

The girls from San Diego knew a little more aboutthemselves - and their softball legacy -- than anyone elseand that was enough to transform the underdogs intochampions.

While so many others overlooked them, Power

Surge went undefeated at ASA nationals by digginginto their own past and coming up with a performanceof a lifetime that clinched the organization’s secondASA title in four seasons.

“The team four years ago was the top team going intothat tournament and they went onto win thechampionship,” Power Surge coach Scott Berndes said.“But this current 12U team was not the favorite and had towork for every victory.”

Somehow they managed to play like favorites when itmattered most as Power Surge capped an 83-13 travelseason by becoming the 2012 Softball Today Magazine12U Team of the Year.

The team had great success early in the season as theywon the Triple Crown tournament in Santee, Ca. and theSouthern California State ASA Championships in ChulaVista, Ca. The team went on to play superbly at the TripleCrown Field of Dreams tournament in San Clemente beforeconfidently going on to capture the ASA National title inMoline, Illinois on July 30-Aug 5.

The Southern California champions -- pitcher KonnerDahlberg, pitcher/shortstop Kelsey Munoz, first basemanMorgan Farmer, catcher Summer Hargett, catcher KyleeBrown, catcher/second baseman Eva Gonzales, secondbaseman Alexis Morehouse, third baseman Elise Morris, outfielder Erica Silva, center fielder Hannah McEwen, rightfielder Anna Silva and shortstop Hailey Dademnianiuk --were an intriguing mixture of tenacity and spirit.

That was especially true on defense, where Gonzalesepitomized the team’s summer-long effort by making a

diving catch and then doubling a runner off first base inthe ASA National Championship game.

Moments like that were sprinkled throughout PowerSurge’s final eight-game winning streak against the bestteams in the land.

Silva ran down deep fly balls in the outfield,Dademnianiuk batted over .400 and offensive MVPHargett hit a game-winning three-run homer in the finalsagainst the Texas Bombers.

But it was a two-out, two-run triple by Morris in theteam’s final at-bat of game one that perhaps sparked thechampionship run. Morris, who coach Berndes referredto as “maybe our most valuable player all around” tiedthe game with her clutch hit and then capped a three-runrally by scoring on a wild pitch as the Power Surge pulledout a 6-5 victory over the Chattanooga Warriors.

Power Surge used another three-run, final-inning rallyto beat the Quakes, 6-4, but it was pitching and clutchhitting that propelled them the rest of the way.

Dahberg struck out 10 in a two-hit shutoutperformance against the North Gwinett Blaze and 11 in a6-1 victory over Georgia Impact, while Munoz threw acomplete game to beat Edge Chaos, 4-2.

In the finals, against the formidable Texas Bombers,Dahberg and Munoz teamed up again, this time sealingthe second ASA National Championship for San DiegoPower Surge in four seasons.

“It was a great win, we had to work so hard in everyinning and every game,” coach Berndes said. “I could notbe more proud of this group of girls.”

San Diego 12U Power Surge has Earned two National Championships and two Softball Today Team of the Year honors over the past four years.

By Maria Garcia

The winning attitude was forged over smoothiesand sunscreen. That’s how it worked for the 10U ASANational champions, anyway.

When they weren’t competing for softball trophies, the Firecrackers from Cerritos, CA could almost alwaysbe found hanging out near the Pacific ocean or anearby shopping mall.

Friendships paved the way for triumph. And theFirecrackers had 108 wins to prove it.

“Bonds, like the ones shared by these girls cannotbe easily broken,” manager Roman Gallegos said.“This is why 11 of the 12 girls stayed on this team forthe 2013 season. These girls will continue to getbigger, stronger and improve their skills both on and offthe field.”

In all likelihood, the journey of Softball TodayMagazine’s 10U Team of the Year is just beginning. Andit’s off to a pretty impressive start.

The Firecrackers reached the finals of ninetournaments and won four in a row to finish the travelseason, including a dominating performance at theASA Nationals where they defeated the Gamers 12-0 inmercy-rule fashion to capture the title. “They were not afraid to work harder and longer thaneveryone else,” Gallegos said. “These girls were notonly teammates on the field but sisters off the field.

The coaches (head coach Mark Thornbirg, Richard Riboniand Carlos Villarreal) did an amazing job of keeping thesegirls busy not only with softball but with trips to themovies, the beach, parties and many other things.”

Softball, however, most often occupied their time fromOctober to July. The Firecrackers went 108-12-2 overalland lost just seven times in tournament play behindcontributions from all 12 players -- shortstop HaileeRiboni, catcher Katelyn Mangrello, pitcher/first basemanHannah Kumiyama, second baseman Sam Torre, corneroutfielder Aysha Ramirez, center fielder Myah Iokopo, infielder Mel-Mel Thornburg, pitcher/shortstop JuliaJimenez, pitcher/center fielder Jaelyn Operana, thirdbaseman/ catcher Hailey Gallegos, pitcher/first basemanAlyssa Robles, and second baseman Madi Jacobus.

“We have a team loaded with 12 Kobe’s and Shaq’s,”coach Gallegos said. “Some kids sat on the bench whenthey could have started on most other teams. If youwatched this team play, it was timely hitting and soliddefense from one through nine.”

After opening the season as co-champions of theHalloween Bash for Cash, the Firecrackers captured theTriple Crown Pre-Thanksgiving Bash and went on to reachthe semifinals of every tournament they played.

It was in June, however, that the Firecrackers reallywarmed up. After winning the ASA California StateChampionship, they collected first-place trophies at theFather’s Day Classic and the Triple Crown Red, White and

Blue Tournament before heading off to Bloomington, INfor nationals.

In winning eight consecutive games, the girls took turnssharing the spotlight. Mangrello threw out two baserunners in an early-round win over the Gamers, whileRobles and Jimenez teamed up for a shutout against theTexas Bombers.

In a 13-1 mercy-rule victory over Mizuno, Operanastruck out four in the pitcher’s circle and was 3 for 4 at theplate. And a 9-2 semifinal win over the Thunderboltsfeatured three hits each from Gallegos and Kumiyama.

The championship game served as a true showcase ofthe Firecrackers’ talent as Operana pitched a four-hitshutout in a 12-0 victory.

“We carried five pitchers but did not have an ace,”coach Gallegos said. “We threw Jaelyn in thechampionship game because she had beat the Gamers allseason long, so when we faced the Gamers in thechampionship, it was only natural to use her.”

The potent batting order backed Operana’s pitchingeffort as Mangrello went 3 for 3 and Riboni 2 for 3 --combining for 5 RBI. Kumiyama drove in three runs.“This was a very resilient group of 10 year olds,” coachGallegos said. “The coaches and the girls were criticizedby most all season long. Any time we’d lose a tournamentour names got dragged in the mud. The greatest asset tothese girls was resiliency.

“They didn’t know or understand the word quit.”

The 10U Firecrackers from Cerritos, CA. earned a 108 wins and a ASA National Championship.

By Lance McCall

The look is awe-inspiring enough. DeMarini puts a lot of creative energy intographic design. But the 2013 line of Slow pitch bats continues to be among softball’smost popular because they possess everything a Slow pitch softball player desiresin a bat.

Quicker break-in times, better performance and lasting durability are alltrademarks of a DeMarini bat and there are plenty of options to choose from, including the already well-known Stadium One and Juggernaut models as well asSenior One, Flipper, NTU Juggy, NT3 Juggy, FU Dawg and the Mercy.

“The upcoming season looks great for DeMarini slowpitch and we are hard atwork laying the foundation for a very successful year,” said National SlowpitchMarketing Manager Jerry Garnett.

The Flipper, for example, is specifically designed to attack low compression52/300 softballs, while the NTU “Juggy” utilizes a stacked barrel construction andthe mid-loaded triplewall barrel to provide a strong, lightweight hitting zone with aspringboard surface.

“The Divergence technology in our new Flipper model is turning a lot of heads atthe ballpark as it is truly adding a much needed level of performance and excitementfor players that are using the 52/300 ball,” Garnett said.

Stadium One bats still rule in USSSA, while the Juggy 3 is making a quickimpression in the ASA arena.

The Stadium bat has always been built for power at the highest level. The new S-ONE composite barrel combined with the SC4 Alloy handle provides even more pop.

Juggy bats come in two versions - the NTU for USSSA and NT3 for ASA - thatfeatures a mid-loaded, stacked barrel construction that will spray line drive toall fields.

With the Flipper, DeMarini has introduced a way to punish soft compression ballsand it could be a game-changer. Created with a new “Divergence Technology” thatextends the sweet spot horizontally around the barrel, the ball flips off the barrel and

Flipper Model Number: FLS-13

out of the park. The beauty of the Fu Dawg (ASA only) is that it joins DeMarini’s stiffest handle with

its strongest to create ultimate power.A 4.ONE Composite barrel is topped off with a dish endcap to create maximum

stiffness while driving energy back to the sweet spot. A super stiff SC4 handle madewith the company’s toughest alloy provides end-loaded punishment for pitch in thestrike zone.

In the Senior circuit, the ONE SR 1 had dominated for years and 2013 should be nodifferent. Its trademark is a stiff, durable barrel which is endloaded for maximum powerand balance.

Even old reliable bats, such as the SF5, have garnered new attention with updateddesigns. The SF5 has prevailed for decades in USSSA, but it’s being re-discoveredthanks to new X-10 Alloy that fine-tune the thickness of the Doublewall barrel to stretchthe sweetspot even wider than before.

The one-piece Rayzr is built with the same principle in mind. All four circuits -- ASA, USSSA, ISA and NSA -- will benefit from Steel and Raw, the

newest “weapons of smash destruction.” DeMarini’s new Steel 01 Singlewall barrel nowcombines optimum strength to combat softer balls in the summer heat.

“By fine-tuning the thickness of the barrel walls, we dramatically increase the bats’durability while giving it the perfect responsiveness,” Garnett said.

The women’s ASA and ISA circuits have a new weapon as well. Mercy isspecifically designed for slowpitch, balancing to perfection a 13” TR3 F.L.O.composite barrel and handle.

“The overall response to the 2013 bats has been great. Players are using our newmodels and sharing their experience with other players via message boards, socialmedia and grassroots word-of-mouth. The good news is spreading fast,” Garnett said.“Our 2013 slowpitch bat line-up is a show stopper. We now have a high performancebat for everyone. We are hearing from players in parts of the country that we haven’treally serviced in years and the feedback is all good.”

Outfielder Johnny McCraw is convinced that he’s never held a better bat in hishands. The 2013 Derby Boy slow pitch model by Combat Sports is just that good.

“It’s my favorite bat of all time,” said McCraw, who knows a little something abouthitting. A former baseball star who spent some time in the Houston Astrosorganization, he’s won a pair of ASA Major World Series championships and played forTeam USA during a career that has spanned nearly two decades.

Two-time All-American and fellow outfielder Rick Baker is partial to Combat’s newWanted line and catcher Scott Brown can’t seem to make up his mind as theproduction from both bats has been off the charts.

“I will say this, they are both better than anything we have ever had and I loved theCombatant,” said Brown, a former Marine who has also played on the national team.“The new stuff is so good out of the wrapper and the durability really seems to bethere.”

Therein lies the formula for success that Combat Sports Senior Vice President DonCooper believes makes this year’s bats among the best in the business.

“Many manufacturers talk about having the tightest gaps or overlap. We havenone,” Cooper said. “Our bats have one continuous strand of fibers making for themost trampoline effect possible. This is also why we are good to go out of thewrapper.”

Each one of Combats’ 2013 bats (Wanted, Derby Boys and Derby Girls for slowpitch or Pure and Morphed Reload for fast pitch) are 100 percent composite with arevolutionary seamless technology that creates a larger sweet spot.

Wanted WANSP1

Wanted 275 WANSP2

Wanted ASA WANSP3

Derby Boys DB427SP1

“Seamless technology means all the fibers in the bat run completely from top tobottom,” Cooper said. “Our process allows us not to cut the fibers and we are the onlycomposite manufacturer who can say that.”

Wanted bats are a two-piece design, while the Derby models are one-piece but thesignificance of either model is that it is designed for players of every skill level.

“The Wanted has the stiffest handle we have ever built,” Cooper said. “It really isa two-piece bat with a one piece feel. The Wanted line feels like a good tennis racket, while the Derby Line has a completely different feel from any one piece Combat batof the past. I promise you it will be great.”

Some of the nation’s best players agree with that.McCraw is a big fan of the one-piece feel and Baker raves about Wanted’s ASA only

model, which was designed with slow pitch’s softer softballs in mind.“The ASA only bats are completely different than any bat we have built before,”

Cooper said. “They are geared for the softer ball with maximum performance. But theywill perform extremely well with the old balls as well.”

And one swing is all it takes. The beautiful thing about Combat Sports bats is that, after two years in development, there is no need to break them in. They are gameready.

“The 2013 slow-pitch line has been a work in progress for two years. We got thenew standards two years ago and went to work,” Cooper said. “.We were very happywith the Avarice line and thought it was a very good start at the new standards, butwe knew we could improve them.

“We have been really focused on durability and sweet spot,” he said. “The Wantedline and Derby line is a huge step forward in both of those areas.”
