SETAC 17th Annual Meeting '96 Conference Announcements Society of Environmental Toxicologyand Chemistry (SETAC) 17th Annual Meeting, 17-21 November 1996, Washington Hilton and Towers, Washington, DC, USA Partnerships for the Environment: Science, Education, and Policy The theme for this meeting is Partnerships for the Environment: Science, Education, and Policy. The theme reflects the increasing need for partnerships among scientists, educators, and policy-makers from industry, govern- ment, the public-interest sector, and acade- mia. It also is designed to encourage partner- ships among technical sectors including chemists, toxicologists, ecologists, physiolo- gists, modelers, and others. Such partnerships can and should facilitate the conduct and funding of research and education in the en- vironmental sciences, and can also improve the quality of research and education. SETAC's mission is to enhance sectoral part- ner-ships and the 17th Annual Meeting is de- signed to advance this component of SETAC's mission. To this end, technical sessions will address Environmental Chemistry and Geo- chemistry, Environmental Fate and Trans- port, Environmental Toxicology (with an em- phasis on mechanistic research), Ecological Risk Assessment, Environmental Policy, and Education in the Environmental Sciences. As always, the 17th Annual Meeting will bal- ance a strong technical program with promi- nent plenary speakers and a superb social program. Washington, DC, provides a re- markable opportunity to experience all the fascinating amenities offered by the political and social capital of the U.S. At least two sci- ence-related tours are planned, one to the Na- tional Wildlife Visitors Center at the Patuxent Environmental Science Center and another to the Museum of Natural History. The site will also stimulate opportunities to move beyond the rhetoric of improving policy through good science to the creation of unique part- nerships between scientists and regulators. We anticipate approximately 1,500 abstracts from a wide variety of subject areas for plat- form and poster session formats. Special sym- posia and plenary programs will address the meeting's theme. A variety of education op- portunities will be provided through SETAC's consistently excellent short courses, and the latest publications, equipment, and software will be displayed in the Exhibits Area.
