Success Stories :

1. Back to School:

This little girl, Preeti, wanted to study. But

her father made her work in the farm, clearing

manure and feeding the cattle. At just 12, she

wanted a better future for herself. There were

many fights at home, and unable to bear it,

she ran away. She knew that the railway sta-

tion was a safe place. So she went there and

sat for a while. “What am I going to do?” she

thought. Just then she felt an arm on her

shoulder. The railway police lady looked at

her kindly and said,” Hey little girl, what are

you doing here? ” Sobbing, she told her

story. The police lady brought a social worker

to talk to her. “Let me take you home. I will

talk to your father and see that he sends you

to school,”

This made Preeti happy. She returned home

with the social worker of SCOPE INDIA,

who encouraged her father to send her to

school. “If I send her to school, who will

work on the land with me?” said her father.

“How will she be safe going to school up and

down every day?” The social worker per-

suaded her father to send her to a hostel

where she would be safe. Preeti is doing well

in her studies, thanked SCOPE India.

2. The Run Away Child :

Villupuram Railway station is a favourite

place for runaway boys from the south of

India. The railway police have been

trained to spot them and buy them some-

thing to eat and drink. There is a clean

bathroom where they can wash and

change. Their favourite place also means

that they quickly get picked up, counseled

and taken back home. One such runaway

was Parthiban.

Partiban felt that he was discriminated by

his teacher and lost interest in his studies.

Thus he failed one set of exams. Difficul-

ties at home, because of his moodiness and

the inability of parents to reach out to him

made him runaway thinking that this was

the remedy. When approached by the so-

cial worker, he said that he would like to

study, but not at the same school. So the

social worker approached a kind-hearted

principal and changed schools. Parthiban

did much better at this school with just a

little encouragement from both the teach-

ers and his social worker. He has passed

all his exams and is now waiting to do a

diploma course in engineering.
