What it is …so·cial me·di·a

noun

websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.so·cial net·work·ing

noun

the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself.

What it is NOT1. A magic bullet. There is no such thing.

2. Free! - NOTHING is free. Whatever you save in money you tend to pay for in time; time learning, time researching, time posting, etc.

3. It is not going to replace ALL of your marketing. It should be used to supplement.

4. It is not going to start making you money overnight. It could, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

5. It is not one-size-firs-all. This is a very few of infinite ways to use it.

What network(s) should I use? There are only 207 of them

How would I use #Twitter

There are many ways you can use Twitter. Some see Twitter as the best way keep current with the news in an unfiltered way. Others see Twitter as a way to converse with people in a very public but real-time setting. One thing, however, tends to be involved in ANY way you use Twitter and that is the mysterious and ever-allusive #hashtag.

This gets its own slide?!hash·tag

ˈhaSHtaɡ/

noun

noun: hashtag; plural noun: hashtags

(on social media sites such as Twitter) a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic.

"spammers often broadcast tweets with popular hashtags even if the tweet has nothing to do with them"

the hash or pound sign (#).info from: definition for ‘hashtag’ provided by Google

How would I use #Twitter cont.

Now that you know the basics I am sure you can think of plenty of ways to use Twitter. Here are some of the ways I currently use it:

• Share links to articles/blog post/etc.

• Post new listings

• Share links to my other social network profiles

• News about a certain topic to tag people in my sphere

• See what kind of engagement other realtors and brokers are getting

• Look for opportunities to refer people in my sphere

• Look to see where I can add value to a live hashtag meeting

• Connected to my Instagram account since they both use hashtags the same way

How would I use InstagramInstagram is another system that heavily relies on the #hashtag (see slide 13). This network, however, is limited to posting images and short videos. This is the perfect platform to share your behind the scenes shots (closings, congratulations, selfies at work, etc.) or other images. Some of the things I post and do now are:• Images for DIY and craft

ideas

• Images with links in the description

• Images from around town to tag people in

• Invites to connect on my other social media profiles.

• Copy/paste-worthy pins from Pinterest

• Fashion-oriented images (selfies or from online)

PinterestRelate

Why?/Statistics• 72.8M users (85% of users are women)• 47.1 M Pins a day• A pin’s “half-life” is 3.5 months

• a Tweet’s half-life is 2.8 hours• a post on Facebook is 3.2 hours

• Most pinned categories are:• food + drink• DIY + CRAFTS

• HOME DECOR

• holidays + events

Pinterest is all about interests (pun very much intended). There are many ways to use Pinterest. I personally use it to let people know things that I like and in turn what I am like. I created boards for almost every category I would be looking for. Here is a snapshot of a few of them:

LinkedinConnect

• 364M members in over 200 countries and territories.

• There are over 39 million students and recent college graduates on LinkedIn. • They are LinkedIn's fastest-growing demographic.

How do I use LinkedInLinkedin is a business oriented network. People are normally not interested in funny pictures or motivational pictures unless you are in a group and the post has something to do with it. I use it mainly to keep it updated in case the first place someone finds me. There are many who use it to keep in touch with their sphere or ex-co-workers. However you use it you should keep your posts short, relevant and to the point.

What Should I Post?

The Online 80/20 Rule

I know, another 80/20 rule. This one is easy though.

- When posting online you should post 80% THEM (educate, entertain, assist, relate) and 20% YOU (publicize, promote,

exposure, your “behind he scenes”)

Places to get contentThere are literally thousands of places to get content. No matter what you’re looking for there is a website, blog or newsletter about it.
