Poster describing the results of a study examining Twitter use among a sample of 8,826 academics from 5 UK and US universities.

Priem, Jason; Costello, Kaitlin; Dzuba,

Tyler (2012): Prevalence and use of

Twitter among scholars. http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.104629 Uploaded 16 Dec 2012 See also http://jasonpriem.org/self-archived/twitter-scholars-poster-abstract.pdf

1. Twitter growth among scholars is steady, and

data suggest we may anticipate future

growth in the number and percentage of

scholars on Twitter.

2. Twitter is a scholarly communication medium.

Scholars discuss, converse, and share links to

peer-reviewed articles as well as grey

literature and announcements. Our relatively

unbiased sample allows us to make this claim

with a high degree of confidence, compared

to earlier studies.

3. We found no evidence that rank or discipline

disproportionally affected scholars’ use of

Twitter or presence on Twitter.
