Are we the only planet?

To answer this we must become EXPLORERS!

While exploring, you will find out: How many planets in our solarsystem, what are the inner andouter planets, and much more!

ESD

We will explore the planets in our Houghton Mifflin Calfornia Science students books.We will check out books on planets in our school's library.We will also explore the planets by way of the "super highway" known as the internet.

The Milky Way Galaxy

• We, on planet Earth, are located in the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Earth

• We will learn about the importance of our planet Earth.

ESD

Commonly referred to as the "3rd planet from the sun" the Earth is actually the 3rd planet in line from the sun outward. The Earth is the only planet that we know that currently supports life forms - human beings.

Nine planets

• We will learn about the planets that make up our Milky Way Galaxy.

ESD

Our galaxy consists of nine planets and their order from the sun are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The Inner Planets

• We will also learn more specifically why the closest planets to the sun are classified as the inner planets.

ESD

They are warmer and rocky, because of their distance (closeness) to the sun.The order of the inner planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars - notice that Earth is the 3rd planet.

The Outer Planets

• We will also learn about the planets that are farthest away from the sun, which are classified as the outer planets.

ESD

They are colder and usually made up of gases, because of their distance (farther) from the sun.The order of the outer planets are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.Pluto is now re-classified as a "dwarf" planet.

Space Travel

•We will discover that space exploration is important!

•We will learn that astronauts go to school for many years.

Because it is we will learn about the important heroes that we call Astronauts.

And they train at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Wrap it Up!

• We will be able to answer the question “Are we the only planet?”

• What? Why? You will be able to give specifics about our Solar Systems and answer the important questions that anyone has about our galaxy
