What is an Honors Fellow? (The Basics)

• An upper division Honors student, leader, peer mentor, role model

• Someone who chooses to live with Honors students (MF-freshmen)

• Someone who follows directions and manages time well

• Someone who has a strong commitment to the Honors Program

– By being a strong student (3.0 GPA minimum)

– By knowing the ins and outs of the Honors Program

– By believing in the benefits of an Honors education

What is an Honors Fellow? (The Personality)

• Someone who is energetic, outgoing and fun

• Someone who is dedicated, available, and resourceful

• Someone who is collaborative, adaptable and intuitive

• Someone who can inspire, involve, and include others

– By building community from day one to day 271

– By planning events that students want to come to

– By being available and knowing students in the neighborhood

• Dr. Burnaby Munson

– An influential chemistry professor at UD

– Best known for his work as a mass spectrometrist (Chemical

Pioneer of the year, 2008, American Institute of Chemists)

– Some might say he’s the founder of the Honors Program

(just not him)

– Director of the Honors Program multiple times

– Initiated “Study Breaks” back when Honors was in Dickinson Hall

and continues them today.

But, what is a “Munson” Fellow?

What does a Munson Fellow do? (Being a Peer Mentor)

• You have to adequately prepare to be a peer mentor

– Attend August training (five days prior to start of classes)

– Attend all Fellows meetings and regular 1-on-1s with CCC

• You have to build a good foundation in your neighborhood

– Know your mentees names and meet with them regularly

– Serve as a role model for balance of work and play

– Regularly attend floor meetings to know what’s going on

What does a Munson Fellow do? (You need to know your mentees to help them)

• You have to engage your community!

– Creating and acting in the Freshman Welcome Skit

– Plan neighborhood-wide programs and community-wide events

– Plan the Fall Freshman Coffeehouse

– Help with Dr. Munson’s Study Breaks

– Co-plan a Faculty Chat to connect students to faculty

What does a Munson Fellow do? (The many hats you will wear)

– Be a support: academic and personal check-ins with students

– Be a representative of UDHP and be involved yourself

• What are the requirements for GPA? GHA? HD? HDwD?

• How can I be involved with UDHP? Mosaic? HPB? FF?

– Be a resource and work with Res Life

• What are the support services on campus? When to refer?

– Be strong administratively: communication and paperwork

– Be a STUDENT TOO!

You want to add something more? (Additional Responsibilities)

• Some Munson Fellows live in a single. (in the wings)

– They have 2x the mentees, and no one to help with programs

• Some Munson Fellows share a double. (bottom of the U)

– They have half the mentees, and collaborate on programs

– These Fellows might get a “collateral assignment”

• Freshman Fellow Recruitment, Training, Support

• Work with HENS, HPB, Honors Mosaic, etc.

So, what does a Senior Fellow do? (Munson Fellows have a really full plate.)

• Good news: there is more room for other activities!

– Flexible, Volunteer Position

– Arrive to campus just one day early

• Learn all about Honors requirements & opportunities

– Attend meetings regularly to stay informed

• Promote & encourage community in Honors

– Plan community-wide events

– Plan the Honors Halloween Dance

– Recruit freshmen to live in Honors housing as upperclassmen

– Advertise events designed for Honors upperclassmen

• MF: Modest stipend

• Early Fall Semester Check-In (for training)

• Designated housing

– MF: LRH, single room subject to availability

– SF: live with friends in Harter/Sharp

• Peer-mentor training, Leadership experience

• Event planning experience

• Closer to Honors staff, aware of opportunities

• An awesome free t-shirt, designed by you!

Where do I sign up?

• Applying is a multi-step process

– February 16 (applications due by midnight)

– February 19 (invitation to interview, by email)

– February 23 (interviews begin)

– February 28 (the Housing deadline – you must apply)

– March 1 (possible group process for MFs)

– March 13 (selected offers sent out, by email)

– March 27 (acceptance due, by email)

– May (orientations for new SFs and new MFs)
