NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Welcome to So Money! It’s been such a privilege to produce and host my new daily podcast for you. In just a short while I’ve had the opportunity to interview some fascinating entrepreneurs, authors, financial experts and influencers who’ve all generously shared their personal money stories, philosophies and lessons.

One of my favorite questions for guests is – What is one financial habit that helps you keep your money safe and protected? Habits, as we know, are powerful and can make all the difference in our lives, especially when it comes to taking our finances from good to great. For me, one of my top habits is asking a lot of questions – and never hesitating to ask what might be perceived as a “silly” or “dumb” question. There is no such thing. Whether it’s about fees, how a product works or whether I can get a discount…as a journalist, asking questions comes easy…and it’s the simple secret that prevents me from making bad or expensive decisions. It’s similar to what my first guest, Tony Robbins, believes. “The best people on Earth, they all say, ‘What don’t I know,” he tells me. And I couldn’t agree more. In addition to Tony’s brilliant thoughts, in the following pages you’ll find a collection of some the best interview excerpts related to financial habits. The insights and advice my guests shared are quite profound - and personal at times. I’m so excited to share this gift with you. And I hope you’ll continue to join me on So Money. We’ve got an incredible line up of guests and tons more to share and learn…all in the pursuit of a richer, happier life. Enjoy! Warmly, Farnoosh

TONY ROBBINS

Bestselling Author, MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom

Stay Curious and Reach High… “For me personally, it's really looking for, and never believing, you have all the answers. One of the reasons I wrote this book is I spent 21 years coaching one of the most brilliant guys in the world who never loses money. But I learned so much. I figured out how little I knew. The best people on Earth, they all say, "What don't I know?" 'cause the world's always changing.” - Click to tweet

If you want to do better financially, a universal principle is change who you spend time with 'cause who you spend time with is who you become. If you go play a sport, let's say tennis… and you play against somebody who is 10 times your ability, you are going to increase your skill just to stay on the court with them. But if you play against people you're better than, it's only a matter of time before your game goes down. So, in my life, I've always tried to reach the people that were playing the game much higher and knew the game ahead of me, like they knew the road ahead 'cause I know that anticipation is power.”

Invest in Experiences…

“Buying stuff doesn't make you happy, what really makes you happy is doing something you love”  –  Click  to  tweet. “My wife and I…we get our joy out of life from hanging out with our friends and our family. We just try and live our lives moderately, maintain a low cost of living and just enjoy the moments in life, not necessarily the things. People have this misunderstanding that they'll

be happier if they have a bigger house or a nicer car. It doesn't do anything. You return right to your happiness baseline after a couple of weeks. Everyone has a different happiness baseline. It's governed in part by your genetics…10% of it is governed by your financial circumstances, but 40% of it is governed by your activities, the activities you engage in. So, you'll only be 10% happier buying stuff. You'll revert back to your baseline, but what will continue to make you happy is doing certain things... whether you're pursuing some goals, a life dream or your major purpose in life.”

Stick to Cash…

“I negotiate everything. –Click to tweet. In terms of business and life, I grew up and went through college just like all of my friends, thinking credit cards were the greatest thing that ever happened to me, and shopping and getting myself into a lot of credit card debt. And so, that hole that I had to dig myself out of and currently still digging myself out of, I didn't want to spill over into my business. Chic CEO has zero debt. We don't have credit cards. We don't have lines of credit. We don't have investors. So, when we make a purchase, it is because we brought in the revenue to do so. I think in the beginning, and this isn't true for all businesses, but we worked really hard to make sure that, we're not spending money needlessly. And so, I'm very frugal with every dollar we have, every dollar we spend. I negotiate everything. I barter. I do everything that I can, to make sure that expenses stay low, because … the credit card debt I put myself in college by shopping, scared me enough to make sure that I wanted my company to be healthy financially.”

Never Pay Retail…

“I always look for a deal. I remember when my sister and I were kids. If we went shopping with my mom, she would basically say, ‘You can get a shirt or get a pair of pants as long as you find one that's less than $5.’ So I learned to sale and deal shop. I don't know if $5 was the number that it always was. But it was a low, low number and the whole idea behind it was to only buy if it was a deal. Especially nowadays, I think it's even more pertinent. You can find a deal no matter what, as long as you're not totally caught up on one item.

And that's another thing. Don’t get caught up. Don't fall in love with one particular item in a store. I've never in my entire life. I'm serious about this. I have never fallen in love with one thing – Click to tweet and I think a lot of that comes back to my mom's teaching that unless it's a deal, I don't really want to buy it. And I really, I, genuinely, in my lifetime, have not, as far as I can recall, have not bought anything that wasn't on sale. Unless it was at the grocery store, which, sometimes the milk isn't on sale and you need milk, so you buy it!”

Stay In-The-Know…and Buy in Bulk!

“Two things: one on the investment side and one on the spending side. On the investment side, I’ve been obsessive lately about reading local real estate listings. The best advantage you can have in a real estate investment is knowing something that not everybody knows. So, I feel like if you can have a geographic area ideally near you where you’re travelling every day and you can just take notes about that and see an opportunity where somebody else might not see this quickly as you, you may be able to get into something earlier than everybody else and, you know, that ultimately may be worth 10 or 20 or 30% in an investment… The other thing, on the spending side, is I love my monthly trip to Costco – Click to tweet. Because, we were in a neighborhood where there’re a lot of midsized supermarkets within walking distance. They charge you a fortune for staples. The paper towel and toilet paper and Ziploc bags are twice, three times as expensive as they are at Costco. So, you know, I like to drive the car to Costco, load up on that stuff, throw it in the basement which I have now that I moved from my Manhattan apartment to a house in Brooklyn.”

Observe Your Patterns…

“I think one of the biggest tips is just to set up your own weekly money date and start to get in the know with your patterns and your spending because it's the only way you're going to begin to change – Click to tweet or build more money or build the business to support the money you need moving forward. Another thing that I do, I actually like to review my net worth every month… And I think this is helpful because a lot of times in our financial lives, we feel like we're not where we should be, or we're not making any progress, or we're not acknowledging the progress we're making, and by checking in on your own net worth, which is just your assets minus your liabilities or what you own minus what

you owe, you're able just to check in and say, "Okay. Am I moving in the right direction?” And when you can check in on that, I think it's just that little report card for you personally and it helps you feel good about what you're doing.”

Be Wise, Thoughtful, Generous…

“Invest wisely, spend thoughtfully, and give generously. Invest wisely is around thinking about your investment decisions, and not just, what asset class and what you're investing in. But who are you supporting? Who are you handing your money over? Increasingly, I'm thinking a lot about, or trying to do a lot more in the impact investing space. Spend thoughtfully, do I really need that? I really ask myself that question… And align it with the budget. And of course, give generously. That's why I'm spending a lot of my time now, and I continuously challenge myself to think about at any point in time, how generous can I be, not only with my money, but with my time. And I would just say, with investing wisely, it doesn't just have to be an asset class or a portfolio, or a stock. It can be in yourself and others, in an idea that you have. I think, especially now, it's really important to make that commitment to yourself in an economy that is changing so quickly – Click to tweet. And we need to be able to be changing as it evolves. And so, I'm a proponent of that.”

Know Your Nervous System’s Response…

“It comes down to awareness, and it's exactly the same for food and money. And hence, there is a whole universe of things that happen in your body that are not visible to your conscious brain… You can almost think of your nervous system as a separate part of you. And it just ties directly to the financial decisions you make. – Click to tweet. So when I look at managing my money, the first thing I do is I look at what is my nervous system's response to a financial situation. Is there a fear or a tension or something? And if there is, I pay a lot of attention to it until that goes away, because I don't want to be dealing with money on that level.

I will honor my nervous system if I have a deal in front of me, and if some part of me is like, "Run screaming, this is a bad deal." okay, I'll go with my gut. And all the great venture capitalists, when you talk to them about this, they'll say the same thing. Some part of what they do is intuition. So I trust my intuition, but I listen to my nervous system, and I don't let it make decisions for me. I make them consciously.”

DAVID BACH

EVP Edelman Financial Services, Founder of Finish Rich Media

Be a Go Giver…

Over 20 years ago David heard John Templeton, who was a self-made billionaire and one of the great investors of our lifetime, say that “people in life are taught to be go-getters and I really believe people in life should be go-givers. So don't be a go-getter, be a go-giver.” – Click to tweet. “That had a huge impact on me. And right around the time I heard Zig Ziglar say "If you just help enough people get what they want you'll always have what you want" – Click to tweet, which comes from kind of the same exact place which is just be of service. So the bulk of my life has been focused on, "How can I be of the most service?" With the belief that if I'm of the most service good things will come back to me. That life is a giant circle of karma and that the more you give out the more it comes back. And that's really been true in my life. So I have really no regrets for living my life that way and I constantly try to remind myself, even when I'm overworked or over stressed or things aren't going the way I want, that I signed up for this attitude that I was going to live my life in service.”

Be Thankful…

“Gratitude is part of my spiritual practice. Gratitude is part of my bottom line. It is part of my management practice, it's everywhere. When I have a dip or a down day, I have to look at the big scope things and say, all of my problems are first world problems. I've just come from having a beautiful facial and a beautiful spa and I have to deal with a challenging business vendor. Who cares, my life is good. I've got so much to be grateful for. And then there's reframing the problems into things to be grateful for, seeing the gift in it… It's also part of how I manifest. So I'm grateful for what's here, I declare the gratitude for what I have manifested, for what I have done, I take full responsibility for my own creativity,

my smarts, my love, my capabilities. – Click to tweet. I also bow in gratitude to universal intelligence and my version of God, and love and the cosmos. This is a dynamic relationship; I'm not doing this alone. And, I also thank life, the cosmos for already bringing me what I want. So I speak in future tense. Thank you for bringing me prosperity. Thank you for protecting my body, my mind, my thoughts, my ideas, my possessions, and the people in my life. Thank you for what's already on it's way to me.”

Pay It Off Sooner…

“Many years ago when I was at Money Magazine, I wrote a book called "The 10 Commandment s of Financial Happiness," and it was based on a piece of research that I did with the folks at Money, a big study of 5,000 Americans that Roper did the research for us. We…figured out that it wasn't so much the amount of money that you had that made people happy. At that point, the bar in the sand across the country for financial happiness was about $65,000. Now, a couple of years ago, Daniel Kahneman put it at $75,000. I feel gratified to even be in the same ballpark with him. But we did note that people who had more control over whatever money they had were significantly happier – Click  to  tweet. And one of the things that made people happy, or one of the habits that happier people had was that they paid their bills when they came in– Click  to  tweet. And I started doing that when I got the finding, and I continue to do it to this day. It's one of the things that has been made much, much easier by online banking. I get a bill, I still get my bills in the mail. I open it, I sign on, I pay it, 30 seconds, and it's done.”

Give Yourself 30 Days…

“One of the habits that I developed when I was getting out of debt is if I wanted something, if I was at a store and I was like ‘Oh my gosh, look at this new CD’, for example, ‘or DVD. I really want that…’ what I would do is I would write it down on a piece of paper. I always carried a pen and paper with me because I’m a writer and nowadays you can use your smart phone. I would write it down and…when I get home I would add it to a list. I would list the item, where I saw it, how much it cost and what the date was that I saw it. And…my objective was I gave myself permission if I still wanted it 30 days later, I

could go back to the list and say ‘Okay, yeah, I really do want this.’ And then, it was okay to buy it. But, what I found was I almost never wanted to buy these things 30 days later – Click  to  tweet. It’s just in the moment when you’re in the store we have this impulse to buy.”

Respect Thy Cash…

“I stand by this, I know it makes a difference for me, when I pay for something in cash, I take a moment at the cash register, I usually step to the side so the next person can go, and I make sure that I put that money back in my wallet in numerical order with the presidents faces all facing me and no wrinkled corners, no stuffing wads of money in my purse, or in my wallet, or in my pocket, because to me, that's an affirmation every single time that I have the time and the luxury 'cause I think that our relationship with time can be very similar to our relationship with money – Click  to  tweet. So, taking that breath, taking that abundant moment to care for my money, and it's an affirmation to me that I am spending that time paying attention to my money and caring for it beautifully and making sure it's in a safe place, all organized, and that it has a safe container. And that, for me, that gives me a sense of abundance and it gives me a sense of “I am caring for my money.”

Focus on Your Health…

“I find that money is just a bi-product of living a healthy life – Click  to  tweet. If you're physically, emotionally, mentally, and let's call it spiritually healthy, money is a bi-product of that. People say, "Oh, you can only say that after you have money." I can tell you for sure I had no money, and then I started focusing everyday on just 1% improving my life physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, and then money appeared. And again, it's not always doing what I love. For instance, I'm a board member on several companies of things that I'm not really that interested in, but I make money from them.

And again, these opportunities happen because I stay healthy, and I constantly am coming up with ideas. I'm constantly grateful for what I'm already abundant in. And then it's just natural that more opportunities come my way. It's almost like having faith in something. I trust that if I build this foundation, the house will be solid. And that has always been true for me. I never think about the money first. I never think, "How can I make more money?" I always think about, "How can I be healthier in these four areas?" And… I share my health with others, and that boomerangs back to me in the form of money often.”

LEANNE JACOBS

Money and Lifestyle Strategist

Keep a Long Term View…

“[My habits] are extremely simple but I always find simple is always best… As women, we have tendencies to have a little bit of a default where we might shop or we might, you know, we might overdo it. So, one of the things that I ask myself is just ‘do I love it’ or ‘do I like it’ and if it’s something that I don’t deeply love emotionally I don’t engage in it or I don’t buy it… And, just that very simple sentence has really guided me… I’d much rather buy an international property than spend my money on junk... We like space around us because if you don’t have space, you can’t create more. A lot of time people will look at their surrounding and they’re dense. They’re dense from a physical perspective but also emotionally they’re overwhelmed. So, to create their next level of abundance is going to be challenging because there’s no room. There’s no space. So, that’s my first little tip. Secondly, I’m always thinking a couple of years down the road when it comes to money decisions – Click  to  tweet. And, I find just that discipline in itself really helps, because before I engage in a purchase, I’m always thinking, “Well, where do I want to be in 2, 3, 5 years?” Is this decision going to move me closer to that destination or further away.”

Systemize and Visualize…

“First, it's setting up a system, and then, not even thinking about it – Click  to  tweet. So all my bills are paid automatically, all my savings go into different accounts every month automatically, for how much I want to put in that year. So everything is automatic, so I don't even think about it. So I'm putting all the fears aside by setting things up automatically, and setting myself up to win. Secondly, I'm a big visualizer. I've been doing this since playing sports all through high school and college and pro. I visualize exactly what I want for my life, for the season, to achieve that year, whatever it may be. I write my goals up. I frame them. I put a date of when they're going to be achieved

by, and then I sign it before this is all done. And, I put it up on the wall, as if it's a certificate of achievement that's already happened. And I look at it over and over and I visualize, and I do the work to make it happen, I'm constantly watching game film, I'm constantly practicing and honing on my skills. I'm reverse engineering how to make it happen, I'm doing whatever it takes to make it happen…”

Author of Rich Dad Poor Dad

Never Stop Learning…

“I have the Rich Dad Company. And, once a month or we have meetings every week but once a month I hand out a financial article on the economy and the entire company discusses it, studies it and, you know, it costs me a lot of money. It’s 2 hours out of a day. That’s a lot of people, a lot of time, a lot of money but by studying with my company and my friends, we stay abreast. For example, a while ago we studied the Swiss Franc. Oh, and before that – Keynesian economics and just recently we studied the collapse of the Zimbabwe dollar and The Economist article. So, even though most of my employees really have had no financial education, what we do is we study as a group on a regular basis and we discuss. There are no right or wrong answers, everybody’s allowed their point of view but we constantly study because everything is changing so fast right now – Click  to  tweet that you’re either getting ahead or you’re falling behind. There is no neutral anymore. We’re in the 21st century but most people are still doing business in the 20th century.”

Ask Yourself: “Why”…

“I love being very introspective about my motivations and my emotions. And part of this comes from my background. I studied Family Science in school, and my wife is a family therapist. And so I really love psychology. And so if I ever feel like, "I want to make a purchase." I ask myself, "Why do I want to make that purchase? And what are the emotions attached to that? – Click  to  tweet " So psychologically, every time I'm ready to make a purchase or I'm going to put something on my card, I pause for a second and I ask myself, "Well, why do I want to make that purchase?" And it's not a good or bad thing, right? It's just

being more aware of our behavior. And so, not everyone realizes this, but I lost a lot of weight myself. I lost 60 pounds at one time and did that in the course of one year. And my secret was that, I just wrote down everything that I ate and I just logged it in an app, and that's all I did. I don't feel like I really did much else different. All I did was just log my behavior. And so, with shopping, I like to make as many of my shopping decisions at home rather than in the store.”
