So Much To Do And No Time To Deal With Money!


When it comes to getting finances in order one of the most common complaints I hear is,...

“I just don’t have the time to deal with it, so I’ll just put it on the back burner for now.” People wait for the perfect day when they will have free time on their calendar and extra internal motivation to sit down and really get a clear sense of their financial situation.



Some of the money challenges that people feel burdened by are things like…

Not knowing how much they spend each month Wanting to create a clear financial plan and to

reach a place of agreement on their financial priorities with their spouse

Knowing they need to create a budget to prevent overspending, but at the same time they’re afraid of feeling restricted and constrained by a budget – so they never get around to creating it

Not knowing how much debt they have, the exact interest rates, and how to get it paid off – they feel like they’ll never be able to get rid of their debt



Some of the money challenges that people feel burdened by are things like…

Creating simple financial organization systems that

actually work Wanting to save more but not knowing how -- because

they never seem to have any money left over at the end of the month

Organizing their financial files and documents Being able to move past their internal blocks so they

can make more money



While these challenges emotionally weigh them down, people continue to wait for their calendars to clear and wait until they feel motivated to “buckle down and just do it.”

The problem is that the ideal day for doing this never arrives.

So instead we get caught up in working harder, trying to make more only to see all our hard earned money constantly disappearing into a dark hole, never to be seen again.



There’s always something that is vying for our attention-- some emergency that comes up,

or something else that we’d rather do. In Stephan Covey’s book, “First Things First,” he shares that our time is consumed by getting caught up in urgent and unimportant activities. Or in his words, “the urgent activities that are always acting on us.” The problem is that the important tasks often don’t act upon us – instead we have to act upon them and make them a priority -- otherwise the important tasks will never get attended to.



Most of us are at the effect of our to-do list

Most of us are at the effect of our own to-do list in our lives. We go through our days feeling time-crunched and overwhelmed. We wake up in the morning and immediately we’re “off to the races” as we rush from one task to the other.

This approach leaves us feeling drained and overwhelmed and often doesn’t result in us being nearly as productive as we’d like to believe.



So what’s the solution? The first step is to see that in reality we’re not REALLY at the effect of our to-do list.

If we believe that life is acting on us, and that we have no say over it– then we are not putting ourselves in a position of power to change it.

If in our minds we’re thinking, “Oh, it’s happening again - I’ve got too much to do. I’m too busy dealing with my life, I don’t have time sit down and think about money –I barely even have time to sit down and eat, I’ll never get ahead, things will never change!”… then we won’t gain access to shifting our situation, because we’re coming from a place where we believe that we don’t have any control or say over our life.



Whenever we notice we’re having this kind of conversation in our head we want to catch ourselves and be willing to experience ourselves as the source of what is happening in our lives –

regardless of whatever situation we’re in. By doing this we can gain access to shifting our situation.

Even though I coach my clients on this almost daily I’m not immune to this challenge myself. It’s simply a matter of being able to recognize when you’re caught up in reactivity and being willing to shift it in the moment.



I recently found myself experiencing overwhelm and caught myself thinking, “There is no way I can get everything done that needs to be done.

Who am I kidding anyway? ’There just isn’t enough time in the day with my schedule.”

While it might be true that I possibly might not get all my work done it wasn’t true that I was powerless to do something about it. The defeating conversation that I found myself having would only serve to keep me stuck and keep me “at the effect of my to do list.”



So instead I began to ask myself, “Am I willing to experience myself as being able to shift this experience.

And if so, what could I do differently right now?” I had several answers come to me when I asked myself this powerful question. As a result I got some books on time management, tweaked my schedule, so that I was scheduling my clients in way that gave me more open blocks of time and I began to get clear on what the most important task was for me to accomplish each day.

Did I do it perfectly the first time? No. Did this happen over night? No. Did I have to tweak my schedule continually, until it was a good fit? Yes. This is the same kind of approach that we want to take on when it comes to money. We want to let go of the belief that our lives are too busy to take control and step into our own personal power in regards to this very important aspect of our lives, so we can make money a priority.



It’s only when we come into our own personal power around money that we replace confusion, chaos and disorganization with clarity, confidence and freedom.

This is how we can free up our energy and creativity to do great things in the world.
