Identification of pollution sourceA peak is an event of interest in the measured gas data. In the scope of emission monitoring, peaks are suspected pollution concentrations from ships in the measured gas data.

The data processing is done automatically in the AirNow-cloud as the data becomes available for analysis. The purpose of data processing is to take in raw data from the station and produce reports with information about passing ships and measured pollution from them.

The analysis is done immediately after concentration levels have reached stable background levels. Maximum time from the time of measurement to the report being available at the AirNow web service is 10 minutes.

Finnish companies Meritaito Ltd and Kine Ltd have developed together Sniffer-buoy concept for IMO SO2 monitoring. The system consist of remote emission monitoring sensors capsulated inside robust polyethylene navigation buoy which send data to AirNow emission monitoring service.

COMPLIENCE MONITORING AS SERVICE

WhatAirnow is a monitoring system for new air pollution rules at sea, offered as service (pay per measurement).

Airnow service includes the operation of KINE Sniffer Stations, automatic analysis of measured information and real time reporting.

KINE Sniffer Station is a remote controlled measuring device to monitor the Sulphur content of ships emissions.

KINE Sniffer is an automated device with self-learning and self-diagnostics. The Airnow Service with KINE Sniffer Station is one of a kind in the world and the first vessel complience monitoring service with actual results.

WhyInternational Maritime Organization (IMO) has set regulations to limit the maximum Sulphur content of the ship emissions.

The State Parties of MARPOL (Marine Pollution) are responsible of monitoring and setting possible fines and sanctions in MARPOL area for ships not following the set regulations.

Airnow service dramatically lowers the surveillance cost for the Marpol state authorities. Targeting non-

compliant vessels and imposing a sanction is much easier than before.

Monitoring used to be handled with spot checking and actually visiting random vessels. With Airnow service all monitoring data is delivered to web-based platform and sms- and email notifications.

HowKINE Sniffer Stations are set to passage ways close to harbors or offshore to record Sulphur content of passing marine vessel exhaust gas emission.

WhereDuring 2016-2017 the monitoring service done in Baltic Sea area of Finland has given good results on finding vessels not following the set regulations. Project was implemented by KINE for Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).

In year 2020 the potential need for measuring systems will spread to world sea areas when the limits will change from 3.5% to 0.5% m/m.
