St. Michael’s National School
Tommy Markham Cup
Donál O’Sullivan came to our school on the last day of November with the Tommy Markham Cup. Dónal was met with huge cheers as he entered St Michael's National School to visit us and show us this beautiful trophy. After talking about Kerry's extraordi-nary 4 in a row victory Donál answered questions and offered our pupils tips and advice. St Michael's N.S was delighted to welcome Donál and the Tommy Markham Cup to our school! Ciarraí Abú!!
Genius Hour In September the children were given the ex-citing task of taking charge of their own learn-ing and choosing a topic to study in depth. They were asked to do a project on it and pre-sent it to parents and teachers using whatever method they liked. The idea behind Genius Hour is that if children choose to learn about something they enjoy or wonder about them-selves then they will be motivated to learn more, while perfecting all sorts of other skills (reading and writing for example) along the way.
For 2 months they worked in class for one hour a week (Genius Hour) researching, reading, organising and mak-ing. They also worked hard at home to complete the projects. On the 17th
of November parents and family came to see the work presented by each child. There were studies about the future of football, robotics and travel, many children based their work on animals, some did projects recording history and others learned a new skill. We were all blown away by the standard of work and also by the children’s conf idence as they explained their work. Congratulations to all the children.

Sneem Storytelling Festival
The Sixth Sneem International Storytelling and Folklore Festival 2017
We always believed this Festival would be the best so far and f rom the reactions and compliments f rom our audiences and per-formers our hopes were conf irmed! We
hope you felt the same. Storytelling in the barn attracted more people than we could ever have imagined. There were 2 bus loads and a number of cars who brought up around 60 people. Kate Corkery did two sessions in the barn whilst plenty of cheese scones and tea were served. Thank you to everybody involved in this event - we couldn’t have done it without you. The Wrestlers was host for the first of the Storytelling Ses-sions. Len Cabral and Jack Lynch had a large audience and they also held another session in Sneem Tavern on Satur-day af ternoon.
Our Storytelling Concert featured all our tellers plus Frances Kennedy f rom Listowel. This audience was the biggest we can remember particularly for a Friday night. They were very complimentary about all our tellers, Frances Kennedy particularly with her adult sense of humour! Then Tellers went into the village for the annual Pub Trail which continued late into the night. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the children were enter-tained by Len Cabral, and Kate Corkery, all were well at-tended sessions and held in the Sneem Community Crèche. Adults were catered for at various times and locations around the village with workshops and storytelling sessions featuring Jack, Len, Kate and Killian Burns. Sean Lyons was our guest lecturer, he has written novels, and poems about middle aged Irishman in various locations
and situations. We particularly enjoyed the story about the jellyf ish – you had to be there! Batt’s Blue Bull session had fans f rom all over the world crammed in to hear his stories. The South Kerry Rosen Choir performed Songs f rom Kerry. The Stone Outside Dan Murphy’s Door was accompanied by Killian on the accordion whilst Batt regaled us with stories and verses f rom our area. This was held in the Little Church by kind permission of Rev. Michael Kavanagh who also provided guitar accompaniment to several of the songs. Our Young Tellers, sponsored by the Friends of Muckross, are always a great success and drew a large audience who were spellbound by the abilities and talent of these young people. There were seven Young Tellers this year who are so full of life and who give a lot of pleasure to those watching them. They provide us with hope for the future of storytelling.
Page 13
Sneem Storytelling Festival
The play this year was “The Man in Woman’s Shoes” written and performed by Mikel Murf i. The enthusiastic response of our audience just conf irmed everything we had heard about the talent, energy and genius of Mikel. The much awaited representation of pigs, dogs, hens, sheep, and of course the dying turkey were better than we could have imagined. Kate Corkery performed an autobiographical storytelling “The Sweet Shop on the Shore” which proved to be not only popular by the large audience who attended
but as equally enthralling as Mikel Murf i the previous day. The Festival closed with two sessions of storytelling and story swap sessions in Riney’s and Murphy’s Bars. Both were well attended and funny with all our tellers involved. We particular-ly looked forward to Ger Coffey - the man in the hat who dis-played the storytelling talents of Sneem natives and he didn’t let us down. The Committee of the Festival would like to express their warm thanks to the following: Firstly of course to our fantastic storytellers and performers; Louis Moriarty, the Sneem Hotel and its helpful Staff; the businesses of Sneem, Sneem Com-munity Creche, the Church of the Transf iguration, Sneem De-velopment Co-op, and the community of Sneem as a whole; the various individuals who provided planned and unplanned support; Failte Ireland and Friends of Muckross House; Ste-phen Till and The South Kerry Rosen Choir; Susan Baugh-man our off icial photographer and John Vincent for getting so
many people to the barn. All our wonderful volunteers without whom none of our plans would actually become reality. We haven’t listed everyone by name be-cause the list grows bigger every year. Thank you all! Pictured performing are Batt Burns at the Storytelling Concert, Len Cabral, Our Young Tellers and Kate Corkery in The Sweet Shop on the Shore

Who knew Sneem had such talented models...we had 15 models displaying the designer dresses, which were a sample of some of the beautiful clothes available at Nearly New. There was a great turn out to support us, we had 80 people enjoying the evening. Julie Lee Knightly and Michelle Walsh did a great job as our MCs and auctioneers, thank you to them both. At the interval we had lovely f inger food to go with our wine...thank you to everyone who do-nated the food. Also thank you to Sharon Evans for organising the raff le, Ei-leen Burns for collecting the money and Maureen Connolly for her accountan-cy skills. Thanks also to our wonderful models, Patoni for their equipment, Claire Broom for assisting the models and for the props, and Joe Murphy and his team for moving furniture Thank you to Lisa O'Shea who designed our posters and was the photographer on the night. A big thank you to Joanne of Gossip and her team who made us feel so welcome. Let's hope this will be another annual event in Sneem's busy social calendar.
