Hold baggage screening has historicallyrepresented a major challenge to theaviation industry. The evolution of thisrequirement to include 100% inspection ofchecked baggage has now become a criticalelement in regaining traveler confidenceand assuring the future success of theaviation industry. After four years ofresearch and development, Smiths Heimannis proud to introduce the next generation ofautomatic hold baggage screeningtechnology, the HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS“Explosive Detection tomography System”.We strongly feel the combination ofdetection, throughput, reliability and overallquality will be the first technology to fullysatisfy the critical requirement of 100% holdbaggage screening.
On the highest levelThe automatic explosive detection system HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS represents the secondgeneration of the proven Smiths HeimannEDS technology. The abilities of the EDtS tomeet all of the requirements existing within a100% screening environment will support ourposition of offering the most sophisticated andcomprehensive solution to-date. In an effort to supportthis position, Smiths Heimann captures allservice history data to be used for bothquality control and reliability analysis. The results of these calculations for theEDS, the predecessor of the EDtS, is aMean-Time-Between-Failure of 1.4 years.We are confident that these reliabilityachievements will represent a minimumstandard to the new generation EDtS.
• DetectionThe EDtS offers the revolutionary approachof combining both physical signatures “Zeffective” (atomic number) and density.The analysis of both these criticalelements will allow the EDtS to offer thehighest detection rate in its class.
• ApertureWith a tunnel opening of 100 cm (39.37”)wide and 80 cm (31.49”) high, the EDtS willallow for the screening of even oversizedbaggage, avoiding the need to divert to analternate screening technology.
• ThroughputThe EDtS in combination with its detectioncapability, is able to screen up to 1,800bags per hour – setting a new standard forautomated screening technology.
• IntegrationThe EDtS,operating at 0.5 m/sec (ninetyfeet per minute), has been specificallydesigned to meet the challenges ofintegration. The EDtS offers the ability to beintegrated into existing or newly designedconveyor systems.
Within the proven multi-level method ofchecked baggage screening, all baggage isscreened automatically for explosives by ahigh speed Level 1 system, the EDtS. Bagscleared by EDtS continue to their determineddestination while rejected bags areautomatically diverted to a second securitylevel for further inspection. A commonconfiguration of the multi-level approachwould be to have an image of rejected bagsautomatically transferred to an operatorworkstation for visual inspection (Level 2).Should further scrutiny be necessary, theimage and bag are sent to Level 3. With thedecrease in throughput requirements forLevel 3 screeners, multiple technologiesexist for this application and implementationwill be dependent on the security philosophyof the airport.
Automation of the primary inspection processoffers the added benefits of reducing staffrequirements and recurring costs.

HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS
Level 2X-ray images of bags which wereautomatically determined to be suspicious atLevel 1 are subsequently evaluated at asecond level. The security screenerinterprets the images at a workstation. Tosupport accurate image interpretation, thesuspicious items in question are highlightedwithin a red frame. The brilliant imageresolution of the HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS givesthe screener the tools necessary to interpretthe image expeditiously. If the screener isunable to clear the bag, a Level 3 inspectionwill be necessary.
Level 3At Level 3, suspicious bags are analyzed infurther detail. These bags are checked by aninspection process defined individually byeach airport. For example, Level 3 may beaccomplished by utilizing additional X-rayprocedures with HI-SCAN equipment,opening of the bag in the presence of thepassenger, etc. In support of multi-levelsolutions, EDtS at Level 1 can be networkedin such a way as to provide the image of thesuspicious bag to the screener at any level.
Level 1Within the multi-level hold baggagescreening method, all baggage is screenedautomatically for explosives by means of theHI-SCAN 10080 EDtS. The majority of thebags are cleared at this level and directlytransported to the sorting system fortransport to the aircraft. X-ray images ofbags considered to be suspicious areautomatically forwarded to Level 2.

A total of five independent fan shaped X-raybeams scan every piece of baggage. Three X-ray generators, configured incomplementary positions, produce X-raybeams from five different angles. These fiveangles assist in the gathering of thesignificant information required to achievethe highest levels of detection.
Historically, the realization of high levels ofdetection has forced a compromise in thethroughput levels of detection equipment.This phenomena is simply based on thelimits of laws of physics for the traditional X-ray systems. The revolutionary EDtSultimately solves this need for compromise.
The utilization of material classification bymeans of Zeffective and volume/densityalgorithms results in, what we refer to,stationary computer tomography. Thistechnique allows for the highest level ofdetection combined with high baggagethroughput.
Data analysis,data storage,data transferInterconnection, operating an overall datanetwork, combines all relevant systemcomponents and allows even the mostvarying information to the right placewithin the shortest time. Since when itcomes to security a fast reaction time ismost essential.
