To counteract the danger of smuggled orhidden explosives, ICAO, ECAC and nationalauthorities require 100% screening of civilaviation baggage. The dramatic increase ofbaggage at airport check-in and conveyorpoints requires new technologies andsecurity systems to guarantee both smoothcheck-in procedures and heightened safety.

Traditionally, there are two levels of baggageinspection. At Level 1, a very fast automaticsystem detects suspicious objects inbaggage. At Level 2 and higher, trainedsecurity personnel intensively re-inspectindividual bags via X-ray image evaluation. At Level 2, visual inspection can lead to errorand false conclusions, due to brief periods ofinattentiveness by security personnel, ormisinterpretations caused by the monotonousnature of the work.

Smiths Heimann’s Automatic Systems haveproven its effectiveness in Level 1 examinationof large baggage quantities. More importantly,Smiths Heimann’s HI-SCAN 10065 HDX closesthe security gap between Level 1 and Level 2,offering comprehensive detection automaticallyand without cost-intensive personnel.

Maximum security at each levelAt Level 1, the Automatic Systems of SmithsHeimann guarantee maximum security. Evenat high throughputs of up to 1,800 baggagepieces per hour, automatic detection ofsuspicious materials and explosives isextremely reliable. This is guaranteed by twoindependent X-ray units which work ondifferent energy levels. If a bag is classifiedas suspicious it will be marked and theinformation will be transmitted to higherlevel security authorities for furtherinvestigation. At Level 2, possible misinter-pretations by operators are now ruled out bySmiths Heimann’s HI-SCAN 10065 HDXconfiguration. In fact, the system not onlycan spot suspicious objects in baggage, itwill also precisely identify the materialusing an in-depth method of automaticanalysis. A suspicious object is definitely

identified as either non-hazardous ordangerous. At this point, security personnelat follow-up inspection sites will beinformed of the results so that the suspectbaggage can undergo further, appropriateairport inspection.

The exact analysis of the explosive isfacilitated by the application of X-raydiffraction. This is a measurement of elasticX-ray scattering, a procedure widely used incrystallography for material identification.Precise and definitive determination is madeby running a comparison against anintegrated database in which specifications ofvarious types of explosives are stored.

How HI-SCAN10065 HDX worksBefore specific analysis of a suspicious object,an integrated pre-scanner determines itsprecise position within the baggage piece. Thisis necessary in order to maintain the necessarythroughput. The restriction of the analysis tothis very limited area has clear advantages:

• The time necessary to activate alarms andtake appropriate security actions will bereduced considerably

• The baggage piece will only be exposed toa localized, low X-ray dosage

How Smiths Heimann supports youWhile the HI-SCAN 10065 HDX system can be easily integrated into existing baggageconveyor systems, the requirements forincorporating automatic baggage inspectioncan change from airport to airport. That’swhy Smiths Heimann provides interdisciplinaryproject teams who make available specificsolutions – from task analysis and concept toinstallation. With Smiths Heimann you getconsultation and technology with onecomprehensive source.

HI-SCAN 10065 HDXRecognizes, identifies and analyzes hiddenexplosives automatically. Can be operated asa stand-alone system or integrated into anybaggage conveyor system.

With ordinary X-ray inspection systems, explosives are recognized by measuringtheir absorption degree of X-ray radiation, which varies from material to material. However, the X-ray absorption degree forsome non-hazardous materials is very closeto the X-ray absorption of explosives. Inthese cases, a next step in the inspectionprocess is required. The Smiths HeimannHI-SCAN 10065 HDX system can handle thistask fully and automatically, without anysecurity personnel. HI-SCAN 10065 HDXuses the X-ray diffraction method. Instead ofmeasuring the absorption of X-ray radiation, the material-specific elastic X-ray scatteringis measured – this procedure is widely usedin crystallography to determine materials.

The working principle of X-ray diffractionWith the standard synthesis for recognizingunknown crystals, the test object is exposedto a collimated X-ray beam and is surroundedby a film. The crystal structure of the testobject causes a characteristic X-raydiffraction of the radiation beam. This leavesa visible path of distinctive lines at differentangles on the film – a pattern which is, ineffect, the material’s specific fingerprint.Since X-ray diffraction is suitable for detectingexplosives including the particularly dangerousplastic explosives, the Smiths Heimann’s HI-SCAN 10065 HDX operates according to thisprinciple. In this case, the deflected X-rayradiation is not collected by means of a film, but by detectors, and is then directly convertedinto distinctive electrical signals.

The spectra are analyzed by the HI-SCAN 10065 HDX and the securitypersonnel at the next level are informed assoon as a suspicious object is identified as an explosive.

The HI-SCAN 10065 HDX X-ray diffractionunit is a conveyorized explosives detectionsystem which is based on a two stepanalysis. At the first step a modified EDSsystem detects the areas which may containexplosives. At the second step these“alarms” are finally analyzed by an X-raydiffraction system.

The system is designed to be integrated intoconveyor systems and can either be used forLevel 2 or Level 3 evaluation. It may also beused as a stand-alone system.
