Spring 2016 Smile REPORT As the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic (WCCDC) celebrates its anniversary, the Board of Directors, staff and children and families served by the clinic, would like to thank you for supporting the clinic and its programs and helping us get closer to our vision – that no one in Waukesha County suffers from dental pain. The clinic opened in May 2008 and provided low or no cost dental care to 958 individuals during its first year of operation. The WCCDC continues to grow and now serves as many as 3500 patients annually. This growth has only been possible by the generous community support and donations from people like you. Since its inception, more than $12 million in dental care has been provided to more than 12,000 patients in need. Providing care to low-income children and pregnant women remains our primary focus. However special funding and partnerships are allowing us to expand dental care to adults with special needs. We anticipate that the WCCDC will continue to grow, however, to ensure sustainability, we are committed to growing systemically to meet the need and working with partners. The WCCDC is the only full- time dental facility in Waukesha County that serves low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals who live in our county. Fees for services account only for 46% of our operating revenue. Every year, we must raise 54% of the money it takes to be a best-in-class dental home for children. Every gift makes a difference. A donation of $50 will provide disposable dental supplies for five appointments and $100 will support the cost of providing dental care for one patient. All donations to the WCCDC are tax-deductible. Please help us continue to create healthy smiles for children and vulnerable adults in Waukesha. We hope you will consider making a gift to Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic. We are thankful for any donation you are able to make. Your gift will help ensure that underprivileged individuals no longer suffer from dental pain and that they leave with a healthy smile. With gratitude, Renée Ramirez, Executive Director

Smile REPORT

As the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic (WCCDC) celebrates its anniversary, the Board of Directors, staff and children and families served by the clinic, would like to thank you for supporting the clinic and its programs and helping us get closer to our vision – that no one in Waukesha County suffers from dental pain.

The WCCDC is the only full-time dental facility in Waukesha County that serves low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals who live in our county.

With gratitude,

Renée Ramirez, Executive Director

WCCDC Expands the Adult Dental Programral health is an essential component

of general health. When tooth decay and gum disease are left untreated, serious complications can occur, including pain, inability to eat, poor appearance, and lost work days. Research has found associations between chronic oral diseases and diabetes, heart and lung disease, stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Since June 2012, the WCCDC Adult Dental Program has been providing dental treatment to 600 adults annually, and focuses on providing dental care to those who are medically compromised, do not insurance or have Medicaid insurance, and don’t have the means to pay due to low income or no income. For those who do not insurance, an initial appointment fee of $20, $25, or $30 is required, however, if it is determined that the patient has no means to pay, the fee is waived. The adults are strictly screened, must document low income which falls below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and must be a Waukesha County resident.

Special funding is allowing the WCCDC to expand the scope of dental care to include comprehensive exams, cleanings, restorations, and extractions to pregnant

women, adults with special health needs who have transitioned out of Children’s

Hospital of Wisconsin’s pediatric program, and older adults who are referred from the Aging Disability Resource Center.

All other adults who are referred to the WCCDC or call in with an urgent or emergent dental need are triaged, treated at the WCCDC or referred out for treatment to one of the dentists in our volunteer

network. Treatment fees are deeply discounted, which are determined by the

WCCDC Clinic Manager and are based on an individual’s income and ability to pay. The fees are the same whether at the WCCDC or private dental office.

The WCCDC works closely with key partners to coordinate care for those you are in greatest need. The clinic gives priority to referrals from Waukesha County Free Clinics, the Waukesha Family Practice Center,

the Waukesha Community Health Center, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Emergency Departments, Hispanic Health Resource Center, Waukesha County (HHS, PNCC, WIC, ADRC, etc.) or other social service agencies who provide services to the same population.

O

n 2016, a special $25,000 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, is supporting the costs of providing dental care and paying for lab fees for elderly adults, who are frail, with little or no family support; a majority of whom are severely medically compromised. Older patients who have gone without dental care, tend to require extensive dental care, which takes significantly more

time to coordinate and facilitate, and many time seniors have problems getting to appointments without help. A special partnership with the Waukesha County Aging Disability Resource Center helps to ensure that there are no barriers to patients completing their treatment, which means that that they

return home without pain, infection, and have a healthy smile.

Give Kids A Smile 2016 he Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic has

participated in the Give Kids A Smile event since 2008, providing free dental care to as many as 50 low-income children each year.

In February 2016, WCCDC partnered with the Waukesha Sunrise Rotary Club and 23 local volunteer dental professionals during a two-day event to provide free, comprehensive dental care to 45 children identified as not having a dentist. Collectively the volunteers and staff donated more than 342 hours to this annual project. Parents brought their child to the clinic for an exam, x-ray, dental cleaning, sealants, fluoride varnish treatment, and both parent and child received oral hygiene instruction.Thirty children required follow up dental care and returned for treatment which included fillings for cavities and/or extractions. The value of care provided exceeded $30,000. All 45 children now have a dentist and can call the WCCDC their dental home.

T

Everyone Deserves a Healthy Smile

$50 will pay for one child to receive an exam and have his/her teeth cleaned.

$100 will help us purchase disposable dental supplies for ten patients.

$250 will help us reinforce healthy oral habits for 50 children.

$500 will enable 10 patients to receive preventive dental care.

$1,000 will enable us to provide complete restorative dental care for one child who is experiencing the pain of dental cavities.

Our program fees cover only 45% of our operating costs. Your DONATION will make a real difference:
