SMC Wireless

Modem Setup

Setting up the SMC Wireless Modem Security

First, open your Internet Explorer window and type the following address exactly as shown into the address bar and press enter. This will log you

into the modem’s gateway for internal settings.

SMC address: 192.168.0.1

You should now see the following login page.

Type in the SMC default username and password and click on Login.

Username: cusadmin Password: password

After logging in you should be at the Gateway Setup page. On the left hand side of the page you’ll see the different menu options. Click on the

Wireless menu option.

You should now be in Wireless Basic Settings menu.

In the middle of the page there are a few options, note the bottom option Channel. By default, the wireless channel is set to Auto. Click on the drop

box and select a channel above 5 and then click apply.

If you want to change your SSID (it’s the name of your wireless connection) from the default BDC27D0 to something easier to distinguish from other

wireless devices nearby, you will just need to change the SSID Name and click the apply icon.

With the wireless channel set, click on the Encryption sub-menu under Wireless, which will take you to the Wireless Encryption Settings menu.

Locate the WPA_Personal settings in the middle of the page.

Starting with the first option, WPA Mode, change the setting from the default option of “AUTO (WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK)” and select either

“WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK”.

The next setting under Cipher Type will need to be changed from the default option of “TKIP and AES” to “AES ONLY” and click the APPLY icon.

The following images show what the settings will look like before and after

the above changes.

Take note of the Pre-shared Key, since this is the passkey for your

wireless network. After you’ve applied your changes, simply log out of the modem’s gateway setup. Your SMC Wireless modem is now secured and

ready to surf.

On your computer, you can view available wireless networks by clicking on Start (Windows 7 or older versions), then go to Connect To and click on

wireless connections. Select your wireless network SSID and click Connect. Type in the Pre-shared Key in the box asking for your security

key or passphrase and click connect. You should now be connected to your wireless network.
