Road research in FP7• What: Holistic approach to an integrated, safer, 'greener' and 'smarter' pan-

European transport systems for the benefit of all citizens and society, while respecting the environment and natural resources and developing the competitiveness of European industries

• Main RTD priorities: – Greening of transport (air quality, decarbonisation, use of resources)– Sustainable urban transport– Logistics and co-modality– Improving safety and security– Strengthening competitiveness

• Funding:– 4.6 B€ over the whole transport sector

European Green Cars initiative

• What: One of the three PPP for research and innovation proposed in the European recovery Plan of 2008. EGCI includes three action lines: research, innovation and demand side measures.

• Main RTD priorities: – Electrification of road and urban transport; – Improved energy efficiency for heavy-duty vehicles; – Logistics and co-modality

• Original Funding:– Up to € 500 million for research + 4B€ EIB loans

• Research, development and demonstration of technologies to enable more energy efficient vehicles using alternative powertrains, strengthening the future competitiveness of the automotive industry, following CARS 2020 Strategy.

• Help to reach the ambitious targets set by the EU transport, energy and climate protection policies:

–- the 20/20/20 targets on renewable energy use, –- the CO2 emissions regulation, –- the Euro emissions standards for road vehicles

• Match the transport needs within the EU with highly efficient and more flexible mobility products/services, by providing EU citizens with best-in-class technology, and matching with the Grand Societal Challenges, e.g. decarbonisation, safety, etc.

• Support the policy goals of the EU Transport White Paper thanks to accelerated research, development and demonstration of technologies that allow the efficient use of clean energies in road vehicles.

• Defined goal and focus: energy efficiency of vehicles and alternative powertrains• Only topics responding to this goal fall within the scope, other topics to be covered

in other parts of EU funding programmes.

• Logistics aspects are no longer included in the Initiative.
