Smart Cities need Smart Data

“Smart cities use information and communication technologies (ICT) to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.”

422 Available Datasets many coming from partner data agreements such as City of Lyon, JC Decaux, Region of Rhone Alpes etc

Data Services including; Data Discovery, Visualization and Download (OGC KML, JSON) and some Real-time Services

Many more in progress

Architecture

Middle Office tools for Data Preparation, Compilation & Publishing

Back Office for production of static reference data sets compiled FME Desktop

Front Office making data available to users

FME in Context

FME Desktop Grand Lyon already using FME extensively. Used for internal data compilation and loading

Why FME Server? FME Server is used for loading real-time data from data partners Solution similar to FME desktop already in use Additional functionality already available from notification such as directory

watcher and email and now FTP watcher Easily scalable Economically viable

Real Time Data

SourcesFrom Sensors, accidents reports, data managers, web services…. and made available by partners on external servers

Examples: XML files dropped on an FTP server for road traffic Road events (European standard Datex 2) Parking spaces available as JSON Service API provided by JC Decaux for information of Vélo'v stations

Real Time Data Processing Requirements

Use data as it becomes available Do not exceed 10 seconds processing time Do not interrupt the service for maintenance Manage interruptions and create business alerts Maintain continuous availability and consistency

of data in the target database (single transaction)

Real Time Example – Traffic Data

Real Time Example – Traffic Data

magnetic loops built into roads get traffic data controllers use a modem or 3G connection to send data to

an Oracle database Traffic data is aggregated by road section and exported

every 60 seconds as XML documents to an FTP server. a few seconds after the XML is placed on FTP Server FME

Server processes it and updates the PostGIS middle office database

database is replicated live to the front office and the data is available to all on the SmartData portal.
