The assignment of this physical connectivity relies upon the physical inventory for information such as subscriber location and availability of infrastructure. It is in support of this process that Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment (fully integrated with the rest of the OSS\BSS) can deliver significant benefits which enable “flow through” provisioning – the ability to seamlessly qualify if a customer can be connected, assign network and initiate field activities. Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment automates the assignment of physical inventory to a service request – whether that is from within the operator’s own business or from a third party provider. When a request is received Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment identifies the customer location (or if this is not available yet the closest network terminal) and then determines the physical path upstream from that point back to a main serving location, which could be a street cabinet or a central office. Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment builds all necessary network connections, i.e. jumpers, cross-connects, splitter connections, etc. to construct the physical path. This path and the details of the work required to activate the path are then returned to the requesting system for further action. Underpinning Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment is the physical inventory data held in Smallworld Physical Network Inventory. This, unique, spatially accurate inventory ensures that accurate assignments can be performed. Increases ‘first time turn up’ of service based on fully connected physical network Reduces cost of installation failures though reduction in number of installation truck rolls required Improves quality of service as a result of more accurate provisioning Clean separation of physical and service layers so that all interactions with the physical inventory and path management can be managed through Smallworld Physical Resource Assignment Faster response to customer requests and improved customer experience Reduction in network build costs through avoidance of unnecessary network build Key Benefits

DriversforChangeInordertorealizethevisionofanextgenerationnetworkanddelivernewservicesandgrowthesubscriberbasetoreturnahealthyprofittoshareholders, telecommunicationserviceprovidersneedtofocusonall aspectsof theiroperations. This includes twovitalbusinessprocesses –networkengineeringand service fulfillment. Bothareunderpinnedbytheneedforaccuratenetworkinventorythatensuresthataservicereadynetworkisinplacetosupportcustomerdemandandthatnewservicescanbeprovisionedinacost-effectivemanner.

This is becoming increasingly critical in the separated operatingmodelthatisbeginningtobeadoptedinmanypartsoftheworld.Inthismodelthetraditionalincumbentserviceproviderisseparatedintodifferent companies, typically a network company and an operating company. Alternatively entirely new telecommunication providersarebeingcreatedtosupportcreationofnewFTTHnetworks.Withinsuchanoperatingmodelthenetworkcompany’sresponsibilityistoprovideaphysicalpathtoenabletheoperatingcompanytoprovideserviceon-topofthisphysicalpath.

It is absolutely critical that the OSS are sufficiently separated toensure that all processes operate independently. For examplephysicalassignmentcannotbeentwinedwithorderhandling, logicalserviceprovisioningandserviceactivation, aswasoftenthecaseinmanylegacysolutions.
