The 2016 Small Business Person of the Year Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, August 18

Involvement. The luncheon event will also feature keynote speaker Thane Maynard, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Thane Maynard is the Executive Director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The mission of his work mirrors that of the zoo - to celebrate and share the story of wildlife and conservation. Thane has authored more than a dozen books, the most recent, “Hope For Animals & Their World,” was coauthored with Jane Goodall. He has also shared science and environmental news nationwide through his longtime public radio program, “The 90-Second Naturalist.” Maynard’s travels have spanned five continents in promoting biological diversity, natural history and wildlife conservation, earning him a membership in the Explorers Club. He is a professional fellow of the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Margo Marsh Biodiversity Foundation, a primate conservation fund headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The luncheon is sponsored by First Financial Bank. The cost to attend is $30 for Chamber members and $35 for non-members. Please make reservations online at www.hamilton-ohio.com or by calling or emailing the Chamber at 844-1500/[email protected].

STATE OF THE CITY
As an operator of a local manufacturing company, I heard this question frequently. My answer was that my Chamber membership brought significant benefit to me by connecting me to other manufacturers in the region. However, the answer to this question is as varied as the members of the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce (GHCC). Many members value the networking opportunity with other business peers and the chance to make new business connections. Others find that the advocacy that the Chamber does on your behalf is critical and that the Chamber’s connections to government officials is beneficial in keeping the wheels of progress moving forward. Still other members know that being a part of the Chamber is an opportunity to give back to their community by bringing the influence of their organization to bear. Regardless of the reason, belonging to the Chamber should bring value and a benefit to your organization and we endeavor to continue to do that in a variety of ways.
Over the past several months, the Chamber has continued with our good work and has taken this opportunity to reflect on our efforts and get reenergized in what we do. Not only do we continue to be strong legislative advocates, take a leading role in regional workforce development, have a strong presence in the community by working with the City and the County, and help members to better connect, we have begun to strengthen our ties with other regional chambers to take advantage of the fact that we are a key Chamber in Southwest Ohio – one of the strongest business regions of the country.
Your legislative affairs team is working with key members of a number of other Southwest Ohio Chamber legislative affairs teams to strengthen our voice and the ability to advocate for business in our region. The Chamber team is reformulating the Manufacturers Roundtable in conjunction with the Hamilton Mill to bring new energy to this highly influential segment of our economy. In addition we are working to build on this model by developing roundtables in other key sectors of Butler County business. We are continuing to explore new opportunities to keep you informed (such as our blog posts) in a more timely fashion and to bring you new and exciting opportunities for improving your business.
We are committed to continuing to grow and improve our responsiveness to the needs of our businesses and hope that all of you will strongly advocate on the Chamber’s behalf to other businesses that we are a critical partner in your success. As we have said before, the Chamber is a membership organization and is here to help you. Please feel free to reach out to any of the Chamber staff to discuss concerns, issues, or opportunities with which the GHCC may be able to help you as a partner.
The first-ever payroll True-up period for private employers begins July 1, 2016. Payroll true-up reports are due to BWC no later than Aug. 15, 2016.
At the end of each private employer policy period ( July), it is necessary to reconcile estimated payroll with actual payroll. This is called the True-up. This report can be completed online at: http://ow.ly/4mWUlm or over the phone by calling 1-800-644-6292.
This new payroll True-up process is part of prospective billing, and as a result, Ohio businesses are now required to reconcile their actual payroll annually for the prior policy year and also reconcile any differences in premium paid. According to BWC, the True-up allows more accurate
premium calculation. Even if actual payroll for the year matches the original BWC estimate or a business had zero payroll, the True-up report must be completed.
The quickest and easiest way to True-up is online with a BWC e-account. If you do not have a BWC e-account you can create one by signing on to: https://www.bwc.ohio.gov/SelfSvcAccountAdmin/newacc.asp.
You can also complete the True-up through the BWC call center however wait times may be extremely high, as a result BWC encourages the use of their online reporting system.

A message from Scott Ellsworth, Interim President & CEOSCOTT’S COLUMN
IMPORTANT NOTEAgain, August 15, 2016 is the due date for your True-up report to be completed with BWC. This is a critical deadline, as the BWC has indicated that if a business does not complete the True-up timely, they may not be eligible for current, and future alternative rating and premium discount programs such as Group Rating and Group Retrospective Rating. Once more, reports must be submitted either online at (http://ow.ly/4mWUlm) or by phone at 800.644.6292.

The 25th Annual Business Expo & Job Fair was held at Hamilton High School. Over 120 people attended the kick off luncheon featuring Liz Bonis, Local 12. The Luncheon was sponsored by: Butler Tech, Hamilton High School and Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital.
For the fourth year, the Business Expo included a Job Fair which was held in partnership with OhioMeansJobs - Butler County. Twenty-nine businesses participated in the Job Fair to connect with job seekers.
Businesses were showcasing and selling products to an estimated 800+ business leaders, decision makers, end users and the general public during the three hour event. We hope you took time to explore the Expo & Job Fair and support your fellow Chamber members. Businesses reported enjoying networking with businesses, the diversity of attendees, receiving exposure for their company, the variety of vendors and the delicious food!
Thank you to the participating food vendors for providing a wide variety of delicious samples during the Expo & Job Fair: Culver’s, Fairfield Foodies Catering Company, G & J Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Richards Pizza, and Texas Roadhouse.
Thank you to the Expo 2016 Committee: Pam Dunaway, Scott Ellsworth, Sherry Gainor, Gene Hutzelman, Jeff Kilby, Stewart Leonard, Carol Lucio, Laura Merrill, Dee Meyers, Maureen Miller, Andrew Nathan, Landen O’Banion, Melissa O’Brien, Rudy Rattman, Mark Scharnhorst, Greg Silva, Ron Smith, Mary St. John, and Lois Wellner. Without the hard work and dedication of this committee, we would not be able to host such a successful event!
Golfers enjoyed a beautiful day for the Chamber’s Golf Classic XXXIII held at Twin Run Golf Course. There were many prize winners for the day including the foursome of Kerry Hicks, Steve Ronigen, TJ Wilson and Dan Richter who won for their low score in the scramble. There were also many winners in the raffle drawing thanks to the many Chamber members who donated prizes! We would like to give special thanks to our Golf Committee, which put a lot of hard work into the planning of this event. Its members include: Joe Belew, Chair; April Adams; Mike Allen; Jason Austerman; Rich Bethart;
Chris Connell; Kenny Craig; Scott Ellsworth; Michelle Grant; Ryan Kidd; Becky King; Chris Lindeman; Nancy O’Neill; Dave Reichle; and Rob Weigel. Mark your calendar for next year’s Golf Classic XXXIV – June 5, 2017.
