What is SAICU?•Located at the College of Vet Med!•Program that allows participants to work hands-on with ICU patients and clients, as well as work face-to-face

with veterinarians and veterinary students in real life emergency

situations

What Does the SAICU Do?•The SAICU is a 24-hour emergency

and critical care service•A veterinarian is on staff at all times

•Specialists are also on staff during the day and on call after hours for any

emergencies

How Does the Program Work?• There are three shifts each Saturday and Sunday

• 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM• 11:00 AM-3:00 PM• 3:00 PM- 7:00 PM

• Volunteers must show up for their shifts• Unlike NICU, you do not get called in for your shift• You will be paired with someone who can drive• You are responsible for switching shifts with another

volunteer if you cannot make the shifts you are scheduled for

What Will I Do As a Volunteer?

• Learn from the ICU veterinary students, technicians, and interns

• Assist the ICU staff with:• Emergency triage

• Determining heart and respiratory rate• Determining oxygen saturation

• Stabilizing the patient• Some medical procedures• Blood work and other diagnostics

• Nebulizing • Ultrasounds

• Hourly patient care duties• Feeding and walking patients

Why Should I Volunteer?• Gain animal experience in a medical setting

• Learn new procedures and medical terminology

• Become more familiar with ISU College of Veterinary Medicine

• Meet other PVC members, as well as doctors and vet students

• Looks great on vet school applications!

Where is the SAICU Located?

• ISU College of Veterinary Medicine• 1600 S. 16th Street

• Drive south on University Blvd. past football stadium

• Turn left on South 16th St. • Take the second right into Entrance A• Follow signs to Small Animal Hospital

How Do I Sign Up?• Pay PVC dues by deadline (Oct 25th)

• $10 per semester (or $17 all year)

• Drop dues off in 120 Kildee (silver box drop-DUES ONLY) or bring a check or money to the next meeting.

• Fill out survey we will send out next week
