Information - Many of these calls received on the hotline are requests for materials regarding compulsive gambling. These requests are from students, researches, academicians, treatment professionals, news media, lay persons, government agencies, neighborhood groups, law enforcement agencies, etc. These materials describe the fact that compulsive gambling is a treatable illness and describe the treatment modalities, symptoms, danFSer signs, and present an overview of compulsive gambling . The Maryland State Lottery, at the request and assistance of the CGC has distributed and "awareness" pamphlet to all venders lasting characteristics of a compulsive gambler.

Part III, Line A - (PROGRAM SERVICES

24 Hour Hiotline - A national 24 how compulsive gambling hotline is monitored by volunteers and staff members of the Compulsive Gambling Center, Inc., (CGC) . Approximately 3,000 hours were donated to operate the crisis hotline . This volunteer service was performed during weekends and after business hours of the CGC, calls are answered by staff members and data generated by these calls is analyzed and entered into a computer data base for research purposes. The hotline personnel are responsible for the following :

Suicide Culls - Callers who are suicidal are defused and, when necessary, committed to the closest medical facility for treatment . Close cooperation is maintained with local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the tracing of calls to locate the caller when it appears that a suicide threat may be carried out . When the situation is stabilized, the caller is referred to the; nearest professional provider or treatment facility . When possible, a follow up coal will be made to the distressed caller to determine their current mental state with the intent to assist inn the recovery process .

Referrals - Callers who admit to a gambling problem are interviewed to make a preliminary determination as to their immediate needs . If circumstances wan-ant, a referral is made to a treatment facility nearest residence . Callers are also referred to self-help group meetings (Gamblers Anonymous and Gam Anon) in their areas. Some callers admit to other types of addictions, i.e ., alcohol or drugs, and are also referred to self-help groups and/or treatment facilities addressing the addictions .

NOTE: The interrelationship inherent in the above described activities precludes a separation of costs for each activity .

PARif III, LINE, B, TRAINING/RESEARCH/EDUCATION:

Training - The CGC provides training for professional providers, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) representatives, government agencies (States and Federal Departments of Mental Health), and the Probation Department of the judicial system . This training consists of various crimes committed by compulsive gamblers, impact of incarceration, sentencing, restitution, and treatment options .

Restareh - Data gleaned from the hotline and treatment results of the gambler and family members is used as a research base to study the incidence and prevalence of compulsive gambling . Activities of the gambler, while afflicted with the illness, are used to study the social and economic impact they have on society. Studies are also initiated to monitor treatment results to ascertain preventive measures and reduce occurrences of relapse. A study was conducted on behalf of the Maryland Department of Meal Health and Hygiene to determine the incidence and impact of compulsive gambling on the citizens of the state of Maryland . This report was compiled at no cost to the state of Maryland and the committee was co-chaired by the Director of the CGC.

Education - The CGC strives to educate the community on the characteristics of compulsive gambling and the fad that it is a treatable disorder. The CGC has participated in over 255 media presentations (radio, television, and news papers) with the intent to familiarize the public about the disorder and to dispel myth and misconceptions of a compulsive gambler's actions. Seminars were conducted for community organizations on the disruptive aspects of compulsive gambling, and its impact an society, for use as training aides and community education.

PART III, I.IIYE C - TREATMENT

Treatment - The CGC provides treatment to compulsive gamblers and their families using a variety of modalities, i.e ., cognitive therapy, art therapy, group therapy, biofeedback and stress management, individual therapy, psychodynamic therapy, addiction education, etc. When a situation arises, treatment is provided pro bono or at a reduced rate to facilitate the treatment process .
