CONTEXT OF RIGHTS AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES IN AFRO-ASIAN REGION”

Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture Government of the Republic of Sudan and the Ahfad University for Women, Omdurman, Sudan held the International Workshop on “The Role of Women Leaders in Empowering Rural Women in the Context of Rights and Development Issues in Afro-Asian Region” at Omdurman, Sudan on the 20-25 April 2011

The objectives:

•To understand the role of women leaders in empowering rural women;•To provide a forum to share information on women status in the social, economic, political and legal prospective;•To review the initiatives taken by different stakeholders at local, national and international level for women empowerment;•To highlight the role of women leaders in bringing about the social change;•To review the role of women leaders in influencing and promoting the international agenda such as Beijing Declaration & Platform for Action, Millennium Development Goals, and the national policies;•To discuss the major challenges and the possible interventions to mainstreaming women in development; and • To explore the scope of women empowerment in the present scenario.

11TH ASEAN SENIOR OFFICIALS MEETING ON

TRANSNATIONAL CRIME (SOMTC)The Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Singapore held the 11th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting On Transnational Crime (SOMTC) on the 25-29 July 2011 in Singapore with the following objectives:

•To acknowledge the members regarding latest information on transnational crime status happening in every ASEAN countries;• To discuss about efficient mechanisms in countering transnational crimes that have been more sophisticated recently in order to be able to minimize them. Among those transnational crimes are:

• Trafficking in Persons• Cyber Terrorism and Cyber Crime• Money Laundering• Sea Piracy• Telecommunication Fraud• Illegal Immigration and border crossing etc.

•To maximize cooperation and communication among ASEAN member countries with outside authorities and contribute towards eradicating transnational crimes
