PRESIDENT’S LETTER – Lew Leichter
March 2016 John Gierach: “As a fly tier you can’t get other worldly because a beautiful fly that doesn’t catch fish is not a beautiful fly. On the other hand evaluating a fly solely on whether it catches fish is like saying a painting of Elvis on velvet is as good as a Picasso because both will cover a crack in the plaster.”
Speaking of fly tiers, I had a chance to meet Skip and Carol Morris at the Pleasanton Show. Skips program at our banquet will be on creek fishing. Per Skip it has always been a fine fit with the mix of fishing and non-fishing attendees at banquettes. It's a little about strategies and tackle and such, but it's mostly humor and pretty photos and the pleasures of exploring small waters. Looks like we will have a good turnout at the banquet, and the Sunday morning Tying session with Skip and Carol is “sold out”. NEW MEMBERS: Lots of new members to welcome: Wes Cooke, Justin Foss, Margaret Hamilton, Ernest Kent, Troy Lindwall, Vince Morici, Jim Pech, Tom Schaffer, Matt Southwood and Roger Welt. We look forward to getting to know you better and spending time on the water with you. Speaking of new members, we will be repeating our Fly Fishing 101 class in April. We would also like to do an introduction to float tubing class soon but need to find a suitable venue. Rich and I recently checked out Santa Margarita and while there is enough water and we caught some bass, getting to the water is a challenge. If you have a location to suggest let us know. BANQUET MARCH 19th 2016: See below for list of items that will be available in the Silent Auction. If you are unable to attend the banquet you can still support your club by purchasing and mailing in the $25 in raffle tickets, you received with your invitation. You need not be at the banquet to win and the banquet raffle will include among other things: a complete Rajeff Echo Ion surf outfit, a Redington Voyant 4pc 5wt outfit, Sage rod cases, a Rajeff Echo Glass fiber glass rod, numerous fly lines etc.

SLFF Tying Group - Jim Snodgrass
Skwala Unit Fly The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, March 3rd at 6:30. Paul Crafts will demonstrate how to tie the Skwala Unit Fly, a dry fly that imitates a large stonefly. The stonefly is common to the West, especially California in the lower Yuba River below Englebright Dam and in the Truckee River. Paul learned of this fly in 2013 when he went fishing out of Grass Valley in Nevada County and caught a rainbow trout on this pattern.
Paul Craft’s hand tied Skwala Unit fly
The fly that Paul is demonstrating is only one of the many Skwala patterns. The stonefly color varies by location, resulting in a variety of patterns and colors tied by fly fishers. Paul is borrowing the pattern from Jon Baiocchi, who named this particular fly, the Skwala Unit. The Nov. /Dec issue of California Flyfisher 2014 (pg 32-33) featured an article by Jon Baiocchi on the Skwala Unit fly, including the tactics and locations for using the fly. Materials: Commercially tied Skwala Fly Thread - Dark Brown 6/0 Hook - Tiemco 101 size 10 (dry fly hook, longish shank) Upper Body - Yellow olive Vernille or Chenille substitute Extended Over Body - Larva Lace (the manufacturer) black foam cut into 1/8 inch wide segments
the length of the hook. Wing - White poly yarn Head - Moose hair (black to dark brown), tied bullet style Legs - Large round rubber, brown in color
The tying instructions for the Skwala fly are available and will be e-mailed to the fly tying group and other interested parties. Give Jim Snodgrass a call (543-3738) if you are not a part of the fly tying group but would like to have the instructions. All materials will be supplied, but be sure and bring your own thread. Paul recommends dark brown 6/0.
The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on
Thursday, February 7th at 6:30pm.

The Best Deal Around, a Report on the SLFF Club Casting Clinic 2016
The Club Casting Clinic 2016 was held on three Saturdays in January and February at Laguna Lake SLO. The clinic was organized by Eric Sherar and Bernard Pieters and presented by our five IFFF certified casting instructors: Bernard Pieters Arroyo Grande 489-3085 [email protected] Eric Sherar Atascadero 423-0170 [email protected] Bob Hurd Arroyo Grande 550-9071 [email protected] Todd Tose Grover Beach 904-5288 [email protected] Chad McPartland Paso Robles 441-0744 [email protected] Sally Stoner Halcyon 550-9509 [email protected] The sessions were well attended from the start and had increasing attendance (25 + by the third session). The weather cooperated (from an approaching storm to windy but always a learning experience). Session one concentrated on casting mechanics and reinforcing good casting habits, session two was about fly presentation and being a more productive fly fisher, and session three was about improving casting distance. The support of the club, (the clinic was free), the friendly but professional learning experience provided by the instructors, and the interaction with other club members all made the clinic the best value around. Robert Hartzell PLEASANTON FLY FISHING SHOW: Our club was well represented. Madeline and George Protsman, Jennifer and Pierre Labrecque, Scott McCaslin, Bill Richmond, Steve Soenke, Don McGeorge, Larry Sederberg, Terry Croxton, Ray Belknap, Bob Bayer, Rich Chubon and I had a good time. Thanks to Madeline and George for hosting our Saturday evening get together. Thank you letter from Mike Kaul regarding his Wyoming Fly Fishing Presentation: It was a pleasure to visit your outstanding club and have such an enthusiastic response to my presentation on fly fishing in Wyoming. Please extend my deepest appreciation to the entire club for their wonderful hospitality and great camaraderie. I especially want to thank you for setting up our visit. I hope that we will see you and some of your club members in our area in the near future. I have already received an inquiry from your club. I did visit your club, but it may have been ten or so years ago. If you and other club members enjoyed my presentation, I would appreciate it if you would e-mail a note about the show to our Chamber of Commerce e-mail: [email protected] and Lakeside Lodge and Resort e-mail: [email protected]. We would like them to know how we are representing the area. Best regards, Mike
