July 2017 John Gierach: “The first time you hit a good hatch you wish it was like this every day, but soon you begin to see it can’t be and probably shouldn’t be. If there were much more of an outside chance of success, you would quickly become bored with fishing and start playing the stock market. In the long run, fishing usually amounts to a lifetime of pratfalls punctuated by rare moments of perfection. On the best day of fishing you will ever have you still won’t be able to catch them all.”

NEWSLETTER CHANGING OF THE GUARD: Mary Lugo with the assistance of Greg has done a great job as our newsletter editor for the last several years. This will be their last one and we all want to say a big “Thank you for a job well done”. We will take our normal months’ vacation in August from publishing a newsletter and when we return Mike Powers will return as the editor. BANQUET RESULTS and 2017 BUDGET: We netted about $4,800 from our fund-raising efforts, this compares to $6,100 in 2016, $6,000 in 2015 and $4,600 in 2014. With this the board approved a 2017 budget that includes $2,000 for donations and $1,000 to treat members to the club picnic on August 5th. DONATIONS: Speaking about donations, the club recently responded to some requests. See notes and letters below. We do have funds left in our donation budget, please contact a board member if you have a suggestion. JULY PROGRAM: Our guest will be Ann Kitajima. Ann is the Assistant Director of the Morro Bay National Estuary Program (www.mbnep.org). Ann’s programs are of local interest and always interesting (see below for additional info).

SLFF ANNUAL PICNIC and HALIBUT OUTING

Please join us Saturday August 5th - We are having a catered BBQ so please RSVP to Sheri Bryant (474-8950 or [email protected]) by July 27th so we can advise caterer. Time: arrive early, get in some practice halibut fishing and or enjoying the beach. Lunch will be served around noon. Location: Between Avila Beach & Port san Luis in the area of Fisherman’s beach. Look for the bright red SLFF banner. Food: Catered tri-tip, chicken, cole slaw, bread & beans. Water and soft drinks will be provided.

Cost: Free to first 60 RSVP’s (2 per member) after that $10 per person. Raffle: In addition to the regular stuff we’ll put together some special raffle items. “A Watershed Approach to Healthy Fish”

Ann Kitajima Morro Bay National Estuary Program

The Morro Bay National Estuary Program works to protect and restore the Morro Bay estuary and its watershed for people and wildlife. For the past 20 years, the Estuary Program has focused on three programmatic areas to achieve its goals: monitoring and research, restoration and conservation, and education and outreach. The Estuary Program tracks long-term conditions in the estuary and watershed, protects land through restoration and conservation easements, and works with visitors and residents alike to share a message of stewardship. The Estuary Program works to monitor, protect, and restore habitats for some of the area’s most sensitive residents, including the South Central California Coast Steelhead, which is classified as “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. Every three years, the Estuary Program compiles a report card answering common questions such as, “Is the water in the creeks and bay clean enough for fish and aquatic life?”, “Does Morro Bay support healthy eelgrass beds?”, and “Do the estuary and watershed support a healthy population of steelhead?” In her presentation, Ann will address these questions and more, as well as share some preliminary research from the NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center on the drought impacts on steelhead.

Ann Kitajima served as the Monitoring Program Manager for the Estuary Program from 2002 through 2016, directing and overseeing monitoring efforts throughout the bay and creeks. In 2016, she became the organization’s Assistant Director, with responsibilities including programmatic oversight, strategic planning, and grant management. She continues to provide support in monitoring planning and development. Prior to her time with the Estuary Program, she worked for an environmental consulting firm conducting permitting and remediation projects throughout California. She holds engineering degrees from UC Berkeley and UC Irvine and has been a Central Coast resident for nearly 20

Featured the Muskrat Nymph

The last fly tying session was held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, June 27th. Jim Snodgrass demonstrated the Muskrat Nymph. The Muskrat Nymph was created by Oregon fly-tying legend Polly Rosborough whose philosophy of fly tying was that the patterns should “simulate the action of insect life versus trying to imitate the literal composition of aquatic insects.” The Muskrat Nymph is effective when the nymphs are close to maturity and the transformation from aquatic to air born insect is nearing. Trout are not generally selective of their food source until an abundance of a certain food item becomes available. During the time when trout are feeding on several types of nymphs, the generic nymph is attractive. The Muskrat nymph is not weighted, rather it moves freely in the water column.

Halibut Outing – Port San Luis – July 8th We fly-fishers are all the time in search of (new) fishing waters and have many times overlooked what our coastal waters have to offer. Just a few members have experience in halibut fishing. Considering the fishing location "almost in our backyard" it is surprising we don't see more members tap into this great fishing opportunity! Last July the bite was on and some fish were caught in every fishing trip. Adding to this, we enjoyed for a short period some of the best halibut fishing in the last 10 years with 4-8 hook-ups per fishing tide. Most were in the 18"-20" range with a few of 22"-25". To the novice of our halibut outing: we are fishing the calm waters of Port San Luis Bay where there is little wave action and can be compared almost to a lake, with the exception around high tide when we have an increase in wave action most of the time. This is the opposite of surf fishing were we have constantly the surf movements. Halibut fishing is not a numbers game; it's more like a cat and mouse game. Having the correct line, leader, fly set-up combined with your---patience, concentration, and persistence, and some good fishing tips; can greatly improve your chances to succeed in your effort to catch a halibut. Besides halibut the smelt (like a trout) can also be present in the bay, and is a lot of fun to catch. However the more you focus on catching smelt the less chance you have of a halibut strike! The fishing can be done from shore to 1/2 hour before high tide with this tide of +3.8 ft. it is advisable to bring your pontoon so you can explore more fishing water. It is better to land your pontoon back to shore 1/2 hour before high tide or 1/2 hour after high tide, during this 1-hour the waves can be TURBULENT and can make your landing more DIFFICULT. I can help you with your fishing set-up and flies and get you started on the water. NEW CLASS OFFERING Introduction to Entomology for Fly Fishers - Rich Chubon Ever wondered why trout on a feeding frenzy ignore your offerings? Maybe you are just starting out or have been fishing for a year or two, but haven’t figured out how “to match the hatch”. Don’t know the difference between an emerger and a dun or more importantly why it matters. If you find yourself in any of these categories, maybe you should attend our class session on an Introduction to Entomology for Fly Fishers.

Our introductory class will provide you with a better awareness of the bugs that make up a trout’s diet. You will learn about their life cycle stages, including how each stage provide trout with distinct feeding opportunities. You will discover how to recognize those differences, as well as the fly patterns and tactics you should use to catch those feeding trout.

RECENT DONATIONS: KERN VALLEY SEARCH & RESCUE We received a request to help the Kern River Search and Rescue volunteers by donating a new set of waders and boots. These folks have been kept very busy this season. Got the following note from Kimberly Jeans: A BIG, BIG THANK YOU for donating to our KVSAR Team. So far, we have had 10 fatalities to date. Very dangerous at the moment. The good news is just over Memorial Day weekend, KVSAR was able to save 24 people. Hope all is going well with you, your family and SLFF. Take care! Announcing the SWCIFFF Riptide Rendezvous! Calling all fly anglers! On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the SWCIFFF will hold its first annual “Riptide Rendezvous”, a fly-fishing-only surf fishing contest. The event will be held at Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County There is no cost to enter the event, which will follow a format similar to Al Quattrocchi’s previous One Surf Fly events. Anglers are restricted to the use of just one fly during the allotted fishing time, and all fish will be measured, photographed, and released. In addition to awards for first, largest and most fish caught, there will be a great raffle of fly-fishing and outdoor gear, with all proceeds benefiting the Southwest Council, International Federation of Fly Fishers and their related outreach programs. Past surf fly fishing events have been a great place to see old friends, make new friends, and share a tale or two, on top of helping raise money for a worthy cause.
