Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that unfortunately is often not recognized by the person suffering from it. There are many treatments for snoring, but if the cause of the snoring is from a sleep apnea diagnosis, it needs to be treated differently than ordinary snoring.
Types Of Sleep Apnea
The three main types of sleep apnea are -1. Obstructive - which is the most common and occurs when
the soft tissue at the back of the throat relaxes and blocks airways.
2. Central -which is not common and occurs when the brain doesn’t signal the muscles that control breathing - snoring is not common for people with this type.
3. Complex -Complex sleep apnea is a combination of these two - obstructive and central - together.
How It Affects Your Life
It is not healthy for a productive lifestyle to go without enough sleep. The lack of proper sleep can cause:
➢Obesity
➢High blood pressure
➢Diabetes
➢Memory loss
➢Lack of concentration
➢Erectile dysfunction
Symptoms
There are ways to detect if a person has sleep apnea. The first sign is if they wake up in the morning feeling tired. Other symptoms are:
➢Snoring
➢Feeling sleepy during the day
➢Loss of libido
➢Inability to concentrate
Treatments
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is recommended for most people. This treatment involves a machine that helps the person breathe better while they are sleeping.
If the CPAP treatment is not useful, there are dental devices that are used as an alternative treatment. They help increase the flow of oxygen to the brain. These include:
➢Tap Appliance I and III
➢Somnolent
➢Herbst Appliance
Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea
There is sophisticated technology today to diagnose sleep apnea and help select the right treatment. Initial snoring tests can be taken and people can go to sleep test centers to help determine the type sleep apnea and get a more thorough diagnosis.
