who take part in our microloan program in the Rajahmundry Rock Quarry. She is 35 has has a one-year old son. He is tied onto her back as she breaks rock with a hand-held hammer. It is not a nice job, she says as she shows me her blistered palms. She has to keep going, hour after hour, in order to earn enough to eat. She shrugs her shoulders and says, “It’s the only way I know how to survive.” Like other women in the quarry, Vijay owes money to the quarry company store. At the exorbitant interest they charge, she will never be free of her debt.

Now for the first time a microloan has brought a little breathing room into her life. She is putting more food on her table each day and even saving a little. Because of God’s people, she says, I may be able to escape this life. She has begun to dare to think that her son will not have to be a stone crusher.

IN KOLKATA,

At our work among two communities on the far south end of Kolkota the houses consist of one-room brick shacks with tin rooftops that swelter in the heat. The paths between them are perennially muddy and full of trash and waste. There seem to be children on all sides in various stages of dress. Mudpaths ministry pulls kids off these paths and places them in VBS and educational tutoring classes. They hear about Christ, learn to pray and are exposed to a new way, a clean path, a new King.

because of her energy, fearlessness and infectious smile. For the last ten years she ministered in the Sonigattchi (red-light) district of Kolkata. Now she is leading teams and interns into pockets of deep poverty to make a difference.

The ministry is lead by Smriti Maity. We have nicknamed her

Heat. Poverty. A caste system that keeps people low.

In the midst of the struggle there are men like pastor

Sundaram who are willing to embrace the sacrifice

and suffering that the faithful must endure. Years ago

he moved to the village of Devipatnam and began to

witness his faith in Christ to the villagers. Over time

his congregation grew. Two years ago we erected a

church, one of six in the Deep Forest communities.

It is full of young mothers and smiling children.

Pastor Sundaram recently lost a grandchild to an

accident and his wife to breast cancer. He serves

his church all the more fervently.

Like the other pastors in our program, he eagerly

attends the training classes that are offered once

a month by our King of Kings leaders.

IN DONDO,

balancing her toddler on her legs as she explained how her first husband died and left her with five children. Another man took her as his second wife then abandoned her. But not before he left her with one more child. She now has AIDS and six young children in her care. She survives by growing sweet potatoes and rice. Her very small mud home is eroding away and will soon collapse in the rain.

Tina’s story is typical of the Dondo area. Our Ray of Light project helps her and hundreds of others in four ways.

• Green Door Housing for the poorest and neediest.

• Nutrition, medical care and food distribution.

• The El Shaddai Christian Academy & Little Seeds schools.

• Direct aid to widows and orphans through Project Life.

Each of these ministries needs help. Join us please, at our largest project for a meaningful experience of service to the poor.

UNWANTED CHILD IN

THE

KENYA NAIROBI,

Jean Cornell Christian Academy located just outside Nairobi. He has had a hard life as an unwanted child. When he first came to us he was timid and unresponsive. He was afraid of adults and most other kids. Getting a smile from him was like squeezing water out of a rock. He used to sit alone at recess.

But today Joseph loves to play soccer and is start-ing to read. He looks his teachers in the eye. He is known among the other kids for his kindness.

George Karanga, the founder of the Cornell Acad-emy, understands that knowledge is not enough for a child to do well. This is why the school’s mod-el is “Exalt to Excel.” Classes begin each morning with prayer and Bible teaching. They learn about God deeply, says George, and over time their lives are transformed.
