    Sungkyunkwan University is synonymous with

    both tradition and innovation in education. The

    literal meaning of the university's name is an

    institution for building a harmonious society of

    perfected human beings. The founding philosophy

    of the old Sungkyunkwan is needed as much as

    ever today, in an era of technological advancement

    that seems devoid of humanity.

    LanguageProficiencyRequirements

    Students, who are not native English speakers,

    and who wish to undertake courses at SKK

    University in the English language are expected to

    submit evidence of their English language

    proficiency with their application. Evidence can be in

    the form of either the TOEFL certificate or a letter of

    recommendation from the students supervising

    professor stating that the student is fluent in written

    and spoken English.

    The minimum TOEFL scores are as follows:

    Written TOEFL 550 and an essay score (TWE) of 4.0

    or better

    Computerized TOEFL 213 and an essay score

    (TWE) of 4.0 or better

    (Only exams taken in the last two years will be

    accepted.)Students who have completed studies in English for

    at least one full year of university level study are not

    required to submit evidence of English proficiency.

    The students transcript will suffice as proof.

    AdmissionRequirements

    To be admitted into the SKK University exchange

    program or study abroad programs, students

    must:

    Have completed at least one year of study at a

    recognized university and be continuing

    towards a degree at their home institution,

    Have a cumulative GPA minimum of 3.0 on a

    4.5 scale(average letter grade of B or above),

    Submit a letter of confirmation concerning the

    students competency in written and spoken

    Korean if the student wishes to pursue

    academic courses taught in Korean.

    In addition, postgraduate research students

    must include with their application:

    a letter of support from a SKK Universityacademic who has agreed to be their

    supervisor whilst the student is at SKK

    University for either one semester or one year,

    a 1-2 page research proposal.

    The following documentation will be sent to all

    admitted students prior to their arrival in Seoul

    unless their organization provides similar

    information.

    1) Acceptance Letter: confirms admission into

    Sungkyunkwan Universitys Study Abroad or

    Exchange Program

    2) Certificate of Admission: document required by

    the Department of Immigration in order to

    obtain a student visa to study in Korea

    Enrollment andCourse Load

    Students can enroll for a maximum of 18

    credit points per semester and a minimum

    of 9 credit points. Courses at SKK University

    usually carry a weight of 3 credit points per

    subject. One credit hour ordinarily represents

    one lecture hour a week. The list of courses

    taught in foreign languages can be found on our

    English website under the Academics section.

    Sungkyunkwan University will provide two

    copies of each student's official academic

    transcript free of charge.

    Students studying at the Humanities and Social

    Sciences Campus (HSSC) are able to obtain

    additional copies of their academic transcript

    from the Academic Affairs Office, or the

    Automated Transcript Machine located on the

    first floor of the 600th Anniversary Building and

    the Business Administration Building.

    Students studying at the Natural Sciences

    Campus (NSC) can as well visit the Academic

    Affairs Office or use the Automated Transcript

    Machine located on the first floor of the Student

    Union Building.

    OrientationProgram

    Sungkyunkwan University organizes a one day

    International Student Orientation Program

    for all exchange students. The orientation

    program includes information sessions, and the

    opportunity to meet other students attending SKK

    University as well as a library and campus tour.

    Orientation Day for the Spring Semester

    Meeting place: 600 th Anniversary Building,

    Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC).

    Please come to the International Relations &

    Education Center on the 2nd floor.

    RecommendedArrival Date

    Students are advised to arrive at least one

    week prior to the commencement of their

    classes. Of the students coming to the

    Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC),

    exchange students will be housed by our

    university but non-exchange students must find

    their own accommodation. It must be noted that

    private housing close to the Seoul HSSC campus

    is difficult to find just before the semester begins.

    Dormitory accommodation in the Natural Science

    campus (NSC) in Suwon is available for all

    international students.

    Please contact the international office

    ([email protected]) as well as HI-Club via e-mail

    ([email protected]) and notify the date of arrival

    and flight number as soon as possible.

    All students must make a visit to the

    Immigration Bureau within 90 days of their

    date of entry to Korea in order to apply for a

    Certificate of Alien Registration.

    Things to Bring with you

    1. Your Passport (which youll need to surrender

    for about 10 days)

    with you in the interim)

    3. At least 2 (if not 3) identical, pre-cut 3X4cm

    photos

    place. Leave any valuables at home.

    When you arrive at the Immigration Office

    1. At the information desk, turn right and prepare

    to enter the Residence Control room. Both in

    front of and inside this room, you will find

    glass-topped tables with forms under the

    glass. Take a copy of the Alien Registration

    Form and fill it out. The form is reasonably

    self-explanatory; if you get stuck, there are

    examples for you to follow under the glass. Besure to use the glue sticks available at the

    office to attach one of your photographs to the

    form.

    2. Once youve completed the form, get a number

    to wait in line. The machine to receive a

    number is inside the rom, to the left of the door

    as you enter.

    3. Collect your number and check the number

    boards over the appropriate window (s) to see

    how far you are from being served.

    H I (Help & Information) Club

    HI is an acronym for help and information. The

    HI-Club is designed to assist international

    students at Sungkyunkwan University. Made up of

    around 15 Korean undergraduate students, they

    co-host the Orientation Day every semester, the

    annual International Day as well as have HI-Day

    Tours 2 times every semester.

    Contact with the students involved in this club is

    the best way to adjust to your new environment at

    SKK University.

    From the airport

    Incoming students will be picked-up by 2 or 3 HI-Club members. Hi-Club will guide students to

    their individual dormitories around Sungkyunkwan

    University.

    4. Return to the lobby of the building. On your left,

    you will see a small office for purchasing your

    Revenue Stamp. Go to the window and present

    your completed Alien Registration Form. You

    will be asked for the appropriate fee (most

    likely 10, 000), for which you will receive a

    stamp.

    5. Return to the glass-topped tables and attach

    your revenue stamp to your completed

    application form; follow the model form under

    the glass.

    6. Now wait until your number shows up on the

    board.

    7. When your number is called, present your

    paperwork to the Immigration Officer.

    Assuming all goes well, you will receive areceipt, which will include a date for you to

    return to pick up your Alien Registration Card

    and your passport.

    Club students will show the students the

    different buildings and facilities around campus:

    cafeterias, snack bars, convenience stores, the

    library, the medical service center, computer

    rooms, the book store, the e+ Global Zone,

    theaters, seminar rooms, the photo studio, the

    travel agency, the hairdressers, gallery, fitness

    centers, student centers, etc.

    HSSC students are to note that there is a shuttle

    bus from Hye-hwa subway station (line no.4) to

    HSSC and back. Five stops are made; Hye-hwa

    subway station exit 1, Burger King (on the way to

    SKK University), SKK University main gate, 600th

    Anniversary Building, basketball court (in front of

    the new Law Building).Bus Fare: 300 won

    NSC students are to note that there is a shuttle

    If, for some reason, this is not the case,

    students are advised to take the airport

    limousine shuttle bus 602-1 coming to Daehakro

    (Hye-hwa: subway station line no.4). The

    Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC)

    is about 5 minutes walk from the bus destination.

    The Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) is about a 5

    minutes walk from the Sungkyunkwan University

    subway station line no.1. In this case, students

    must contact the International Relations and

    Education Center (HSSC) for dormitory

    information.

    School Tour

    Students will be first introduced to staff

    members of the International Relations andEducation Center (HSSC) and the Sungkyun

    Language Institute. Students will also be

    introduced to the administrative staff members of

    Course Registration

    Registration at our university is done online so

    students must register on the SKK University

    website. Since this service is only available on the

    Korean website, HI-club members will be of

    assistance.

    Bank Account

    Having a Korean bank account is convenient

    especially when you are paying your rent

    separately to the landlord. Woori Bank is the

    closest bank to Sungkyunkwan University. You

    will need your passport and address to make a

    bank account. The student ID card serves as a

    cash card when connected to your WooriBankaccount. HI-club students will be of assistance.

    NSC and back without any stops (30 minutes).

    There are also shuttle buses from Bun-dangand

    Ilsan.

    Student ID card

    To apply for the Student Identification Card

    students need their passport, and one photo

    (3X4cm). Reissuing a lost card (Student Affairs

    Division) will incur a 5,000 won fee. Your Student

    ID card can also be linked to your bank account

    at the Woori Bank located near the campuses.

    HI-Club members will be able to assist you with

    this process. As with most countries, you must

    present your passport to open an account inKorea.

    international student attending the Sungkyun

    Language Institute (SLI) will be paired up with a

    Korean student. The Korean students, who are

    specially selected by the SLI staff members, helpinternational students with university class work as

    well as Korean, introduce students to different

    aspects of Korean culture, and attend various

    events with the international students. More

    information can be obtained from the Sungkyun

    Language Institute (SLI) office on the 3rd floor of

    the Dasan Economics building (Tel: 82-2-760-1223).

    International Meeting

    This is a one day event held every 2 months by the

    Sungkyun Language Institute (SLI) for international

    students and Korean students. This event provides

    an opportunity for students of different nationalities

    to meet and integrate with each other. More

    information can be obtained from the Sungkyun

    Language Institute (SLI) office on the 3rd floor of

    the Dasan Economics building (Tel: 82-2-760-1223).

    Activities forInternational

    Students

    International Day

    First founded in 1999 and co-hosted by the

    International Relations and Education Center and

    HI-Club, the International Day is an annual eventwhich takes place in the autumn semester. Its aim is

    to cultivate mutual friendship with international

    students and international faculty members as well

    as to implant a sense of identity with SKK University.

    HI-Day Tour is a day event in which HI-Clubmembers take international students to a specific

    place in Seoul. In the past, HI-Day Tours have been

    held in various places such as Changdeokgung

    Palace, KyeongbokgungPalace, and Ichon (a place

    where students were allowed to make Korean

    Pottery). Students will be notified at the Orientation

    Day about specific dates, and fee information.

    Excluding Housing and meal costs, students should

    plan on having at least 350,000 won (approximately

    $350) per month for travel expenses, books, and other

    expenses.

    The one-way cost for traveling in Seoul by bus or subway

    is 900 won (2005). Students are recommended to use

    Health Insurance

    Fees: 33,530 won per month ($1 is approximately 1,000 won)

    (students must pay the 3 months fee at once)

    If students decide to take this policy, they are entitled

    to pay the insurance fees from the point of registering

    as an international resident at the immigration

    bureau. Even if the student learns about this

    insurance policy at a later date and wishes to sign up

    for it, the student must pay all fees from the date of

    registering as an international resident.
