ended life, and that was that. Some of them believed Jesus had risen from the dead, but they did not go the next step, believing the same would happen to his followers.

To Paul, it made no sense. He wrote to the Corinthians, “If Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead?” The resurrection meant everything to Paul. “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain.”

With the resurrection of Christ comes forgiveness of sins and the resurrection of the dead. It is our firm faith. And it’s why Easter is the biggest day of the year.

Paul Turner.

Our most important belief Easter is the most important day in the year. Not everyone feels it. A lot of people treat Christmas with more importance. Or Valentine’s Day, or Independence Day, for that matter. But Easter tops the Christian calendar.

The reason, of course, is the meaning of the resurrection. Our belief in life after death directs everything we do. We live not as citizens of this world, but as citizens of heaven. We go about our daily tasks, but with one eye fixed beyond the horizon to a world yet to come. We believe we are forgiven and that a new home awaits us.

In Paul’s day, some of the Corinthians were having a problem with this. They questioned the resurrection of the dead. They suspected that death

Alleluia. Rejoice and leap for joy; for surely your reward is great in heaven. Alleluia. Alleluia.

PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES . . .

to Donna, Dan, Lynne, Jeannine, Gerald, Reg, Betty, Noella, Loren, Vince and families on the death of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Lorraine Viczko;

also to Rita, Dale, Glenn, John, Mark, Daphne and families on the death of husband, father and grandfather Leo Meier.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in God’s peace.

WELCOME to all visiting with us this weekend. Your faith and spirit enrich our community. May you travel safely and know that God’s presence is always with you.

PARISH MISSION Holy Spirit Parish is offering a Parish Mission during Lent - March 24 to 27, 2019 - Sunday (8:00 pm-9:00 pm); Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 7:00 pm-8:15 pm. Facilitated by Father David Purcell CSsR; Deacon Bob Williston and Joan Williston.

The prophet Jeremiah minces no words in today's first reading: “Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings . . .

whose heart turns away from the LORD." And the prophets "beatitude" resembles that of Jesus' teaching in today's Gospel reading when he proclaims: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD.” Good stewards understand that what the world values is not consistent with Gospel values. They realize that God has placed in their midst all the gifts, charisms, and resources needed to bring Christ to a world desperately in need of his loving presence. But to exercise good stewardship over God's gifts takes a great deal of trust. How does our stewardship reflect our trust in the Lord? What did we do today to give others hope in Christ Jesus?

Culture of Encounter An ecumenical evening of study

with Louise Bitz of Holy Spirit Parish

Wednesday, February 27, 7:00 pm McClure United Church

4025 Taylor St E Join us for an evening of dialogue and reflection about building a culture of

encounter and sharing the journey in solidarity with forced migrants and refugees. The evening is facilitated by Louise Bitz, member of Holy Spirit Parish and Catholic Schools Program Officer with Development and Peace. “An encounter is not an exercise in power. Nor is it a demonstration of generosity through which we seek to ‘do good to’ the other. It demands real humility and deep vulnerability. To be present to the other, to listen to and regard him or her with respect and attention, allows us to receive in our turn.”

(Jean Vanier, Signs: Seven Words of Hope)

MINISTRY OF CARE In times of sickness, loneliness or sorrow, people often would like to have someone spend time with them – listening, caring and praying. Those who are homebound and unable to attend Mass may need someone from the parish to bring the Eucharist to them. Ministry of Care is available in Holy Spirit Parish and we will gladly make a home visit. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Call Charlene or Kelly at (306) 374-1425 if you or a member of your family would like to receive this ministry.

Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians Prayer Evening

Thursday, March 7 • 7:00 pm Holy Spirit Parish

In every age, Christians have suffered for their faith, from the Roman Coliseum to the recent beheadings perpetrated by ISIS. Brave men and women, embracing the cross of Jesus, have gone to their death rather than deny their faith. Today, the witness of martyrs continues in an especially intense way in the Middle East, where priests are murdered for offering Mass and families are driven from their homes for displaying a cross. Featuring the newly commissioned icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, we will gather as a church community to render spiritual aid to those who suffer for their faith. Please join the Knights and families in this special evening of prayer.

Reserve 107, winner of the Award of Merit for Shorts at the Speechless Film Festival in 2016.

Tuesday, February 26, 7:00 pm Holy Spirit Parish Hall

Reserve 107 is a short film which tells the story of a group of Mennonite and Lutheran settlers north of Saskatoon who had been given land although the land was already allocated as reserve land for the Young Chippewayan Band. Join us to learn how these three people groups banded together to overcome injustice and what influence does this have on us today. Myron Rogal of the Diocesan Office of Justice and Peace will be present to introduce the film and facilitate a short discussion time following the film. This film is appropriate for all ages. For more information or to register please call Sharon at 306-374-1425 or email to [email protected].

(ICM) INTEGRATED COMMUNITY MINISTRY LUNCH

Holy Spirit Parish, in covenant with McClure United Church, supports an organization called Integrated Community Ministry. This organization provides lunches for people in need every Wednesday. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve on one Wednesday in March. The commitment is from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on one of the following days: March 6, 13, 20, 27. The Saskatchewan Call for Conscience 2019 Campaign is underway. Christians across the province are being asked to review and sign a letter to the Minister of Health addressing our need for legislation to protect healthcare professionals from having to participate in Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) - ending their patient’s life. We hope to see 14,000 people participate in writing the Minister of Health by the end of February 2019. Please take a moment to review and sign the pre-scripted letter to the Minister of Health at the back of the church on February 23rd and February 24th. Thank you for living a faith that acts!

ALL GOOD COMES FROM GOD - Pat Mccloskey, OFM Whatever is good, true, or beautiful comes from a single source: God. The generousity and faithful love that God showed in creation can become a constant reminder of our need to live out a generous and faithful love. Our ability to do that grows as we grow. Create a moment today to thank God for Jesus's Incarnation and be ready for that to change your life.

TO THE PARENTS OF OUR YOUNG

CHILDREN, MAY WE SUGGEST . . .

☺ Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don't feel

you have to suppress it in God's house. All are

welcome!

☺ Sit toward the front where it is easier for your

little ones to see and hear what's going on at the

altar. They tire of seeing the backs of other's

heads.

☺ Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and

actions of the priest, altar servers, choir etc.

☺ Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses.

Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying

you.

☺ If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel

free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus

said "Let the children come to me."

☺ Remember that the way we welcome children in

church directly affects the way they respond to

the church, to God, and to one another. Let them

know that they are at home in this house of

worship.

TO OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH

The presence of children is a gift to the church and

they are a reminder that our parish is growing.

Please welcome our children and give a smile of

encouragement to their parents. If you see a parent

struggling, please offer to help them!

THE YIN AND YANG OF HOLY LIVING JEREMIAH 17:5-8

Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD. When I pray on Sunday mornings, I try to give God a sabbath from all of my usual asking and pleading. Instead, I resolved years ago that on Sundays, I'd limit my prayers to praise and thanksgiving. After all, Eucharist means thanksgiving. And besides, God gets an earful of what I want and need from

Monday through Saturday.

Each Sunday has become an opportunity to count my blessings. I'm regularly surprised how hard this

is-not that I haven't been blessed. I've got a terrific family, loyal friends, work I love, and enough money to cover the bills. I like my apartment, my pastor's a neat guy, my health is good, and on many days, the sun is shining. So why don't my Sunday prayers last as long as my other ones?

We don't count blessings as often as we tabulate the curses of living. While I manage to compose a paragraph of thank-yous weekly, every day I produce mountains of laments, complaints, and

demands. Maybe if I didn't spend only one day a week listing blessings, I'd be better at it.

» How much of your prayer is that of petition, and how much is devoted to praise or thanks?

Blessed are those who realise that they cannot live on bread alone

but need the word of God too - they will be fully nourished.

Blessed are those who remember that the things which corrupt us

are not those which enter us but those which come out of us, and

who strive after purity of heart - they will be clean all over.

Blessed are those who, when they have sinned, follow the example

of the prodigal son, and come back home to seek reconciliation -

they will cause heaven to ring with joy.

Blessed are those who stop to bind up the wounds of today's roadside

wounded, pouring in the oil of compassion and the wine of

hope - they are the Good Samaritans of today.

Blessed are those generous doers who, in the midst of all their work,

maintain a place in their lives for prayer, reflection, and

relaxation - they will not suffer bum-out.

Blessed are those who remove the plank from their own eyes before

telling their brother to remove the splinter from his - their efforts

at reforming others will bear fruit.

Blessed are those who, having put their hand to the plough, refuse to

look back - they will be found worthy of the kingdom.

Blessed are those disciples who remember that they are the branches

without which the vine cannot bear fruit - through their

good works the Vine will bear the grapes of love.
