Mass in a Time of Crisis

The propers of the Mass will be chanted rather than set to hymns. Everything will be unaccompanied. The Ordinary will be sung to Merbecke, and we end with the Salve Regina as usual.

The bishops of England & Wales strongly discourage congregational singing at the moment. If you do join in, please sing quietly!

You have handled this leaflet. You take it away with you or leave it in the box by the exit door. D .

You are welcome to leave an offertory gift in the plate on the way out. We can also offer contactless card facilities, or you can donate via our website. We use PayPal to process

payments, but you don’t need an account with them. We’re not using the “Standing Order” cards at the moment: if you have a standing order, thank you for your support.

Receiving Communion

After acknowledging the Body of Christ (“Lord, I am not worthy...”) communion is distributed in silence, without any response, in order to minimise face-to-face speech at close quarters. When you queue, please stay socially distant. If you wish to receive on the tongue you must kneel: if you cannot kneel, please receive in the hand. Communion is distributed in one kind.

The end of Mass

Unfortunately, socialising after Mass is another casualty of the pandemic.

Introductory RitesAfter the entrance of the ministers, kneel with them while the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar are said. These are not congregational, but you are welcome to follow the text.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I will go unto the altar of God.Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people; O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou put me from thee? and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me, and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling. And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness; and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God.

Why art thou so heavy, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?O put thy trust in God; for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

I will go unto the altar of God.Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

Confession

Our help is in the Name of the Lord.Who hath made heaven and earth.

I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, to Blessed Michael the Archangel, to Blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, brethren, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed; by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. Wherefore I beg Blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

Blessed Michael the Archangel, Blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brethren, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May Almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life.

Amen.

I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, to Blessed Michael the Archangel, to Blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to thee, Father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed;

Striking the breast three times

by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. Wherefore I beg Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, Blessed Michael the Archangel, Blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Angels and Saints, and thee, Father, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life.

Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord grant unto us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins. Amen.

Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, O God? That thy people may rejoice in thee.

O Lord, show thy mercy upon us.And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, hear my prayer. And let my cry come unto thee.

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Introit: Dominus fortitudo, Ps 28:8, 9, 1

The Lord is the strength of his people, and a stronghold of salvation to his Anointed One: O Lord, save thine own people, and give thy blessing unto thine inheritance; O feed them also, and set them up for ever.

Unto thee will I cry, O Lord; my God, be not silent unto me: lest, if thou make as though thou hearest not, I become like them that go down into the pit.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord is the strength of his people, and a stronghold of salvation to his Anointed One: O Lord, save thine own people, and give thy blessing unto thine inheritance; O feed them also, and set them up for ever.

Collect

The priest prays the Collect, the Prayer of the Day.

O God, who hast prepared for them that love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding: pour into our hearts such love toward thee; that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the WordSit for the readings

A reading from the book of Wisdom 12:13, 16–19

There is no god besides you, whose care is for all men, to whom you should prove that you have not judged unjustly; for your strength is the source of righteousness, and your sovereignty over all causes you to spare all. For you show your strength when men doubt the completeness of your power, and rebuke any insolence among those who know it. You who are sovereign in strength judge with mildness, and with great forbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose. Through such works you have taught your people that the righteous man must be kind, and you have filled your sons with good hope, because you give repentance for sins.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual: Convertere, Ps 90:13, 1

Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servants.

Lord, thou hast been our refuge: from one generation to another.

Second Reading

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans 8:26–27

Brethren: The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought,

Page 4: Sixth Sunday after Trinity · 2020-07-19 · A community in Christ, seeking and sharing transforming grace, reconciling love and compassionate hope Sixth Sunday after Trinity 19 July

but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia In te, Domine, speravi, Ps 31:1, 2

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust, let me never be put to confusion: deliver me in thy righteousness; bow down thine ear to me, make haste to deliver me.

Alleluia.

The Gospel

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. 13:24–43

Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time: Jesus put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.

“And the servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then has it weeds?’

“He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’“The servants said to him, ‘Then do you

want us to go and gather them?’“But he said, ‘No; lest in gathering the

weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”

Another parable he put before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

All this Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed he said nothing to them without a parable. This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.”

He answered, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the world, and the good seed means the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise be to thee, O Christ.

A homily follows.

The Creed

All stand to say the Nicene Creed.

I believe in one God,the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,begotten of his Father before all worlds,God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father;by whom all things were made;who for us men and for our salvationcame down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,

and was made man;

Stand

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered and was buried;and the third day he rose again

according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;and he shall come again with glory,to judge both the quick and the dead;whose kingdom shall have no end.And I believe in the Holy Ghost

the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;who with the Father and the Son together

is worshipped and glorified;who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic

and Apostolic Church;I acknowledge one Baptism

for the remission of sins;and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Kneel for the Prayers of the People, if they are included.

Lord, in thy mercy: hear our prayer.

Penitential Rite

Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail

our manifold sins and wickedness,

which we from time to time most grievously have committed,

by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty,

provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us.

We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry

for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them

is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The priest pronounces God’s merciful forgiveness.

May Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

The Offertory

The offertory antiphon is sung and the altar and offerings are prepared.

Perfice gressus meos, Ps 17:5, 6b, 7

O hold thou up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not; incline thine ear unto me, and hearken unto my words: show thy marvel-lous loving-kindness, O Lord; thou that art the Saviour of them that put their trust in thee.

Stand

Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Page 6: Sixth Sunday after Trinity · 2020-07-19 · A community in Christ, seeking and sharing transforming grace, reconciling love and compassionate hope Sixth Sunday after Trinity 19 July

The prayer over the offerings is said.

We beseech thee, O Lord, to have compassion on our prayers: and graciously to accept the oblations of thy servants and handmaids; that those things which each hath offered to the honour of thy Name may be profitable unto all for their salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you.And with thy spirit.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty …... evermore praising thee and saying,

Holy, holy holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All kneel while the priest continues with the Eucharistic prayer

The mystery of faith:

We proclaim thy Death, O Lord, and profess thy Resurrection until thou come again.

... By whom and with whom and in whom, to thee, O Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Communion Rite

As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespassesas we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee ...we may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace

O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, ... world without end. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.And with thy spirit.

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

All pray the Prayer of Humble Access

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy

so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table.

But thou art the same Lordwhose property is always to have mercy.Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christand to drink his Blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean

by his Bodyand our souls washed

through his most precious Blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Page 7: Sixth Sunday after Trinity · 2020-07-19 · A community in Christ, seeking and sharing transforming grace, reconciling love and compassionate hope Sixth Sunday after Trinity 19 July

The response is said three times.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

The Communion

The priest receives communion before distributing the sacrament to the faithful.

Communion is received in silence. Please observe social distancing. If you wish to receive communion on the tongue, you must kneel and you should allow others to receive before you. If you cannot kneel, receive in the hand.

The communion antiphon is sung. Circuibo, Ps 27:7

Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness: I will sing, and speak praises unto the Lord.

After communion

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee

for that thou dost feed us,in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food

of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;

and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us;

and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son,

the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of the most precious death

and Passion of thy dear Son. And we humbly beseech thee,

O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works

as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Priest prays the post-communion prayer

O Lord, who hast satisfied us with thy heavenly bounties: grant that we may be cleansed from all our secret faults, and delivered from all the crafts and assaults of our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Concluding RiteThe priest says the blessing.

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Go forth in peace. Thanks be to God.

Anthem to Our Lady

The ministers process to the Image of Our Lady of Walsingham

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,That we may be made worthy

of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Almighty, everlasting God, who by the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a worthy dwelling-place for thy Son; grant that we who rejoice in her commemoration may, by her loving intercession, be delivered from present evils and from eternal death. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Take this leaflet away with you or leave it in the box by the exit door. We cannot use it again.
