During the most recent Ofsted inspection our Curriculum was described as the jewel in the crown of the school, we hope that you will be similarly impressed by the vast variety of choices that we offer. We pride ourselves on the breadth of opportunities that are available to our Sixth Form students.

When selecting your courses, first identify the likely pathway below which best suits your current profile of achievement. You will be able to find a wide range of suitable courses at whatever level you wish to progress onto and in whatever field you aspire to study and eventually to work.

Entry to our Sixth Form is based on meeting the individual grade requirements for the courses you

wish to study and is dependent on you selecting a programme that allows for progression and that suits your profile of achievement.

Read through the course information and then turn to the back of this booklet to locate your chosen courses in the option blocks. You can then apply via the Kent Choices website or directly to the school. You will be expected to study GCSEs in English or Maths or both if you have not yet achieved a C Grade in each course.

Courses are selected according to a system of four Option Blocks from each of which you can choose one course. In this way you can choose any four courses for which you are qualified. Another way of choosing is by selecting from one of the Learning Pathways outlined below. By choosing a pathway or recommended group of courses, you will be able to develop the skills and expertise required to aid progression into a number of future careers or further studies.

If you wish to select your courses by this means you will be able to choose three or four A Levels or Level 3 courses from across the pathway and will thereby have a coherent programme tailored specifically to your interests.

These pathways have been specifically identified to help you to build a strong skills base and to offer you the chance to prepare for specified industries. These grouped programmes have been drawn together with consideration of university requirements, employer needs and industry guidance so that you will leave Homewood with the qualifications and expertise to pursue either a profession or higher education in the field of your choice.

This model works in the context of the current academic year’s option blocks and whilst we cannot guarantee that all options will be available in the stipulated blocks, we do anticipate that changes will be minimal. Please note that these pathways have been popular areas for Homewood students over a number of years and have been identified to reflect these trends.

If you wish to choose one of these pathways, please talk with the Principal Teachers of the departments providing the courses for more specific guidance about how to shape your programme.

ACTINGLevel: BTEC Level 3 COURSE LENGTH: 2 years CONTACT: Mrs V Fannon

The BTEC Acting course is a vocational qualification aimed at students who learn well through project application and professional practice. The course covers a variety of acting styles and techniques and has the flexibility to be tailored to each group.

The course is evenly balanced between practical work and academic study. It should be noted that the course requires good organisation skills, with note taking and good presentation techniques being an essential requirement. Assessment is through practical performance and reflective ongoing portfolio. Students benefit from regular trips to the theatre, workshops or talks from visiting professionals such as Stephen Berkoff.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including English and C in Drama or similar subject area.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this course to complement other Level 3 and Advanced Level courses that may be related to the performing arts, which could lead onto Higher Education within the arts or more general Higher Education courses.

With further training, you could go into employment related to the performing arts such as working in the Film, Television or Theatre Industries. You may also like to look at joining a theatre group to increase your drama and theatre experience.

The course offers a distinct subject content which provides you with the skills, understanding and knowledge that employers from many industries, particularly with a personnel management dimension, are looking for.

ANIMAL MANAGEMENTLevel: BTEC Level 3 COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr D Shepherd

This BTEC covers a wide range of topics about animal management in depth. The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress either into higher education or into jobs in the animal sector.

All five units in this course are mandatory, and they cover Animal Welfare and Ethics, Practical Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour, Animal Health and Diseases and Work Experience in the Animal Sector. There will be a large amount of practical work using the animals on the farm, and the farm staff will be involved with delivering parts of the course. Other farm specialists from the work sector will also be involved in the delivery of specific parts of the course. 67% of the course is assessed by internal coursework assessments, and the other 33% is assessed by an external exam.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this qualification further by completing further units as an extended diploma or higher qualification at an agricultural college. You could also use the qualification to gain UCAS points (equivalent to one A level) to go on to a degree in a biology or animal related subject at university. The BTEC qualification also supports learners who want to go straight on to pursue a career in an animal-related industry. You could also go on to an apprenticeship in the animal sector, for example at a farm or a zoo.

ART (FINE ART)Level: GCSE COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Miss J Rickard

You will study a range of artists, use a variety of art materials and develop ideas creatively. Projects will include references to first hand sources and by the end of the project you will have brought all your ideas together creatively. Work is mounted up and annotated to explain all your ideas. Basic art materials will be required for you to use at home. You will complete a minimum of two coursework units, and then the final art exam is a practical project which you have a few weeks to prepare for, and then create the final piece/s under exam conditions in the Art room for ten hours.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses. This course would also work well being studied alongside Graphics, Photography, Textiles or Ceramics.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:Everything you wear or see has had a designer or artist involved somewhere. Many of the people who have created this have gone through an Art and Design route in Further Education and Higher Education such as Graphic Designer, Exhibition Designer, Fine Artist or Teacher.

ART (FINE ART) Level: AS and A Level* COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Miss J Rickard

AS: You will cover a full range of art techniques using a variety of materials and developing your ideas creatively. You will learn through the investigation of artists and as a result you will develop an individual approach and style to art. Extensive research using a wide range of techniques will be used at all times in the course. Final art pieces are produced on an individual basis. Developmental work is a critical part of this course and the ability to annotate the progressive stages of the work will be essential. The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece(s) created in ten hours under exam conditions. A2: The second year of the course is a natural progression into a detailed body of coursework that continues to link to art in context, exploration of materials and techniques and development of your own creative ideas. A personal investigation (1000 to 3000 words) will allow for an in depth study into the contextualisation of your project. The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece(s) created in 15 hours under exam conditions. This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level under the new regulations you will need to take all of the assessed units together at the end of the second year of the course, including a repeat of those taken at the end of Year 12.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: AS Level: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including a C in an Art subject. A2 Level: Pass grade (A - E) at AS Level Fine Art. This course would also work well being studied alongside Graphics, Photography, Textiles or Ceramics.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses such as Graphics, Photography, Textiles, Ceramics or Product Design - or to prepare for the A2 part of Fine Art. This could lead onto Higher Education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general Higher Education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior Designer, Artist or Fashion Designer. You could also go straight into a job, as these courses are recognised qualifications that will encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. *The A2 course will only run subject to there being sufficient numbers at GCSE and AS Level and available option blocks.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course will give you the opportunity to go on to college or industry to continue your training as a beauty therapist or to start your own business or apply to work in the beauty industry.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No prior beauty courses necessary but a basic level of English and Maths is required.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course is ideal for students with an interest in the beauty industry wishing to progress either as an apprentice or on to the Level 3 massage course within school or at college.

BIOLOGYLevel: A Level COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr D Shepherd/Mrs R Holness

This course is designed to encourage students to develop an enthusiasm for biology, including practical skills, an understanding of concepts and principles, and the knowledge and skills for the study of biology in Higher Education.

At AS level student will cover topics such as basic cell structure, biological molecules and cell division, diversity and organisation. You will also cover ideas on how organisms exchange substances with their environments as well as looking at biodiversity and variation and relationships between organisms. At the end of the first year you will sit two written papers on these topics allowing you to attain an AS in Biology. At this point you may end the course with a recognised AS in Biology.

In the A Level course students will cover all the above topics in the first year and then will continue into a second year and cover topics such as how organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments, the control of gene expression. They will also look at patterns of inheritance and how the genome can be manipulated as well as genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems. At the end of two year course students will sit 3 written examinations, covering topics from both years of the course. Students will also have a practical endorsement which will be reported separately and comments on their practical skills. It should also be noted their scores awarded for exams in the AS portion of the course DO NOT count towards the A Level grade.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:AS Level: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including a C in English, a B in Maths and a B in GCSE Biology or Additional Science.A- Level: A pass grade (A - E) at AS level.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this course with other Advanced Level courses, which overlap with Biology such as Chemistry, or more general subjects, to prepare for Higher Education.With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or Human Biology such as a Doctor, Nurse, Science Technician or Marine Biologist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.

After completing the AS part of the course you could also go straight into a workplace with a recognised qualification that has helped you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that are sought by employers.

APPLIED SCIENCE (Biology Emphasis)Level: BTEC COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr D Shepherd/Mrs R Holness

This BTEC covers a wide range of science topics in depth. The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.

The course covers four units, of which three are mandatory. These are Principles and Applications of Science, Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques and Science Investigation Skills. The fourth unit will be a biology specific unit. The content covered in the mandatory units is similar to that of A Level biology, chemistry and physics, covering a wide range of topics. As a result approximately 50% of this course is on physics and chemistry content. Two units are assessed by external examinations, and the remaining two are assessed by teacher assessed assignments. This is a vocational course, and the focus is split equally between learning content and carrying out practical tasks. The BTEC course gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment in the science sector.

In the final unit of this course, biology specific content such as the physiology of human body systems will be covered, and it will be assessed by traditional BTEC assignments which are assessed by teachers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above, including any two sciences.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses that may overlap with Biology such as Sports Science or Child Development. This course supports progression onto some Higher Education courses in science related subjects or more general Higher Education courses.

Many students who study through the BTEC route consider a career in research science, or as technicians in industry. However, with the relevant work experience candidates could progress onto careers in management, teaching or higher level research.

Other possible career paths could include food manufacturing, environment and conservation and animal health and breeding.

BUSINESS Level: GCSE COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Mr D Bailey

You will find out how to think like an economist and learn how the economy functions, the government’s role in the economy and its impact on business. You will also examine what causes businesses to fail and how businesses grow. You will study many issues within the world of business such as inequality.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Small Business (assessed by multiple choice exam) – 25%Unit 2 – Introduction to Small Business (assessed by Controlled Assessment) – 25%Unit 3 – Building a Business (assessed by written exam) – 50%

Examination Controlled Assessment Examination You will take a written examination paper with multiple choice and objective test questions based on the unit.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses. The intense nature of this course requires commitment, good attendance and self-motivation.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course is intended for students wishing to progress onto GCE AS or A2 Level Business Studies.

BUSINESS

Level: AS and A Level COURSE LENGTH: 1 to 2 years CONTACT: Mrs V Stokes

The A Level is structured into four themes: · Theme 1 Marketing and people · Theme 2 Managing business activities · Theme 3 Business decisions and strategy · Theme 4 Global business.

There are three externally assessed papers at A Level. Each paper comprises 100 marks and is two hours in duration. Data response questions are short answer and extended open response.

A Level Paper 3 has a broad pre-released context to support the investigative nature of the qualification. The AS Level is embedded in the A Level: themes 1 and 2 are the same for both the AS and A Level specifications.

There are two externally assessed papers at AS Level. Each paper comprises 80 marks and is 1.5 hours in duration. Data response questions are short answer and extended open response. This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level under the new regulations you will need to take all of the assessed units together at the end of the second year of the course, including a repeat of those taken at the end of Year 12.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: GCSE Business at a minimum of a Grade B and an additional 4 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including English and Maths.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course will prepare you for higher education; it offers a qualification for employment or further learning in business related sectors. The course covers all aspects of business and with further training you may wish to specialise and study a professional qualification in your chosen career.

BUSINESS Level: Level 3 BTEC National 2016 COURSE LENGTH: 1 to 3 years CONTACT: Mrs K Farrell

This course is available as a: · Level 3 Certificate - 180 credits – Equivalent to AS. · Level 3 Extended Certificate - 360 credits – Equivalent to 1 A Level. · Level 3 Foundation Diploma - 540 credits – Equivalent to 1 ½ A Levels · Level 3 Diploma –720 credits - Equivalent to 2 A Levels. · Level 3 Extended Diploma - 1080 credits – Equivalent to 3 A Levels.

As a single option in Year 1, you will complete 2 units for the Certificate:· Unit 1 – Exploring Business (Assessed via coursework) 90 credits· Unit 2 – Developing a Marketing Campaign (Assessed via controlled conditions) 90 credits

As a double option in Year 1, in addition to the above you will complete 2 more units for the Extended Certificate:Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance (Assessed via exam) 120 creditsUnit 8 – Recruitment and selection (assessed via coursework) 60 credits

To achieve higher levels of this qualification series i.e. Foundation Diploma and above you complete up to 3 Controlled Conditions units are more optional coursework units.

NOTE: • This is NOT the same course that has been delivered in the past.• Details of this option are subject to change upon further information yet to be released by the exam board.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including English and Maths. Successful completion of a Level 2 Business course would be beneficial but not essential.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course offers a qualification for employment or further learning in business related sectors. You could take it with other qualifications, such as an Applied GCE to complement your qualification and prepare for Higher Education. The course covers all aspects of business and with further training you may wish to specialise and study a professional qualification in your chosen area such as Marketing, Retail or Customer Service. The course provides a work related programme of study so you could go straight into a job as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for.

CATERING (HOSPITALITY) Level: Level 3 BTEC COURSE LENGTH: 2 years CONTACT: Mr S Crowder

You look at many aspects of the Catering and hospitality industry. Start by looking at the industry as a whole and then moving on to customer service both delivering good service and the management of staff. You will also look at areas around the world, comparing food styles and preparing a range of both domestic and international dishes. In you final year you will plan and run a large event for the school/department including staffing, pricing and all the aspects of an event.

With the hospitality industry being the second largest employer in the country; the choices are many. Also gives you the chance to look at overseas work, with large chains or smaller businesses.

CATERING & HOSPITALITY Level: Level 2 BTEC COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Mr S Crowder

You will look at the industry as a whole with all the different sorts of outlets available. You will look at the jobs that are available and the work skills needed to succeed in the industry. You will look at basic Food Hygiene and Health and Safety. You will also cook a range of dishes over the year. In one unit you will plan, cook and review a nutritious 2 course meal.

CERAMICS (3D Design) Level: GCSE COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Miss C Wood

You will study a range of 3D artists, use a variety of 3D art materials and develop ideas creatively. Projects will include references to first hand sources and by the end of the project you will have brought all your ideas together. Work is mounted up or presented in a sketchbook, and annotated to explain all your ideas. Basic art materials will be required for you to use at home. You will complete a large coursework unit, and then the final exam is a practical project which you have a few weeks to prepare for, to create the final piece(s) under exam conditions for ten hours.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses. This course would also work well being studied alongside Graphics, Photography, Textiles or Fine Art.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:Everything you wear or see has had a designer or artist involved somewhere. CERAMICS (3D Design) Level: AS and A Level* COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Miss C Wood Ceramics offers an excellent opportunity for the expression of personal, creative ideas and the development of skills and techniques required for their realisation. Ceramics encourages flexibility of thought response and engenders the development of analytical and aesthetic judgement. It allows for personal expression, teaches self-discipline and provides an opportunity for a healthy alignment between intellectual and feeling processes, encouraging the development of personal value, confidence and self-esteem.

AS: You will explore art techniques using a range of materials and developing three dimensional work. A developmental sketchbook is a critical part of this course and the ability to annotate the progressive stages of the work will be essential. Through the investigation of artists, you will develop an individual approach and style to art. Extensive research using a wide range of techniques will be used at all times in the course. The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece(s) created in 10 hours under exam conditions.

A2: The second year of the course is a natural progression into a detailed body of coursework that continues to link to art in context, exploration of materials and techniques, and development of your own creative ideas. A personal investigation (1000 to 3000 words) will allow for an in depth study into the contextualisation of your project. The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece(s) created in 15 hours under exam conditions. This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. This course is designed to encourage students to develop an enthusiasm for chemistry, including practical skills, an understanding of concepts and principles, and the knowledge and skills for the study of biology in Higher Education.

At AS level student will cover 5 different storylines which will include Elements of Life, Developing Fuels, Elements from the Sea, The Ozone Story and What’s in a Medicine. At the end of the first year you will sit two written papers on these topics allowing you to attain an AS in Chemistry. At this point you may end the course with a recognised AS in Chemistry.

In the A Level course students will cover all the above topics in the first year and then will continue into a second year and cover storyline which include The Chemical Industry, Polymers and Life, Oceans, Developing Metals and Colour by Design. At the end of two year course students will sit 3 written examinations, covering topics from both years of the course. Students will also have a practical endorsement which will be reported separately and comments on their practical skills. It should also be noted their scores awarded for exams in the AS portion of the course DO NOT count towards the A Level grade.

APPLIED SCIENCE (Chemistry Emphasis) Level: BTEC COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr D Shepherd

This BTEC covers a wide range of science topics in depth. The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.

The course covers four units, of which three are mandatory. These are Principles and Applications of Science, Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques and Science Investigation Skills. The fourth unit will be a chemistry specific unit. The content covered in the mandatory units is similar to that of A Level biology, chemistry and physics, covering a wide range of topics. As a result approximately 50% of this course is on physics and chemistry content. Two units are assessed by external examinations, and the remaining two are assessed by teacher assessed assignments. This is a vocational course, and the focus is split equally between learning content and carrying out practical tasks. The BTEC course gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment in the science sector.

In the final unit of this course, chemistry specific content such as the applications of organic chemistry will be covered, and it will be assessed by traditional BTEC assignments which are assessed by teachers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above, including any two sciences.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses that may overlap with Chemistry/Physics. This course supports progression onto some Higher Education courses in science related subjects or more general Higher Education courses.

This qualification provides you with the opportunity to gain a vocational qualification. This course looks at the broad basis of the early year’s sector and will include the knowledge and understanding of child development and will prepare you for working with children in a variety of sectors. You will study the development and well-being of children, which will include their physical, intellectual, emotional, social and behavioural development. You will also learn about children’s activities, daily routines and the support children need in their everyday lives.

This course requires you to sit one multiple choice paper and complete two pieces of coursework throughout the year.

This course looks at the broad basis of study of the early year’s sector. This suits learners who are interested in working with children. All students will be required to carry out a minimum of 50 hours work placement in at least one setting over the two years. This placement has to be a setting with children from birth to eight years. The structure of this course requires you to complete one written exam, one practical based exam and two pieces of coursework. You will study the development of children’s communication, literacy and numeracy skills. You will also learn about the benefits of play, the influence of theories and approaches to play. Finally, you will look at the physical care and health needs of children, develop skills to support their needs and learn how to recognise ill health.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including a minimum of grade C (or Pass) in Child Development.

You will work collectively and individually on projects. The units are delivered through a variety of methods mostly in the studio/theatre and occasionally in a classroom. There will be frequent discussions/debates and you will be expected to contribute to community workshops and regular performances. You will be assessed both internally by your teachers and externally by examiners from Pearson.

The National Certificate has 2 compulsory units:

AS Examinations Component 1: Performance and ChoreographyYou will be assessed in the choreography and performance of a solo that you have created from a stimulus set by the exam board. You will also perform a trio or duet that will be created by you and your teacher. This element is purely practical and is worth 50% of the AS course.

Component 2: Critical EngagementYou will be assessed in a 2 hour exam which comprises of short answer questions about your own practice, short answer questions about a compulsory area of study and two essay questions based on both areas of study. This is a theoretical element that is worth 50% of the AS course.

A Level Examinations Component 1: Choreography and Performance You will be assessed in the performance of solo inspired by a practitioner from one of your chosen areas of study and a quartet. These will be created by you and your teacher. You also have to choreograph a group dance that responds to a stimulus set by the exam board. This is a practical exam and worth 50% of the A level course.

Component 2: Critical EngagementThis is a theoretical element worth 50% of the A level course in which you will sit a 2 and a half hour exam. You will answer short and essay style questions based on a set work prescribed by the exam board. You will also have to write essay questions on another set work of your teacher’s choice from your areas of study.This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. The Extended Project is suitable for students who are independent and self-motivated learners, as this course requires them to direct and manage their own project and deadlines. It is essential that the students have a passion for the topic that they decide to base their project around.

This course can take the form of a variety of different final pieces; students may produce an artefact, dissertation, investigation or performance. Level: GCSE COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Mr M Davies Graphic Design is the art of communicating information visually through the use of words and images (text and illustration). The course aims to develop your creative thinking skills and practical abilities. You will be introduced to the work of contemporary designers / illustrators and encouraged to experiment with a range of different techniques, processes, media and materials. Digital Media is an important element of the course alongside more traditional hand rendered techniques. You will complete a minimum of two coursework units, and then the final Graphics exam is a practical project which you have a few weeks to prepare for, and then create the final piece(s) in 10 hours.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses. This course would also work well being studied alongside Photography, Textiles, Ceramics or Fine Art.

A2: The A2 year is a natural progression from the AS Graphics course, with continued development of creative ideas. A wide range of Graphics materials and techniques will be developed further, as a result of the creation of a personal investigation (1000 to 3000 words), which will allow for an in depth study into the contextualisation of your project. The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece/s created in 15 hours under exam conditions.

In Unit 1 you will learn about the leisure and tourism industry. You will explore the different types of leisure and tourism organisations in the UK, gain an understanding of the various employment opportunities available, be introduced to the business operations side of the industry and examine the impact that tourism has on communities and environments. In Unit 2 you will learn about sales, marketing and technology in the leisure and tourism industry.

Both units are assessed as 60% coursework and 40% examination. You will be able to complete two units in a year. This means that all the assessment is based on work you’ve carried out recently.

Students taking AS will study the core 1 and core 2 aspects of A Level Mathematics alongside Statistics 1. These incorporate material such as algebra, functions, quadratics and quadratic simultaneous equations as well as co-ordinate geometry (y=mx+c equations), sequences and series, differentiation and integration. Core 2 builds on Core 1 by introducing the student to aspects to include dividing polynomials, exponentials and logarithms, further co-ordinate geometry, binomial investigations, radians, geometric series and trigonometric identities. Examinations are all in June and the average of the three modules will determine the final grade.

To move onto A2 Level you will have obtained pass grades in S1, C1 and C2. There are three further modules Core 3, Core 4 and Decision Mathematics 1.

Core 3 introduces you to harder algebraic fractions and the ability to work with range and domain of graphs. Numerical methods will expand your understanding of solving equations using a former trial and improvement method from GCSE, and you will revisit transformations of functions from GCSE to now include the modulus function. Trig will introduce new functions of sec, cosec and cot and new identities there-on. You will become competent at the chain, product and quotient rules of differentiation. Core 4 introduces, inter-alia, partial fractions, parametric equations, binomial expansions, further differentiation and integration to include by parts and substitution and vector notation. Decision 1 is most recent of additions to Mathematics, studying algorithms, graphs and networks, route inspection, critical path analysis, linear programming and matching. It is arguably the branches of mathematics most used in the workplace.

In the first year of studies, you will study Further Pure Mathematics 1 alongside Mechanics 1 and Statistics 2. In Statistics 2 you will be introduced to statistical binomial distributions, the Poisson distribution, continuous random variables, normal approximations, population and samples, sampling techniques and hypothesis testing. Mechanics introduces students to Kinematics and dynamics of particles, statics of a particle, moments and vectors. Further Pure 1 investigates complex numbers, numerical solutions, co-ordinate systems, matrix algebra, series notation and proof by induction.

You will choose this option alongside Mathematics A Level, where you will be studying Core 3, Core 4 and Decision Mathematics 1. Further Pure 2 is the only option that has to be covered alongside 2 other modules. Further Pure 2 introduces further complex numbers, first and second order differential equations, MacLaurin and Taylor series and Polar co-ordinates. You will choose two further options from Further Pure 3, Mechanics 2 and Mechanics 3.

There are 2 units, unit 1 is called Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term and unit 2 is called Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term.There is 1 written examination (65% of the mark) and 1 multiple choice examination (35% of the mark) in January on unit 1. The qualification is designed to help individuals make financial plans for the future; understand financial services from the provider’s perspective and enhance their financial capabilities. The course covers essential topics such as product mix, cash flow, product development, product positioning, factors influencing the marketplace, corporate success criteria, stakeholder’s perceptions and effects on the environment. There are 2 units, unit 1 is called Sustainability of an Individual’s Finances and unit 2 is called Sustainability of the Financial Services System.

There is 1 written examination (65% of the mark) and 1 multiple choice examination (35% of the mark) in January on unit 1. There is also a written examination and multiple choice examination in May on unit 2 (same percentages). All 4 exams can be retaken if necessary (March/June). This qualification centres on the study of different media products such as film, television, the internet and printed media. It looks in particular at the themes and issues relevant to media within society and their impact on audiences and development by producers. You will be required to produce, plan and evaluate a piece of media. You will develop analytical skills and examine and deconstruct media texts, whilst formulating case studies that centre upon the fantasy/reality genre, issues of representation and changes in the way technology is influencing media production.

AS Level Unit 1 Investigating Media: You will carry out a cross-media study for an unseen text examination, (2 hour written examination). Unit 2 Creating Media: You will need to produce two media productions in two of the three different media platforms, with an evaluation of the productions (1500 words).

A Level Unit 3 Critical Perspectives: The focus of this unit will be on debates and theories relevant to contemporary and historical media production such as gender representations and the development of digital and other technologies in Media Institutions, (2 hour written examination). Unit 4 Media: Research and Production. This unit has two sections - Critical Investigation- a written piece that explores issues of media consumption (60%) and a linked production piece that reinforces the research conducted, (40%)

You will study a range of traditional and contemporary artists/photographers relevant to a chosen theme. Theme-based photography may include Portraiture, Landscape, Still-Life, Photo-Journalism, Film and Stop Motion. From your completed work at least two units will be chosen to enter the exam process. Layout and presentation are considered important alongside written analysis of images, your own thinking and personal response. The final exam unit will consist of one unit of work from a chosen starting point. You will be allowed a few weeks to prepare and will then create a final piece whilst working in a Photography room, for ten hours, under exam conditions.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 Courses. This course would also work well being studied alongside Graphics, Textiles, Ceramics or Fine Art.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: Future potential in this subject is very broad. Every real image, product, promotional material and media work have involved a Photographer somewhere in the process. Photographers all follow an Art and Design route in Further Education and Higher Education.

AS: For AS Level, you will extend the technical learning from GCSE. You will continue to explore camera settings and ways of manipulating images both digitally and by hand using art/photography materials and processes. You will research the work of others and show you understand the context in which it was created. You will explain the given starting points and ideas, emphasising your own connections to the subjects. You will discuss use of media, technique, meaning, ideas and the influence of artists/photographers on your own work and you are expected to use specialist vocabulary and reference all images and text from other sources. The course will be assessed through completion of a portfolio in A3 journals, supplementary images and final piece/s. There will be a ten hour controlled assignment, taken under exam conditions.

A2: For A2 Level, you will confirm your camera skills and ability to use specialist equipment for studio lighting work and darkroom printing. The emphasis will be on recording, but you will also choose experimental paths relevant to your chosen starting point. You will need to communicate with clarity and demonstrate good subject knowledge by using correct vocabulary when you analyse images and explain your own personal connection to your main focus. The course is assessed through the completion of a Personal Investigation, presented in A3 journals and a Personal Study of 1000-3000 words on a topic related to your area of study. There will also be a fifteen hour controlled assignment, working under exam condition to complete final piece/s, following preparation time. This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level under the new regulations you will need to take all of the assessed units together at the end of the second year of the course, including a repeat of those taken at the end of Year 12.

There are 4 components to this course:

Component 1: Applied anatomy and physiology Students will understand the anatomical/structural and physiological/functional roles performed in the identified systems of the body. The principles of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion – force, centre of mass and stability. Students will understand concepts of energy and how they relate to physical activity and sport.

Component 2: Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education Students are required to show an understanding of the nature and development of skills in sport. Students should have an awareness of the relevant learning theories and how they relate to skill development. At A Level, students will develop a detailed appreciation of the role of memory systems in the acquisition of skill. Students should be able to understand how quantitative data can be generated in appropriate areas of skill acquisition and be able to produce and evaluate the meaning of such data.

Component 3: Practical performance Students will be required to perform in one physical activity, in the role of either player/performer or coach. Students are required to demonstrate their ability to perform a range of skills and techniques in physical activity, make decisions, implement strategies, tactics and/or compositional ideas, and apply knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations while performing physical activity.

Component 4: Performance Analysis and Performance Development Programme In Component 4 students must complete a Performance Analysis and then, based on the results of the analysis, produce a Performance Development Programme (PDP). In the Performance Analysis, in either the role of player/performer or coach, students will investigate two components of a physical activity (one physiological component and either a technical or a tactical component).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above. B grades in English, Science and PE are preferable although cases will be looked at individually. Open to Y12/13 students.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course complements other Advanced Level courses such as Science. It will also prepare you for Higher Education in areas such as Sport Science and Sport Studies. With further training these courses could lead into a variety of careers related to Physical Education and Sport Science such as: Physiotherapist, PE Teacher, Exercise and Fitness Trainer or Sports Development Officer, Nutritionist and many more.

This course is designed to encourage students to develop an enthusiasm for physics; physics practical skills; an understanding of concepts and principles; knowledge and skills; for the study of physics in Higher Education.

The course enables candidates to develop a wide range of skills in data collection as well as looking at ways to analyse data to produce conclusions. The course also develops a logical way of approaching problems and thinking analytically about situations.

At AS level student will cover various topics including the basics behind physical quantities and units and making accurate measurements. They will also cover ideas to do with how forces effect motion, including Newton’s Laws before going onto look at ideas to do with electrons, waves and photons. At the end of the first year you will sit two written papers on these topics allowing you to attain an AS in Physics. At this point you may end the course with a recognised AS in Physics.

In the A Level course students will cover all the above topics in the first year and then will continue into a second year and cover topics such as particle physics, medical physics, astrophysics, as well as looking at ideas such as gravitational and electrical fields and circular motion. At the end of the two year course students will sit 3 written examinations, covering topics from both years of the course. Students will also have a practical endorsement which will be reported separately and comments on their practical skills. It should also be noted their scores awarded for exams in the AS portion of the course DO NOT count towards the A Level grade.

APPLIED SCIENCE (Physics Emphasis)Level: BTEC COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr D Shepherd/Mrs R Holness

This BTEC covers a wide range of science topics in depth. The BTEC qualification is designed for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.

The course covers four units, of which three are mandatory. These are Principles and Applications of Science, Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques and Science Investigation Skills. The fourth unit will be a physics specific unit. The content covered in the mandatory units is similar to that of A Level biology, chemistry and physics, covering a wide range of topics. As a result approximately 50% of this course is on biology and chemistry content. Two units are assessed by external examinations, and the remaining two are assessed by teacher assessed assignments. This is a vocational course, and the focus is split equally between learning content and carrying out practical tasks. The BTEC course gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment in the science sector.

In the final unit of this course, physics specific content such as astronomy and space science will be covered, and it will be assessed by traditional BTEC assignments which are assessed by teachers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above, including any two sciences.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES:You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses that may overlap with Chemistry/Physics. This course supports progression onto some Higher Education courses in science related subjects or more general Higher Education courses.

Many students who study through the BTEC route consider a career in research science, or as technicians in industry. However, with the relevant work experience candidates could progress onto careers in management, teaching or higher level research.

AS: The units are designed to initiate design solutions, develop, test and trial working models and prototypes. In addition to this, candidates are encouraged to develop and sustain imagination, innovation and flair when working with concepts and materials. They are to develop their thinking skills along with their financial capability and entrepreneurial skills. There is one large coursework project and a written exam paper for this course.

A2: The second year of the course is a natural progression into a detailed body of coursework that continues to link to Design in context, exploration of materials and techniques, and development of your own creative ideas. Contextualisation of your project links to designers, companies, outlets and consumer research. There is one large coursework project and a written exam paper for this course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: AS Level: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including Product Design. A2 Level: Pass grade (A - E) at AS Level Product Design. This course would also work well being studied alongside Photography, Graphics, Textiles, Ceramics or Fine Art.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: Successful completion of the course is an excellent basis for progression to a Foundation course in Product Design and an essential step towards a career in any Product Design based industry. Product Design can take you down a number of exciting career paths. There is industrial, product, and automotive design but also fields of work such as computer generated cartoons or CAD for industry. This course could take you into architecture, teaching, manufacturing, advertising or engineering careers. *The A2 course will only run subject to there being sufficient numbers at GCSE and AS Level and available option blocks.

This is a full course GCSE taken across one year. Assessment is by final examination, split 50/50 across two exams. The course follows two units of study, with one exam for each. Unit one is “Making sense of other people” and covers aspects of non-verbal communication, development of personality, stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination and research methods. Unit two is “Understanding Other People” and covers aspects of learning, social influence, sex and gender, aggression and research methods.

This course is a wonderful introduction to Psychology and supplements a number of other subjects across the humanities and sciences. The course is ideally suited to students wanting to continue their study at Level 3 in a social science or humanity subject or who have an interest in psychology or how and why people are the way they are.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: It is a good foundation for making sense of other people and their behaviour and so links well to any course or career that deals with people. The science skills and knowledge gained also cross over to other science and social science subjects.

At Homewood we follow the AQA Psychology AS and A Level courses. These are Level 3 academic science courses. The AS and A’ Level Psychology courses are intended as an introduction to the subject of Psychology as well as giving a sound basis for further study for those who wish to continue the subject at university. The courses are assessed via 100% final written examinations. All students will take the AS examinations at the end of the first year and those continuing on to complete the A Level will then complete the second year of study. The course is made up of a range of different topics that cover many different aspects and areas of Psychology, including Social, Cognitive, Developmental and Abnormal Psychology as well as Research Methodology. You will be examined at the end of the first year and achieve an AS qualification. Anyone leaving the course at this point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level under the new regulations you will need to take all of the assessed units together at the end of the second year of the course, including a repeat of those taken at the end of Year 12. From year 11 onwards, students have the opportunity to study a one year course in Public Services. On completion of this course, students will gain the equivalent of one GCSE. The course is assessed 100% via coursework. The course will involve physical activities through navigation skills and team building exercises as well written tasks. You will look at the different skills that are needed in the public services but also many other careers such as teamwork, communication and leadership. Most work will be related to a variety of uniformed public services such as the Armed Forces, Police, Prison Service as well as non-uniformed public services such as the Health Service, Social services and Education.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course leads onto the Level 3 Public Services and is a course that develops general understanding of the world in which we live and generally prepares students for further study or work. RELIGIOUS STUDIES: PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS Level: AS and A Level COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mr S Goffredi

At Homewood we follow the Edexcel course in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. This course studies the philosophy of religion, religious ethics and the New Testament. The course is assessed entirely by external examination, with three exams each year. The exams are a mix of short answer and essay questions from a range of topics covered and researched over the course. Topics investigated include evil, miracles, religious language, sexual ethics, war and peace, arguments for and against the existence of God, utilitarianism and deontology, the person of Jesus, the works of scholars, social and historical context of the New Testament, scientific responses to belief and the importance of authorship.

You will be examined at the end of the first year and achieve an AS qualification. Anyone leaving the course at this point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level under the new regulations you will need to take all of the assessed units together at the end of the second year of the course, including a repeat of those taken at the end of Year 12. Your AS grade has no bearing on your final A’ level grade.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: AS Level: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including B in English Language and Literature and ERS or similar subject area. Those failing to meet the entry requirements may be considered following an interview with the department.A2 Level: A pass grade (A - E) at AS level.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Religious Studies, which could lead you onto Higher Education to study Philosophy, Theology or Religious Studies. Oxford University identified RS as an “academic subject par excellence” and highly regarded by admissions tutors.

As with the other humanities, Religious Studies is a good foundation for entering employment as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that most employers are looking for, particularly in sectors where people and ideas are the main focus. Religious Studies and Philosophy are well established and recognised subjects at University with many graduates going into business, management, accountancy, media, journalism and law along with careers where the use of critical evaluation of ideas and communication with people is critical.

At Homewood we follow the AQA AS and A level courses. The Sociology courses for both AS and A Level are assessed by 100% final written examinations. All students will complete the AS course in the first year and then those opting to complete the full A level will continue to study the course for the second year. The course covers a wide range of topics including compulsory modules in Education, Methods in Context and Research Methods. In addition students can study optional modules in topics such as Families and Households and Culture and Identity. These topics include ideas about changing patterns of marriage, cohabitation, separation, divorce, child-bearing and the life course and diversity of contemporary family and household structures. It specifically focuses on demographic trends in the UK since 1900. It also covers the significance of educational policies and the role and purpose of education in contemporary society. The use of sociological research methods to study education through sociological methods such as quantitative and qualitative methods of research and their strengths and limitations is also studied.

In A Level Sociology students also complete a compulsory module on Crime and Deviance as well as optional modules in topics such as Beliefs in Society and The Media.

This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. You will be examined at the end of the first year and anyone leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. Spanish is taught in four topic areas. Each one gives the opportunity for students to complete controlled assessment up to A* Level and builds on the work of the previous area.

These areas are: Out and About, Customer Service & Transactions, Personal Information and Future Plans, Education & Work.

How will I learn? In class, you will complete spoken, written, reading and listening activities. Some are similar to those completed in Key Stage 3 with surveys, interviews, radio clips and information leaflets. This course will help you to achieve the English Baccalaureate if you didn’t do a language in Key Stage 4.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: You could take this course to prepare for Advanced Level courses such as an A/AS Level in Modern Languages.

The aims of the qualification are to enable candidates to develop and demonstrate a range of personal, key and employability skills leading to personal effectiveness and to broaden their experience and manage learning through enriched activities.

The Teach Early course is designed for those students who have an interest in education and a desire to become Teachers of the future. To achieve the Certificate of Personal Excellence, students must gain credits by completing challenges, and providing evidence to demonstrate skills development. The course is assessed 100% through the completion of a portfolio demonstrating at least one example of working at the level set for each assessment unit and it is necessary to complete sufficient challenges to achieve the required number of credits. The portfolio will be internally assessed before being sent off to the exam board for moderation. Students will also be given the opportunity of work experience within one of our local Primary Schools to further develop their leadership skills.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A grade C at GCSE in English, Maths and Science.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: This course has been designed for students who are looking at going in to the education industry. Students on this course will be given an insight into the Teacher training offered by Canterbury Christ Church University and encourages, creative and independent thinking as well as developing leadership skills. TEXTILES Level: GCSE COURSE LENGTH: 1 year CONTACT: Mrs Lethbridge or Miss Parry

You will research to find out about the work of Textile Artists, draw out your ideas and develop these to produce a Textile product either a household item, wall hanging or fashion item. This course will allow you to demonstrate your creativity, knowledge of materials and technical making skills. Work will need to be well presented in a sketchbook and mounted onto boards which will be annotated to explain your ideas. You will complete two coursework projects and then an exam, which you will have a few weeks to prepare for researching, generating ideas and producing a final piece within ten hours in the Textile room. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry qualifications are required for Level 2 courses. This course would also work well being studied alongside Photography, Graphics, Ceramics or Fine Art.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES: Everything you wear, have in your house or see and use has been designed by someone. Many of these people have gone through an Art and Design course in Further Education at college or at university. These courses lead to jobs as Fashion designers, Surface Pattern designers, Interior designers, Textile artists or Teachers.

AS: On this course you will explore a full range of Textile techniques using a variety of skills. An annotated developmental sketchbook is a critical part of this course. Through the investigation and research into the work of Artists and Fashion designers you will develop your own individual approach and style which will lead to making a final textile piece or pieces. You will also prepare for and do a final exam which will be to make a Textile item/s in the Textiles room over ten hours.

A2: The second year of the A Level course is a natural progression from AS. It is a detailed body of coursework that continues to link the work of Textiles Artists / Fashion designers to your own work. You will develop a wide range of skills and techniques with the exploration of materials and your individual creativity. A personal investigation will allow you to do an in depth study / investigation (1000 to 3000 words). The final exam project consists of preparation work and a final piece or pieces created in fifteen hours in the Textile rooms. This course is one of the newly reformed A Levels. This course could lead onto a Higher Education course. You could also go straight into a job as an apprentice. THEATRE STUDIES Level: AS and A Level COURSE LENGTH: 1 or 2 years CONTACT: Mrs V Fannon Theatre Studies is designed for students with a keen interest in acting, directing and performing; Students who want a deeper understanding of drama and are interested in studying plays, looking at the work of influential theatre practitioners, analysing live theatre performance and creating performance work of their own. The course is evenly balanced between practical work and academic study. It should be noted that the course requires considerable wider reading from students and progress throughout the course is assessed through a series of regular essays and practical assignments. Students benefit from regular trips to the theatre and workshops or talks from visiting professionals such as Stephen Berkoff.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: AS Level: 5 GCSE or equivalent grades at C or above including English and B in Drama or similar subject area. A2 Level: A pass grade (A - E) at AS level.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing industries in the UK. The first of this two year course consists of three units, with two units being assessed by coursework portfolio and one unit via external assessment.

Unit 1 provides you with an understanding of the industry that can be used as a foundation for further study. Unit 2 looks at how organisations can focus on the customer by identifying and fulfilling their needs and wants, not just in terms of products and services sold, but also any additional services that are required. Finally Unit 3 investigates why the British Isles is a popular destination for many visitors from overseas. The second year of the applied Travel and Tourism course consists of three units as well, one assessed via external assessment and two via a coursework portfolio.

The externally assessed unit will look at what is meant by ‘Responsible Tourism’ which can include alternative, responsible, sustainable, green and ethical tourism. The two coursework units differ from the AS course, one unit is based around a research project, themed ‘Current issues in the travel and tourism industry’ and the second unit will provide you with the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of employment within the industry, titled ‘Working in Travel & Tourism’.

The World Development specification is a response to growing concerns that people in our society in the twenty first century should have an understanding of their role as global citizens and their responsibilities towards global development and sustainability.

The two year course is split into an AS qualification in the first year where students will study two themes: Theme 1 - Development, Resources and Global Citizenship and Theme 2 – Poverty & Inequality

Assessment in this first year consists of a two hour examination sat at the end of the year (35%) and a portfolio consisting of analyses of three articles linked to Theme 1 and a comparison essay linked to Theme 2 (15%).

The second year is the A2 qualification where students study two themes: Theme 3 – Perspectives of Development and Theme 5 – Political Development

Assessment in this second year consists of a three hour examination sat at the end of the year (35%) and a personal research report linked to any of the Themes studied over the two years (15%). Students need to have a passion and desire to learn and enquire about contemporary case studies linked into the theory of development.
