Promotion of geriatric oncology

- Report on SIOG Annual Meeting 2017 in the Belgian Journal of Geriatric Oncology entitled 'Geriatric Oncology: from research to practice: incorporating geriatric oncology into patient care' 0 (see appendix). In this report I also encouraged readers to attend the SIOG Treviso course and the SIOG annual meeting 2018.

- Presentation on geriatric oncology for the yearly congress of oncology and radiotherapy nurses: 'Oncogeriatrie en multidisciplinaire aanpak van ouderen met kanker'. VVRO Jaarcongres 18/11/2017

- Presentation on geriatric oncology for the Seminars in Oncology of the UZ Brussel: 'Geriatric oncology: focus on the older patient with cancer'. Seminars Oncology UZ Brussel 21/12/2017

- Currently finalizing my PhD thesis in geriatric oncology - Advertisements for SIOG Treviso course and SIOG annual meeting were circulated multiple times to all

members of the Belgian Society of Oncology (BSMO) via email and to the members of the Belgian society og gerontology and geriatrics (BVVG) via their website. In addition the advertisements were published in the Belgian Journal of Medical Oncology, which is distributed to all medical oncologists, gastroenterology oncologists and pneumology oncologists in Belgium.

- Announcements for SIOG meetings were also mentioned in all presentations by L Decoster and C Kenis - A non profit organization 'Kom op tegen Kanker' has initiated a working group on 'older patients with cancer' of

which Cindy Kenis, Lore Decoster and Hans Wildiers are members. This non-profit organization is currently running a pilot project which investigates how the social network of older patients with cancer can be enforced and is working on a report on 'Cancer in nursing homes'

- Geriatric oncology will be part of the course 'advanced practice nursing' at the UCCV Gent

Future projects: - UZ Leuven (Hans Wildiers and Cindy Kenis) and UZ Brussel (Lore Decoster) received a grant from a non profit

organization 'Kom op tegen kanker': randomized controlled trial on geriatric assessment and patient participation. - The Belgian Cancer Register in collaboration with UZ Leuven en UZ Brussel received a grant from a non-profit

organization 'Kom op tegen Kanker': observational study to investigate the effect of geriatric screening and assessment on different aspects on the long term.

BRAZIL NR: Manuela Zereu In 2017-2018 we had little but very strong progress in the field of Geriatric Oncology: study groups in geriatric and geriatric oncology have regular meetings not only with physicians and medical students but also with multidisciplinary team. This group published a book to help the understanding of allied aspects of geriatrics. The chapter of geriatric oncology was written by me with the help of some medical students. Next year we will have the permanent participation of geriatric fellows in the program of clinical oncology!

Research An increasing number of research groups in the country address cancer in elderly patients. All university hospitals now have team members that are involved in this research field. Several national scientific societies listed cancer and aging among their research priorities, which enables funding from governmental sources such as ZonMW. Leiden University and Maastricht University have instituted a chair in Geriatric Oncology within the field of medical oncology and epidemiology respectively. Nationally at least 10 PhD students wrote a thesis on cancer in elderly patients in the past year. Within the National breast cancer consortium the TOP (tailored treatment of older patients) consortium has initiated a prospective study of omission of radiotherapy in elderly patients with low risk breast cancer. The study has very good accrual. Prospective national studies in lung cancer (Eldapt study: Deciding through geriatric assessment on the optimal treatment strategy), colon cancer (Aspirin study: Adjuvant treatment (stages 2-3) with aspirin) and breast cancer (Climb study: prospective cohort study in early breast cancer). The national cancer foundation(KWF) and ZonMW have provided funds for studies of predictive geriatric markers in breast cancer (Portret study) and ovarian cancer(Gersoc study) Education Many educational conferences on cancer or cancer treatment have had geriatric oncology in the program. On the other hand, educational conferences on geriatrics often hold sessions on cancer. November 2017: the 7th National Symposium on Geriatric Oncology was organized by the foundation for Geriatric Oncology in the Netherlands (Gerionne) with 300 participants. Members of Gerionne contributed to many national symposia on cancer as well as programs of the national congress for oncology nurses. The institution of chairs in geriatric oncology in Leiden and Maastricht enables further development of courses in geriatric oncology in the medical studies and allied studies. Care Geriatric screening has been introduced nationwide in colorectal cancer care. Geriatric teams increasingly contribute in the multidisciplinary oncology teams and within geriatric teams, specialization on oncology gains popularity. In several hospitals treatment plans for frail elderly cancer patients are now made by dedicated geriatric oncology teams. At a national level several governmental and hospital organizations cooperate to improve individual treatment decisions in daily practice with the implementation of a care pathway that merges cancer pathways, geriatric and general health characteristic and shared decision making.

He will attend the conference in Amsterdam.

SPAIN NR: Raul Cordoba

The Spanish Group of Geriatric Hematology (GEHEG) celebrated two meetings along the year, with one session slot to discuss about our participation in SIOG.

This year 2018, we are giving a travel grant to one GEHEG member to attend SIOG annual meeting after reviewing the abstracts sent for SIOG18.

We organized the 2nd Day of Geriatric Oncology & Hematology, with a final slide of SIOG.

R Cordoba (NR Spain) has included SIOG guidelines and SAVE THE DATE for SIOG18 in all his talks along 2018, including ASCO18 (June 2018), SEHH18 (October 2018) and Saudi Lymphoma Group Annual Meeting (September 2018).

R Cordoba organized a Preceptorship in Lymphoma at Fundacion Jimenez Diaz University Hospital, with a track fully dedicated to Geriatric Hematology, where SIOG guidelines were reviewed and workshops on CGA were conducted.

Members of the GEHEG are working in a book chapter on Geriatric Hematology, highlighting SIOG guidelines and recommendations.
