Defence (Viva/voce) - -

Research focus List of typical research projects.

Research Areas of Focus for M. Pharm. (Pharmaceutics)

The Department of Pharmaceutics has the main focus on the theory of dosage form design including preformulation, formulation studies and manufacturing aspects along with packaging, storage, pharmacokinetic / pharmacodynamic and microbiological aspects as prescribed in Pharmacopoeias and formularies.

Thrust Areas Of Research

1. Enhancement of gastrointestinal bioavailability of poorly soluble / permeable drugs

The new chemical entities coming in the market though have few side effects and are quite safe, are poorly soluble / permeable through gastrointestinal membrane. To enhance their oral bioavailability is thus of great importance.

2. Cyclodextrin based drug delivery system

Newer molecules are very potent and poorly soluble / bioavailable. Hence cyclodextrin based drug delivery systems could be of immense potential for delivering these molecules.

3. Nanotechnology

The buzz word today is nanotechnology which will give altogether a new dimension to the world of formulation development. Solubility enhancement, biotechnology and targeted drug delivery will be few of its applications.

4. Transdermal drugs delivery system

In India this route has been less explored commercially, although being used extensively, internationally. There is a need to work in this area to develop commercially viable prepositions for various molecules in TDDS suitable for Indian climatic conditions.

5. Natural gums as release retardant materials

Synthetic polymer research is a costly affair and still toxicity issues are very common whereas natural gums are much more safe, compatible and could be of vital use in controlled drug delivery systems.

Page 11: Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoancms.sinhgad.edu/pdf/Sinhgad College of Pharmacy - Vadgoan.pdf · Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoan NAME OF THE INSTITUTION Sinhgad Technical

Industry Linkage

The following students are doing their M. Pharm. Project in various industries as shown below :

Sr, No. Name of Student Name of Industry

1. Jaiswal Abhijeet Elder Pharmaceuticals, Mumbai.

2. Kardile Mayur Lupin Research Park, Pune.

3. Mashere Kiran Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Pune.

4. More Krantisagar Glaxo Smithkline, Nashik.

Publications (if any) out of research in last three years out of masters projects

6. Study of moisturizers and emollients

India being a tropical country, there is tremendous variation in climatic conditions. Moisturizer and emollient preparation have huge potential, specifically if innovative and economical availability becomes more.

7. Extrusion and pelletization as a drug delivery platform

Small Pellets as a dosage from are very useful for pediatric and geriatric application due to the ease of administration and also as a controlled drug delivery system.

8. Pharmacokinetic Studies, Bioavailability and Bioequivalence studies

Today probably the fastest growing field is contract research pharmacokinetic studies. Due to the huge pool of student population, if research in this area is initiated with good clinical practice regulations, it can lead to excellent research work on bioavailability and bioequivalence studies of various drug molecules.

9. Targeted / site specific drug delivery systems

Targeted drug delivery has inherent advantages and Liposomal drug delivery is one of the most extensively tried and tested methods to do so. Its commercial viability is also to be exploited.

10. Preformulation, formulation and standardization of ayurvedic and herbal products

With the arrival of 2005, the post GATT era has forced us the making of indigenous formulations. Extensive work has to be done for the proper standardization of these ayurvedic and herbal products

11. Microencapsulation

This process offers wide and various applications in the development of drug delivery system. Controlled drug delivery, taste masking, separation of incompatible drugs etc. are some of them. As well as it can be done by various methods, which can be made commercially viable

Page 18: Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoancms.sinhgad.edu/pdf/Sinhgad College of Pharmacy - Vadgoan.pdf · Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoan NAME OF THE INSTITUTION Sinhgad Technical

1. Anticancer agents – Thienopyrimidine analogues of Gifitinib have been synthesized for anti cancer activity. These may possibly inhibit intracellular phophorylation of tyrosine kinase associated with trans-membrane cell surface receptors.

2. Antihyperlipedimics-The work involves substituted condensed pyrimidines especially thienes, pyrimidines, for cholesterol lowering effect in laboratory animals. Efforts are made to use in vivo models for shorter duration of time as well as in-vitro biochemical models for fast & reliable testing of compounds. A 3D-QSAR study is also being exploited to probe into structural features required for activity.

3. Antihypertensives- This involves work on novel Prazocin analogues selectively acting as antagonist of -1 adrenoreceptor subtypes and will utilize techniques of QSAR, CADD and interactive synthesis and biological evaluation towards lead optimization.

4. Antiulcer-The proposed research aims at development and evaluation of novel molecules (modification of pyridinyl sulfinyl benzimidazole nucleus through isosteric replacement of pyridine and pyrimidine) development and evaluation of milder reversible proton pumps.

5. Antihistaminics- A series of novel pyperazinyl and substitutes pyperazinyl quinazolinones and thienopyrimidinones have been synthesized for antihistaminic activity. Compounds have been evaluated for H1 receptor activity in vitro using a guinea pig ileum preparation.

6. Antimicrobials - Synthesis and evaluation of various heterocyclic molecules for antimicrobial (antibacterial & antifungal) and antitubercular activity will be done.

7. CNS acting drugs – Series of novel triazolo thieno pyrimidine compounds have been synthesized and evaluated against currently available anxiolytic drugs like Alprozolam. The lead compounds show good CNS depressant and anticonvulsant activity.

ENCL-IV

NATURE AND EXTENT OF INVOLVEMENT OF FACULTY AND STUDENTS IN ACADEMIC AFFAIRS/ IMPROVEMENTS

Before the beginning of the academic year each faculty member prepares a month wise plan for lectures and practicals as per University of Pune syllabus for the entire year.

After each lecture the topic taught and the number of present/ absent Students are noted down in a logbook.

Monthly academic monitoring is done for all four years. Students whose attendance falls below requirement (less than 75%) are given an oral warning as well as their parents are informed in few cases they are given written understanding. One of the staff members is appointed as in-charge for academic monitoring committee. The other members of which are the respective class teachers.

The progress and attendance of the students is communicated to their parents/guardians through post twice a year.

A yearly meeting of parents and teachers is arranged to discuss their wards progress, weaknesses, as well as the methodologies adopted for teaching.

There is a representative for each class as well as a class teacher who interacts regularly to discuss various aspects of academics as well as the difficulties of the students.

A syllabus completion report is submitted by each faculty member for all the subjects taught by him/her at the end of the academic year.

MECHANISM/NORMS & PROCEDURE FOR DEMOCRATIC/GOOD GOVERNANCE

Philosophy of Governance :

Though Colleges and Labs have been traditionally called institutions, they have been administered through essentially as organization. Sinhgad Technical Education Society is also on educational organization catering the needs for the development of its institutions. All these institutions are engaged in ‘human processing’ the focal point of governance is ‘the Student,

The philosophy of Sinhgad Technical Education Society has been providing active participation and involvement of Staff concerned in formulating strategies, polices and reviewing the performance of the institute. The hierarchy is complimentary rather than competitive.

Board of Governors:

Therefore the Board of Governors of the Society is a fine blend of Educationists Visionaries,

Page 38: Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoancms.sinhgad.edu/pdf/Sinhgad College of Pharmacy - Vadgoan.pdf · Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoan NAME OF THE INSTITUTION Sinhgad Technical

Academicians, Researchers, Technocrats Scientists and Educational Administrators. There are four distinct bodies Four the governance of the institute.

1) STE Society Board of Trustees / Managing Committee.President [(Chief Managing Trustee),Secretary (Jt. Chief Managing Trustee), Jt Secretary and Members]

2) Appointed Registrars CEO/ Directors:The Society has appointed a Registrar for the Society, Chief Executive officer for each campus, and a battery of Directors in each of functional areas as Director (Project), Director (Administration), Director (Technical Education), Director (Health Sciences) Director (Pharmaceutical Sciences)

3) Governing Council:It is constituted as per the norms of AICTE. ENCL.-VI

STUDENT FEEDBACK ON INSTITUTIONAL GOVERNANCE/FACULTY PERFORMANCE

Student’s feedback is regularly taken for assessment of Faculty and system (facilities available, Infrastructure etc.) in a proforma, specimen copy of which is attached herewith.

ENCL.-VII

GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL MECHANISM FOR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS

Class representatives as well as representative students of each class gives feedback about the faculty, administration and facilities to the class teacher and Principal. This takes care of most of the student problems in day-to-day affairs.

Page 39: Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoancms.sinhgad.edu/pdf/Sinhgad College of Pharmacy - Vadgoan.pdf · Sinhgad College of Pharmacy – Vadgoan NAME OF THE INSTITUTION Sinhgad Technical

In case there is a grievance that is not addressed in regular meetings the principal is informed of the same by the class teacher after interaction with class representative and students. Whenever need arises a common meeting is then held with the principal along with class teacher and class representative/ students. If required a written application is given to the principal, upon which appropriate action is taken.

We also have an academic monitoring committee which includes all the class teachers and an

Academic monitoring Incharge. This committee ensures that regular feedback is taken from the students regarding satisfactory teaching and syllabus coverage by different teachers. It ensures regularity and systematic approach from both sides, students, as well as, teachers and thus helps to improve the overall academic performance of students and thus the college.

Any grievance arising from students, staff or faculty is addressed by Academic Monitoring Committee through discussions with representative from staff and students along with the Principal.ENCL.-VIIIa
