tyDear Friends—

It has been another great year at Books For Africa. As we look back on 2005, wesee many accomplishments in our continuing efforts to ship more and moredonated books to schools and libraries in Africa, and we are pleased to providethis status report to you in the annual report. Specifically, in 2005 Books ForAfrica shipped 64 containers (roughly 1.6 million books) valued at approxi-mately $10.6 million to 15 African countries! We appreciate the support of ourmany financial and book donors in accomplishing these goals. Thank you!

2005 saw the following accomplishments at Books For Africa:• Books shipped from the St. Paul, Minnesota warehouse increased by 62

percent;• $10.6 million in books were shipped on approximately $500,000 in cash (a

21-1 return on financial donations) with a paid staff of only six people;• First ever shipments were made to Djibouti, Rwanda, and Mali (including the

first ever shipment of French-language books) bringing to 26 the totalnumber of African countries served by Books For Africa since 1988;

• Books For Africa presented to the African diplomatic corps—ambassadorsfrom Africa to the United States—at a special session in Washington, D.C;

• The partnership to deliver books to World Food Programme school feedingsites in Africa was completed in partnership with USAID support;

• The Books For Africa / Better World Books partnership reachedapproximately 600 college campuses across the United States and providedapproximately one third of the BFA cash budget and substantial bookdonations; and

• BFA’s membership in the Aid To Africa Federation resulted in sizabledonations through the Federal Combined Charities Campaign.

In thinking back over this year and what it has meant for Books For Africa, weimmediately think of all our friends—new friends, and friends who have beenwith us for some time. As in our personal lives, it is friends that make ourefforts full, lively, and enjoyable. You have made this another banner year. Ithas been a year of considerable growth in number of books shipped, whichmeans children’s lives are being directly touched and enriched because ofbooks and the gift of reading in their lives.

The gift of having a book, which directly relates to the possibility of succeedingfor any child, has been made possible because of you, the friends of Books ForAfrica. On behalf of the children of Africa, we thank you for your generoussupport and encourage your continued support which will enable us to servethose millions of children in Africa who are still waiting for their books.

A Story About a Container of Books

Books For Africa shipped 64 containers ofbooks last year. Each container has a story.

Here is the story of a shipment of books sent toSacred Heart Seminary in Gulu, Uganda throughthe special efforts of Pete Truax, Dan Vaughan andother supporters of Sacred Heart Seminaryworking in Minnesota.

After a successful shipment of books in 2004,including enormous logistical challenges inshipping into war-torn northern Uganda, the needfor more books was still tremendous. Supporters, were determined in the United Statesto send another container to aid the children ofnorthern Uganda afflicted by war. On September 1,2005, at a special reception in St. Paul, Minnesotafor U.S. Ambassador to Uganda Jimmy Kolkerattended by Monsignor Matthew Odong of SacredHeart Seminary, it was announced that funds hadbeen raised ($11,000) for the shipment of a secondcontainer.

The Sacred Heart Seminary newsletter notedthat “On October 3rd the second 40’ container ofbooks through Books For Africa left St. Paul forGulu. The first container provided books to overthirty schools. We hope to continue theseshipments until we can satisfy the needs of all theschools in northern Uganda. Msgr. Matthew alsoasked for books on philosophy and theology foruse in the seminary. Several individuals providedthese religious books. One of them was ArchbishopHarry Flynn who donated 30 grocery bags of booksfrom his personal library that he felt would beexcellent resource material for the library at theseminary.”

Tom Warth, Books For Africa’s founder,continues his walk across Minnesota from

Canada to Iowa. Tom’s walk has raised over $26,000for Books For Africa. Tom has currently reachedHastings, Minnesota and will continue on his trekthis Spring after returning from climbing MountKilimanjaro in Tanzania with a BFA delegation.

Pictured are a group of supporters who walkedwith Tom to the steps of the Minnesota statecapitol.
