Bones of the Lost by Kathy Reichs is the newest installment in the Temperance Brennan forensic an-

thropology mystery series. Tempe finds herself involved in three cases; a young girl run over and left

on the roadway, three mummified dogs illegally smuggled from Peru, and a murder trial involving the

soldier son of her ex-husband’s friend. A card belonging to a recently deceased local business man

found in the girl’s purse leads to a disfigured war veteran and two career criminals. The dogs’ bodies

hint at a disfigured war veteran’s involvement in an illegal smuggling operation. The murder trial,

seemingly unrelated to the other two, becomes the lynchpin to unravelling all of the cases.

This is a strong entry in the long-running series. As always, the forensic science is at the forefront of

the book and the stories are pulled from real cases. Tempe is pensive in this book; worried about, Katie, her daughter

stationed in Afghanistan, her ex, Pete, who is on the verge of re-marrying, and is rocked by a revelation from Andrew

Ryan, her partner and on-again-off-again lover. Despite her worries, Tempe fiercely unearths and follows the clues that

lead her to glimpse an underground world that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Bones of the Lost is available at SVPL. You can read more about Kathy Reichs and Tempe Brennan at

KathyReichs.com.

A Note From The Library Director

Welcome to the first edition of our new newsletter! In the past few months since we reopened as a city-run library, we’ve really enjoyed seeing so many new and familiar faces. We invite your comments and questions and have already implemented many of your suggestions, in-cluding: ◊ Clearer signage, ◊ Providing a guide for using our downloadable re-

sources, ◊ More programs for teens and adults. But please remember, if there is something you see, or something you would like to see happen at the li-brary, please let us know. Book to Film Review: Stephen King’s Book to Film Review: Stephen King’s Book to Film Review: Stephen King’s Book to Film Review: Stephen King’s ItItItIt ByDevonBloore,LibraryAssistant

Halloween is coming up faster than you can say the word, It. If you hate clowns this may not be the book or film for you. That being said, you could very easily develop a debilitating fear of clowns as soon as you sit down to either read the book or watch the film. That’s what happened to me. I saw the film when I was a young child, and I have been deathly afraid of clowns ever since. I have not had the “pleasure” of reading the book, but many have told me that it is the scariest book they have ever read. So when the ghosts and ghouls come out on Halloween night, curl up with Stephen King’s It in book or movie form. Either one will scare the socks off of you. What better way to celebrate spooky Halloween night then curling up with a killer clown that likes to eat children? There is no better way. If you’d like to take this plunge into Stephen King’s abyss, copies of the movie and the book are available to be borrowed at the Simi Valley Public Li-brary. The movie is located in the DVD section right in front of the Customer Service Desk. The book is located in Fiction. Happy Halloween! I hope it’s scary enough.

Spotlight on SVPL Volunteers Meet Peggy Keefer By Cindy Cooper, Library Assistant

When the Library re-opened on July 1, Peggy was one of the first peo-ple to join our Volunteer Team. Having only lived in Simi Valley for a cou-ple years, she visited with her 13 year old granddaughter. When she mentioned how much she liked the library, her granddaughter gave her the idea of volunteering here. It is a nice fit for Peggy since her background includes working in the school system - as a health clerk and occasional assis-tant to the school librarian. Peggy loves to read for pleasure. Her favorite books are mysteries and Chris-tian books with stories. While in the li-brary she also likes to visit the Friends of the Library’s book store. Her hobby is quilting. She enjoys giving her quilts as gifts. You’ll find Peggy in the Children’s area, shelving books with great care. Next time you are here, stop in and say hello.

SVPL and The Domestic Violence Task Force, will

co-host a documentary screening of the award win-

ning Sin by Silence. Shot behind the walls of Cali-

fornia’s oldest prison, Sin by Silence reveals the

lives of extraordinary women who advocate for a

future free from domestic violence. Created by

inmate Brenda Clubine to help abused women speak

out and discover they are not alone, the women of

CWAA, Convicted Women Against Abuse, have

changed the laws for battered women and raised

awareness for those on the outside.

Following the documentary, members of

the Domestic Violence Task Force will lead a dis-

cussion about how to recognize the signs of abuse

and how to get help for those in need.
