Book to Film Review: Atonement by Devon Bloore, Library Assistant

Any bibliophile knows more often than not, the movie counterpart to a much loved book is not nearly as fantastic as the original story. There are exceptions to this rule, however. For example, the book

Atonement written by Ian McEwan is an amazing read and has been transformed into an equally amazing film. The director of the film Joe Wright is known for other great book to film adaptations

such as Pride and Prejudice and the more recent Anna Karenina. Wright’s style brings the tragic

beauty of the book to life in a way that is remarkable. If you haven’t already seen Atonement, read the book first. Only then will you fully appreciate how well Wright has brought the beauty of McEw-

an’s words to life. Revel in the tragedy, romance, betrayal, guilt, and stunning beauty that this story has to offer. You will not regret it. Copies of the book and movie are available at the Simi Valley Pub-

lic Library.

Book Reviews for Adults by Derek Stalcup, Adult Services Librarian

My Life in a Jugular Vein: Three More Years of Snakepit Comics by Ben Snakepit Daily life of a musician/punk rocker/slacker/record store guy Ben Snakepit chronicled in 3 panel

comic strips. This collection spans 3 years, countless parties, shows, and general bumming around Austin, Texas. The poor drawings and simplistic style only adds to the charm of what

could otherwise seem redundant and boring -- daily life chronicling a slacker. Honesty and hilari-ty shine through all the scribbles and poor handwriting conveying genuine slice of life scenes.

CSU Channel Islands (CI) invites the public to sample the compelling work of its faculty in a free lecture series at the Simi Valley Public Library. The lecture series offers community members the opportunity to hear from some of CI’s most dynamic speakers and experts; engage in discussions on a variety of timely, thought-provoking topics; and be a CI student for an evening in the free, convenient setting of their library. All lectures are from 2—3:30pm in the Community Room.

Dr. Harley Baker – February 8 “Some Psychological Benefits of a Secure Relationship With God” Throughout the centuries, religious advocates argued belief in God brings considerable psychological health benefits. Equally vocif-erous, however, opponents argued religion is dangerous to one’s mental health. They both can’t be right, can they? Recent empiri-cal studies demonstrate the quality of the relationship with God makes all the psychological difference. This presentation will ex-plore these studies and offer some insight into why and how this is the case.

Dr. Jose Alamillo – March 8 “Beyond the Latino Sports Hero: The Role of Sports in Creating Communities, Networks and Identities” This presentation focuses on the Latino sporting experience in the United States, from the late 19th century up to the present, with emphasis on professional, school-based and amateur sports. Dr. Alamillo will highlight specific sports in which Latinos are prominent, including baseball, boxing, football, basketball, and soccer.

Dr. Stephen Clarke – April 12 “Latin America’s Most Interesting Leaders” The political map of Latin America has undergone a radical transformation. What was for many decades a continent of brutal mili-tary dictatorships is now a region governed by democratic regimes of very distinct political and economic ideologies. In this talk we will learn more about the challenges facing Latin American countries today, and the progress made, by examining the unique personal stories and political successes of the region’s most charismatic, controversial, and unique leaders, many of whom we rarely hear about in the mainstream U.S. media.
