October 10, 2015 Dear Community Friends, On behalf of the California State Assembly, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 6th Annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF,) “Africa through African lens!” – made possible by Oriki Theater in partnership with the Community School of Music and Arts. Since 2010, not only has this film festival drawn the Silicon Valley community, but out-of-state and international audiences as well. We congratulate SVAFF for bringing 40 films from 17 countries by Africa's seasoned and emerging filmmakers. We especially applaud the Oriki Theater’s dedication to youth development through its school outreach program "Africa in the Classroom Film Series," a program designed to provide Silicon Valley elementary, middle and high schools access to the library for curriculum related films. I am pleased to welcome each of you in celebrating the Silicon Valley African Film Festival’s 6th year of successful community empowerment while we support its continuing efforts. This is an incredible milestone for SVAFF and we look forward to many more film festivals. I would like to thank the Oriki Theater for the tireless commitment to the community, and I wish you all an enjoyable festival. Sincerely,

Richard S. Gordon Assemblyman, 24th District

I welcome you to our 6th Annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival and invite you to this shared journey across the vast richness of the African Continent through the lenses of Africa’s seasoned and emerging filmmakers.

We present our finest and fullest event yet with over 40 films from 17 African countries. I am excited about the quality of films, the range of genres and the diversity of voices represented in the films we have selected. The entire festival weekend has been designed as a showcase and connectivity platform

From the Festival Director Celebrating creativity as the transformational intersection point of arts, science and technology.

for Africa and Silicon Valley creators, innovators and audiences. We offer unique social and artistic visions that will engage our audience in thought-provoking dialogue, and offer film artists and film lovers alike an opportunity to connect.

SVAFF celebrates creativity as the rich and transformational intersection point of arts, science and technology.

Voted Best of Silicon Valley (Metro, March 2015), our festival is the only film festival in California that is exclusively focused on films made by African filmmakers and, crucially, provides audiences with exquisite lenses to the real Africa. Our mission is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans through moving images. We have built a substantial following and have become an annual destination film event in Silicon Valley that draws out of state and international guests.

Our journey from the first year to the sixth has been long but steady. The community has rallied and become the wind beneath our wings. I will like to thank our presenting partner Community School of Music and Arts, our sponsors, donors, staff, advisors, volunteers and festival attendees without whom this festival will not be possible. Special thanks to our filmmakers for sharing their talent and enriching us with their stories.

God bless!

Uzo Amaka was born in Oakland California, to a Nigerian father and American mother. From age’s two to twelve, she was raised in Lagos, Nigeria with her paternal family and then returned to the United States at age twelve. She has grown to embrace both sides of her heritage and loves to visit Nigeria occasionally. She currently lives in Northern California and enjoys traveling, reading, dancing and her new found love in writing. Uzo never set-out to write a book based on her life story, or any other book for that matter, but after years of hearing from people who heard brief synopsis of her upbringing, that she should write a book, she soon took heed to those opinions and began to write. “Ages of Suffocation: Remembered Dreams” is Uzo Amaka’s first book.
