Element 4: Clean work areas
As part of salon policies and procedures, and legislative
requirements you are required to promote a sanitised and safe
work environment.
Sanitation refers to the practical measures designed to
promote hygienic conditions in the workplace environment.
The following salon practical measures that promote hygiene
and safety in service and work areas may apply in your
workplace/training environment;
Good work practices The work area, its fittings, furniture and equipment should be
maintained in good order at all times and thoroughly cleaned with an approved commercial cleaning preparation.
Soiled linen, towels, capes etc should be temporarily stored in a covered container.
All linen, tools and equipment must be used once only and appropriately cleaned and sterilised if required.
All waste materials must be deposited in covered containers and removed frequently
Special attention must be paid to the immediate disposal of sharps into a sharps disposal unit
What happens when there is a spill, food, waste or other potential hazards in the workplace?
Display signage promptly to indicate area unsafe such as;
Spill, wet areas
Sharp edges
Loose wiring
Floor (hair and water)
Clean up all hazardous substances immediately such as, broken glass or chemical products
•Use cleaning and maintenance
equipment to clean up area.
Keeping in mind to use all
equipment safely and read
manufacturers instructions
•Report to appropriate
personnel;
Manager
Senior operator
Team leader
Colleague
Disposal Methods used in the salon Don’t dispose of all waste materials down the
sink. Some hairdressing products contain toxins.
Wrapping waste products and placing them in the rubbish bin may be an alternative, however not all chemicals can be disposed of this way.
Cleaning chemicals to be diluted with water before disposing down the sink
Some sewerage outlets are still flushed out in the ocean, therefore disposal of materials and waste will prevent pollution entering our waterways.
Depending on the way they affect us, chemical substances fall into two groups. These are:
Hazardous
Relatively harmless
The risks associated with chemicals affect the way they should be used and stored. It is important to know:
What chemicals you use
The potential risk of using the chemical
Ways to reduce the risk
Safe handling and storing procedures.
To find out if a product contains a hazardous substance, look at the material safety data sheet supplied for that product.
It is recommended that all chemicals and cleaning agents used in salon environment be stored:
In a cool dry ventilated place
Out of reach of visitors especially children
Preferably in a locked room or cabinet
In their original containers
At ground or low level shelving to avoid accidental spillage
