Imagine you’re looking through the glass of a display window at a prominent mobile company’s storefront. Let’s say you’re shopping for a new phone or casually browsing the store to kill some time. Whatever it may be—what immediately grabs your attention?

More likely than not, your eyes are immediately drawn towards the latest, cutting-edge phone that’s been released. Why? People are naturally attracted to new and shiny things.

Businesses in general have storefront windows and display cases because they want to attract the eyes of the consumers; their potential customers. Therefore, it’s only fitting that they show off their most recent, top-of-the-line products to

everyone who walks by or into the store. It wouldn’t make sense to display outdated products then, right?

Keeping this idea in mind, it’s mind boggling how many businesses continue to have outdated career sites. Staying on top of modern trends and practices when it comes to hiring is essential to who you bring into your company. Without doing so, you won’t attract the type of talent you really want inside your business.

Don’t let an archaic careers page slowly fading on your website get in the way of finding great employees. Take action and recognize what’s wrong with your careers page. If you’re not sure where your website stands, then follow these seven signs it might be time to reboot this crucial part of your company’s hiring process.

This one might seem obvious, but not every business owner is aware that in this day and age, you must have not only a website, but an avenue through which people can get to know your company and apply to your open positions online.

According to a recent article from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), no one wants to fill out paper applications anymore—they’re outdated. No one is going to take your business as a serious employer if you’re lacking a career site. If you don’t have one, build one now!

You already have a career page; great. But is it up to speed with the rest of the industry, including your own competitors? What exactly does a career site consist of?

Just like a storefront window, you want your careers page to be the place where you highlight what’s best about your company, employees and anything else that makes working with your team better than anyplace else.

If your careers site is outdated, difficult to navigate or otherwise unappealing, you could be driving away top talent

Here are some easy ways you can modernize your own career site and attract the eyes of today’s job seekers:

says Sharon Florentine, senior writer for CIO.com, in one of her latest articles.

Give a brief summary of who your company is and what you doCreate and post a video about your company, as well as workplace environmentList anything exceptional about working at your company (perks, benefits, requirements, company core values, etc.)List all of your current open positionsDescribe how your company is active in the communityName any accolades your company has accumulated over the past few years

According to RecruitingSocial.com,

The company site’s role as a recruiting tool is often forgotten.

Your career site is essentially worthless if you’re not providing job seekers with the type of useful information they need to be attracted to your company and apply to your jobs.

Missing Valuable Information

Directions to applyInformation on the hiring process: what can applicants expect?List the next steps in the interview processGive information on who they can contact for any questions or let them know whether or not that’s even an optionPost your open position with appropriate details, such as job responsibilities and requirements

Some things that are absolutely essential to provide on your site are:

Hard to Find

The more work a job seeker has to do just to find opportunities at your company, the less likely they are to engage with you,

says a Mashable.com article on building effective corporate career pages.

For job seekers, it should never be more than a couple of clicks away from your company’s home page. You want to showcase the fact that you’re hiring and looking for talented people to join your team. Don’t be shy; let everyone know! If your career site isn’t listed on a tab on your company home page or available through another button on home screen, then it’s probably time to update the navigation on your website. If you can’t access this function, be sure to ask your web provider or reach out to those who designed your website.

Your career site should never be difficult to find.

This might be one of the most common, yet destructive issues companies have with their career sites: the application process is too long. When creating a career site, you must consider the candidate experience. No one wants to spend an unnecessary amount of time applying to your open positions, especially if your competitors are hiring and offering a more efficient application process.

Top talent has no desire to work in a disrespectful organization with leaders who simply don’t care about the recruiting process,

says a recent Forbes article.

The Application Process Is Too Long

Make candidates upload their resume and cover letter, on top of filling out an application formFill out questionnaires that are unnecessary for candidates at this stage in the hiring processFill out an application process that takes more than 10 minutes

The initial part of the application process is meant to give you a snapshot of the candidate, not an in-depth analysis of every candidate’s personal history. All you should require of candidates when they apply are their resumes and cover letters; that’s all. From there you should be able to analyze who has qualified for the next step in the interview process: the phone screen.

Companies fail on their career site when they make job seekers do the following:

Posting open jobs to your career site isn’t enough when you’re trying to attract talented candidates. You have to tell the world about your latest job openings. Think about how and where your ideal candidates are looking for their next job. These are the locations where your jobs need to be promoted, either in paid ads or organically. Consider job boards, and don’t forget social media. Not only is social media one of the easiest and most efficient ways to draw talent, it’s also the best avenue to attract the younger workforce—the millennials.

Here are some other ways you can help spread the word of your open positions:

Make sure your jobs are shareable on social media sites and share icons with links to your Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and other profiles on your career page Encourage site browsers to share your job on social media to help extend your talent pool to additional interested candidates

Zero Visibility - Lack of Promotion

Consider investing in optimized, sponsored job postings to increase your chances of qualified potential candidates clicking on posts and applying to your jobs (be sure you’re only working with proven job boards and aggregators)Try implementing an employee referral program that offers incentivesCreate a link to your career in your email signature and don’t forget to mention to others that you’re hiring. Sometimes referrals end up being some of your best employees

Regardless of whether or not you’re hiring, be sure your company is connected to social media. Virtually every successful business is partaking in social media and branding itself accordingly. Straying from social media only makes your company appear ancient and isolated to today’s consumers and job seekers.

Similar to having a social media presence, being mobile-accessible to your customers is almost a business necessity nowadays. According to a recent Inc. article,

90 percent of job seekers now utilize mobile devices when looking for a new opportunity.

Companies who are not mobile-friendly to job seekers lose out on access to a substantial portion of the candidate pool.

Not Mobile-friendly

1. Optimize your career site so itlooks great on mobile devices witha mobile specific site or responsivedesign

2. Use mobile-enabled job applicationsso candidates can easily apply fromtheir mobile devices

3. Create automated text-messagesto commu nicate with candidates onmobile devices

4. Provide relevant mobile optimizedcontent so applicants can learnabout your company from theirmobile devices

Here are four tips for improving your mobile recruiting efforts:
