Dear Graduates

Time went by so quickly from the beginning until the end of your iimt studies. In between you acted as models (photo shoot for the iimt homepage); you passed all examinations and completed your theses. You spent several hours in the classroom in 13 different subject areas and found out which student type you were. Among all “normal” bachelor and master students from the University of Fribourg, you, as Executive students, sniffed the air of being a student and had the same feelings: Frustration about learning or course content, fear before an examination takes place, happiness about a good grade or an excellent lecturer. Net-working was also an important factor during your studies. You met about 70 different lecturers and of course your classmates. Many ups and downs along the way to your goal. Finally you got the confirmation for your efforts:

The Executive Diploma or Master of Business Administration in ICT or Utility Management. The iimt staff is very proud of you, but at the same time a bit melancholic: Like parents who let their kids go into the huge wide world. It was a great pleasure to meet all of you, and don’t forget the iimt family.

I wish you all the best for your life: health, happiness and strength.

iimt Leaders Launch 2012

A unique event filled with interesting discussions and exceptional people from academia and industry, in a great atmosphere.

On the 29th of November 2012, the iimt celebrated its annual Leaders Launch - Talk & Dine Event. About 70 persons took part in this unique event and gathered at the Gutenberg Museum in Fribourg. Graduates, academics and leaders from the industry met in a festive and comfortable surrounding.

The programme started at 2:00 p.m. with our annual Award Ceremony where our Graduate students received their EMBA and Diploma in ICT & Utility Management. 17 students have successfully finished their educational programme in "ICT Management or Utility Management". The Graduates, future managers, have completed their educational programme during employment; they gained the analytical, functional and interpersonal skills necessary for success in an increasingly complex and dynamic, global business and management environment. The prize "Best Paper Award 2011" and the prize "Best Management Summary 2012" were as well awarded during the ceremony.

The ceremony was followed by an exciting panel discussion around the topic “Social Media – gadget or real business tool?” with top speakers from the ICT and Utility industry, such as Patrick Comboeuf (SBB), Robert P. Hilty (Xing AG), Patrick Moeschler (Swisscom AG), Kosmas Tsiraktsopoulos (EDÖB) and Tony Wehrstein (IBM). Thomas Mauch (Blogwerk AG) hosted the discussion. It was full of interesting discussions and insight from different Industry perspec-tives.

iimt Executive Programmes

This year the iimt executed the first online session courses for the "Information Management & Decision Suppor t (Module 2)" course in September. For two evenings Dr. Tilo Böhmann introduced the students to the subject of information management and decision making. After an initial problem with the audio, the students got in touch with, at first glance, quite a simple interface. Nevertheless, it proved to be powerful and feature-rich; from supporting discussion panels and feedback requests, to download upload and media exchange, to name but a few.

This ease-of-use had an effect on the students: first of all, the students very quickly lost their fear to interact. Secondly, the tool fostered their curiosity and instinct to play and explore. And finally, the system aligned perfectly for the introductory part of the course.

While the system was captivating, it must be mentioned that Dr. Tilo Böhmann led the way through the lecture brilliantly. He showed his experience of using the system and handled any issues easily. Furthermore, his knowledge in this area allowed him to compensate for the lack of face-to-face communication.

As a conclusion, I would say that this “experiment” with this system should execute again, if it is for an introduction lecture; However, from my experience, using beyond an introductory phase it would cause too many troubles to sustain a high-quality course.

Professor Doctor Teufel at ICSGCE 2012 in Hong Kong

The 2012 IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy Technologies (ICSGCE 2012) took place in Hong Kong, China, during October 26-28, 2012. Participants from 28 countries and regions attended this stimulating conference. This international forum thoroughly examined the challenge of global energy; the environment & energy safety and its management, and the new energy technologies represented by smart grid, energy saving and emission reduction, low-carbon technologies and renewable energy. Excellent keynotes were given by Professor Danny Sutanto from the University of Wollongong and Prof. A. R. Al-Ali, American University of Sharjah.

Prof. Dr. Teufel presented research results of the ePark project by giving a very notable talk entitled: An Analysis of the Swiss Electric Vehicle Market. The Chinese colleagues were especially inter-ested in these findings. This is understandable as the Chinese State Council issued in 2012 the: 2012 to 2020 Energy-Saving and New-Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan which is a popular point of discussion locally in China.

For Prof. Dr. Teufel the ICSGCE 2012 was an excellent platform for discussions around scientific questions. Furthermore, she took the opportunity to introduce the iimt and its possibilities to an international communit y.

ICSGCE 2012 was sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), China Renewable Energy Society (CRES), Journal of Electronic Science and Technology (JEST), and Intercap Energy Systems, USA . Academic support was given by University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Wollongong, American University of Sharjah, and China Energy Association (CEA).

Prof. Dr. Teufel used her stay in Hong Kong to also visit the Chinese University of Hong Kong and in particular the very impressive Hong Kong Science Park.

Prof. Dr. Teufel discussing the results of her presentation with Dr. Huang Qi (UESTC Chengdu)

Lecture of "Innovations- und Technologiemanagement"

The Fall academic semester 2012 is com-ing to an end. The lecture "Innovations- und Technologiemanagement" of Prof. Dr. Teufel and Mario Gstrein was a great success; about 30 students, in Master’s studies, attended this class every Thursday morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

We are looking forward to the next lectures in the Spring academic semester 2013: "Management im Energie-Sektor" and "Strategisches Projektmanage-ment".

Upcoming Masterclass 2013"Relationship with Brands"Thursday - 31th January 2013

Alumni Special Event 2012

iimt Events

On the 3rd of November around 40 iimt Alumni members and their relatives met in Frutigen. After a short aperitif on the terrace, and enjoying the sun, lunch was offered in the Restaurant Rustica.

Right after lunch and a short walk, the participants arrived at the Tropenhaus Frutigen. An interesting presentation was given to show how the Tropenhaus is able to produce caviar and tropical fruits by using renewable energies. Afterwards, all members had time to discover the tropical gardens, the fish farm or the delicacy store for themselves.

The yearly event ended with the General Assembly of the iimt Alumni Network. It was a great day and we are hoping to see you all again next year.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Marc Fetscherin, Associate Professor of Marketing & Cornell Distinguished Faculty

“Over the course of the past decade, companies have come to the realization that one of the most effective tools they have to hedge against risk is the portfolio of relationships consumers form with the company’s brands.

Strong relationships guarantee cash flows in the form of brand loyalties and trial of new brand extensions, create supply-side cost advantages through evangelism and word-of-mouth advocacy, and protect shareholder value in the wake of the crises that inevitably befall brands.

But, as marketers have rushed to build equity though their brand relationships, they have also come to realize that the creation of value through brand relationships is a difficult and challenging task. Brand relationships are complex psychological and cultural phenomena. They must be carefully created, astutely nurtured, and judiciously leveraged if they are to thrive. They require an organization and internal culture aligned in terms of relationship principles and ideas.

Today’s brandscape, enabled through social media and web 2.0 technologies, has fundamentally changed the face of branding, further complicating the rela-tionship building task”1.

T h e p re s ent at ion e x p lore s th e psychological and cultural landscape of consumer-brand relationships, and identifies concepts, frameworks and strategies directed at the hunt for resonant and strong relationships in this new brand world.
