National Hispanic Heritage Month

The third interesting fact about the celebration of the Hispanic Heritage is:

3. The meaning of the date

Have you ever wondered why the celebration of Hispanic Heritage begins

on September 15? Well the reason is because on that day, it is the

anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa

Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. On the other

hand, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September

16 and September 18.

Among other interesting things that I would like to share with you in this

article are the contributions that Hispanics have made not only to the

United States but to the whole world:

THE ROCKET. - Of Peruvian origin, Pedro Paulet is considered one of the

"parents of aeronautics". Developed the first liquid fuel engine suitable for

rockets.

CONCRETE TRASLÚCIDO. - Developed by Mexican engineers Joel Sosa

Gutiérrez and Sergio Omar Galván Cáceres. The translucent concrete

allows to lift walls more resistant and less heavy than traditional concrete,

in addition to allowing the passage of light.

ELECTRIC BRAKE. - Developed by Mexican Víctor Ochoa, using

gravitational force, he manages to reduce speed and stop a train.

THE NUMBER ZERO. - Being one of the pre-hispanic civilizations with an

advanced mathematical system, the Mayans invented the zero

approximately in the year 36 before Christ.

COLOR TELEVISION. - Developed by the Mexican scientist Guillermo

González Camarena.

CONTRACEPTIVE PILL. - Developed by Mexican chemist Luis E.

Miramontes.

These as mentioned above are just some of the many contributions that

the Hispanic community has made and I am proud to serve at Chapel Hill

UMC because it is a community of faith that is open to help and bless the

Hispanic community.

Words from the Pastor

Greetings! As you know, this past week, our

beloved and cherished long time member, Mary

Frances Waggoner, completed this life’s journey

and went on to eternal life with our Lord. I had

the honor of officiating her graveside service with

her family on Thursday afternoon. While this

graveside service gave opportunity for closure for

the family, we at Chapel Hill continue to grieve.

In order to bring closure for Mary Frances’ Chapel

Hill family, we are planning a ‘Celebration of

Life’ for Mary Francis during our morning

worship this coming Sunday, October 7th. Please

plan to be in attendance, and invite anyone in the

community who may have known Mary Frances.

Christian Unity.

Preaching the revival at Lake Highlands was no

easy task (4 sermons in 2 ½ days)! But it was a

joy to share God’s word with our Presbyterian

sisters and brothers. Perhaps we will be able to

have more of these ecumenical activities in the

future. When we participate in the universal

church, it reminds us that we are not alone.

GOD BLESS…….

BIRTHDAY REMINDER: Please let our church office know your birthdate, mm/dd/yyyy, so your church family can acknowledge your

special day. Your ‘year’ will remain private: [email protected]

We had 36 visitors and 20 Chapel Hill members attend our

community party this past Saturday. We wanted to thank all of

our volunteers for giving their time to host games, face

painting, food and hospitality areas. We want to give a special

thanks to Wes Freeman for being our fantastic DJ, Claudia

O’Shea and the Chapel Hill Prep PTA for loaning us their

popcorn and snow cone machine and the UMM for providing

the meal. We couldn’t have done this with without you! This

has been a wonderful opportunity to reach our neighbors. God

is so good!

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY SERVICE

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21ST

October 21st is Laity Sunday and this year we will be “Celebrating

Community Service”. We will acknowledge the areas in which

Chapel Hill members past and present serve the community and we

will have special recognitions Mayor Robert Dye and Mayor Kevin

Falconer who now serve Farmers Branch and Carrollton respectively.

We will also recognize the work done by Fire and Police personnel to

serve our community.

To acknowledge Chapel Hill’s service to the community, we

need your help to know groups/agencies for whom you have

volunteered. For example, Metrocrest Services, Dallas (RHD) Medical

Center, a city Board or Commission, etc. We plan to list these but the

list will only be complete if you let us know. Please complete the

bulletin insert you will find this week and next week, or call or email

the church office or Jan Wooldridge with your organizations.

Please plan to come celebrate with us. Our potluck lunch that day will

be partially provided by men from Christ UMC Plano who will come

cook hamburgers and hotdogs for us. More details to follow. We

hope to see any faces celebrating with us.

SAVE THE DATE: TRUSTEES ALL CHURCH WORKDAY

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2018 9:00AM - 1:00PM

It's that time again! We need all hands on deck to help tidy up the church before the holidays.

The more who help, the sooner it will be finished, so let's all pull together and make

God's house beautiful. If one or two folks from each Sunday School class and the Thursday

night Bible study group will clean their rooms, that would be extra helpful. We need a couple of

folks to mostly dust the staff offices. This workday does NOT include the German School

South wing. After the workday, Adolpho will clean the carpeted area and strip and wax

Fellowship Hall. With all this work, we should be sparking for the events ahead!

Want something in the Newsletter? Send your newsletter article to [email protected] by

8am Friday.

Need to reserve a room or get an event on the

calendar? Please fill out an Event Request Form located on our website:

chapelhillumc.org, email [email protected], or in the

folders on the table in the narthex

Want to have a bulletin insert or announcement

slide? Look at the standards and procedures in the folders on the

narthex table and turn it in by 4pm Thursday.

Have something to celebrate? Email the office with your celebration by Monday at 11am so

that we can put your celebration in our “Hats Off” section to

have everyone know the joy you are experiencing in your life.
