Shiobara Onsen Village is the generic term of the 11 hot spring areas lined along extensive Nasunogahara in the north of Tochigi prefecture to the valley of the Houkigawa River which goes into the mountain range that extends toward northwest. The hot springs is said to have been found in 806, and have healed visitors' body and soul for more than 1200 years. After Shiobara-kaido (Route 400) was open to traffic in 1884, literary figures such as Soseki Natsume, Jun'ichiro Tanizaki and Mokichi Saito visited the village and Konjikiyasha was written by Koyo Ozaki here. Thus, they introduced the beauty of Shiobara Onsen. The village has more than 150 hot springs and is called a hot spring area with the largest amount of water in the northern Kanto. Guides for a walk in the towns and natural surroundings are available.(The word, Onsen Village was used for the 11 hot springs in Shiobara by a novelist, Katai Tayama in "Onsen meguri" (Visiting hot springs) for the first time in Japan in 1918.)
