NOISE CONTROL - A KEY FACTOR
Ask people what they most want at work and they will
probably say a bit of peace and quiet. We may moan about
the noisy neighbours at home but when it comes to the
working environment we complain. The most common
demands are for improved privacy for discourse and reduced
disturbance from intrusive noise.
Noise control has become a key factor for consideration
by those responsible for building design. The designers
challenge is to create an environment that meets an
occupant’s specified acoustic needs. Proper acoustics, the
unobtrusive sum of all sounds, is the key objective for a
comfortable environment.
DELIVERING EXCEPTIONAL ROOM-TO-ROOM SOUND REDUCTION
With over 40 years of expertise we can deliver exceptional
room-to-room sound reduction performance for building
interiors. We provide interior insulation solutions for:

‘CROSS-TALK’ - A COMMON PROBLEM
The sound separation achieved between adjoining rooms or
offices is often severely limited by ‘cross-talk’ via a common
void. This occurs when the transmission loss associated with
this sound path is less than that provided by the primary
separating element, for example, a partition.
Voids affected by ‘cross-talk’ include:
• Suspended ceiling voids at partitions
• Access floor voids below partitions
• Cavities at floor slab edges to façades
RESOLVING THE ISSUE OF ‘CROSS-TALK’
The inclusion of products from the SIDERISE ceiling void
barrier range can normally remedy the problem for the
conditions described above. Where a common voids sits
above the partition it is usual to install the product directly in
line with the partition.
The Sound Reduction Index or SRI (Rw) of the cavity barrier is
not normally required to equal that of the partition itself. This
is due to the presence of other obstructions in the room-to-
room sound path (e.g. the suspended ceiling). The individual
performance of the barrier need only be sufficient to correct
the shortfall between the partition and the untreated cross-
talk path.
SUSPENDED CEILING SYSTEMS
The actual value of these paths can vary substantially.
For ceiling voids, 15-40dB Dnf,w (DnCw) would usually be
associated with most suspended ceiling systems., An acoustic
engineer can assess a minimum SRI value for the cavity
barrier with knowledge of either the existing overall path
value or details of the individual path obstructing elements.
The SIDERISE technical department can assist in this area.
OPEN-CELL AND PERFORATED SUSPENDED CEILINGS
Occasionally conditions arise that demand substantially
higher SRI values of the cavity barrier, such as ceiling voids
formed by open-cell or substantially perforated suspended
ceilings. Twin barrier or multiple element arrangements can
then be employed to accommodate almost all possible sound
performance criteria.
Rw values are for the barrier arrangement alone. Room-to-
room performance (DnCw) would normally be significantly
higher.

NOTE: The analysis is based on the following assumptions:
• Negligible transmission through partition wall itself
• The ceiling void depth is 600mm (a typical value)
• No absorptive soffit lining (higher performances would result if present)
• The ceiling is discontinuous over the partition wall head
• Site installation (to a reasonably good standard) is allowed for.
• The predicted performances are rounded to integer values
