Had the vampire disappeared? Maybe. Was he in danger? Notquite yet. His pale hands were scraped up as well as his knees,as he wore a white tank top over his light blue cargo shorts. Hehad no shoes on either, as he climbed the side of a greatmountain. Roken had stayed at the inn, while the vampirechased his vargul. It was now just a few feet ahead, butTamirith knew he would go further up as he came close. He hadalready slid down once, luckily, closer to the ground. Thetreeline seemed like a distant hope now, as he went higher,Xaou only staring at him before turning to smoke and movingcloser to the top. The night air was bitter and frightening asTamirith gasped, trying to regain his breath.

"Xaou...why are you doing this?"

The vampire then sighed a heavy relief, pulling himself up ontoa ledge. Wiping the sweat from his head, his palm stungbitterly. Trying to soothe the pain, with ice, however, wasalmost impossible, with his diminishing energy. He looked up to

see his bond, and gulped.

"Can we...go home now...?"

The vargul only stared at him blankly, before vanishing andreappearing higher once more. Tamirith felt his musclesthrobbing heavily, but turned to the rock, determined to reachXaou and convince him to return.

With a grunt, the vampire took a firm hold, and pushed himself up. A cool breath left him as he paused, his vision growingblurry. A harsh wind picked up, grabbing at the vampire andthreatening to tear him down. He held on tight, teeth clenchedin frustration. He could see what seemed to be a path thatcurved around to the other side. He desperately reached for theedge, his arm cramping from the strain.

His long fingers barely felt over the surface, and witheverrything he could muster, he pulled up, grabbing with bothhands as-

Crack. The bit of rock gave way, as Tamirith tried to grab atanything he could, finding a hand-hold right as the rocky piecefell. But now, he was turned, barely holding on with one hand, and on the edge of passing out. His golden eyes wanted sobadly to close.

Xaou then began to question his thoughts behind his stunt, butstayed still, suddenly letting out a beautiful though mournfulhowl, knowing he couldn't let his bonded die...not just yet.

The thought of going back to where she had been found by theothers both thrilled her and scared her at the same time. Shehad been taught since birth to respect the shadows and to stayin them, but she was quickly finding that she enjoyed the lighthere as much as she had back home. It was with the knowledge

that she would be in more light, it didn't quite click that it wasnight time, if she went up to the mountains that the faerie girlmade the trek there. On the plus side, the whole climbing thingwouldn't be so bad because she could always use her wings... if they were feeling up to it.

She was half way up the path when a few pebbles rained downon her head and the girl looked up just in time to duck a realrock. She blinked slowly and looked at it, looking up again tosee what it was that had knocked it off the mountain. She hadto squint to see, but it looked like someone was hanging on upthere... maybe? Were her eyes playing tricks on her again?

No you idiot, they aren't playing tricks. There is a person up

there and you should help them, her mind said.

"Yeah, and you're mean, does that mean I should beat you up?"Kyaryn muttered under her breath.

You do that and you hurt yourself. Yeesh. Don't help them then, let them fall to their death.

She sighed, once again she had to listen to the voice in herhead. The girl just didn't have it in her not to help, and theperson probably would die or break something seriously bad if they actually fell. So she focused her eyes above her and half walked half jogged up the trail some more. "Hey! You need

help?" she called over to the person. She could see that thepath curved around to where they were hanging on and shesmiled faintly. "Sweet, makes my job easier," she murmured toherself, then headed in that direction.

(( Edited after realizing it was night >_> still the same, justexchanged a few words for some new ones. ))

Tamirith heard the voice, which was like music to his ears. His

eyes began to refocus, closing once, then opening. His bodyhurt all over, but he could still respond, being sure to stay as

stabilized as he could.

"Yes, I could use a little help!"

The vargul felt a bit of relief, too, but wouldn't show any of it ashe went into his physical form and walked a few steps away.

The vampire tried then to reach up with his other hand, but was

a little too far down for his fingers to catch on the path. A fewdrops of sweat fell from his face, reminding him of the danger

he was in.

Her wings fluttered slightly as the person-- wait it was a guy, confirmed that he needed help. She picked up her pace againinto a jog, making the rest of the distance quickly, thoughleaving her just a bit short of breath. She brushed it off quicklyand went down to her knees above him on the path. She bentover, hand outstretched. "Here, grab on," she said, her otherhand poised to grab him on the off chance he started to slip.

Please don't fall, please don't fall, she thought worriedly. Whileshe would certainly be able to catch him in time, it was gettingher wings to work well enough to carry them both that scaredher. She'd only realized a day or two ago that her arrival onPlanet had hurt her wings slightly.

For that moment in time though she had to brush all otherworries out of her mind so that she could help pull him up andmake sure he didn't fall to his death or massive injury. Yup, thatwasn't a pleasant thought.

A pale, scraped up hand took Kyaryn's, as Tamirith pulledhimself up just enough to catch the path with his other hand. With one great heave, he pushed his body over the edge, rolling just past the Faerie. He took a moment to breathe, easy gaspsrestoring his normal pattern. As with many other near-deathexperienced people, he began to laugh, as he came up to aseated position.

"Oh...thank you... I can't believe how close I was to becoming abloody mess..."

Xaou seemed to stare off bitterly, a mix of odd emotion whirling

about mysteriously in his head.

Tamirith looked to the vargul with a frown, a crease forming athis brow.

"What are you trying to do?! Why can't you stay around and justbe a brute like other Varguls?!"

The Capelian then glared at his bonded, before turning tosmoke.

Perhaps my bonded is too stupid to realize that I am NOT other

Varguls.

He seemed to be headed up the path, upset to be reminded of being nothing more than a phantom. His creamy eyes seemed to

glow with his anger as he drifted off.

Tamirith sighed, looking to Kyaryn, with a half-smile.

"I do apologize. My name is Tamirith, and that was Xaou, takingoff without me again."

The faerie dug her knees into the path to help pull him up sothat he wouldn't strain so much, he looked beat up and tired.

Once he was clear of the edge she let go of his hand, smilingfaintly though it quickly changed to bewilderment as he started

laughing. She couldn't really think of anything to say for amoment, stunned that he was laughing over nearly becoming a

mess at the bottom of the cliff.

"Erm... you're welcome," she said, sitting back on her heels asher wings twitched slightly. She forced her eyes to focus so that

she could see in the shadows of the night. She was then awareof the creature that was standing on the path and she blinked

slowly. "What is--" she stopped herself when the man startedyelling at it.

Varguls? What's a Vargul? she asked herself, tipping her head

slightly. She fought back a gasp as it turned to smoke, after allshe'd seen plenty a faerie turn to smoke... though never a

creature.

Perhaps it is a mean being and it will eat you, came anunwelcome response from her mind.

Oh hush, it's already leaving, she chided. Realizing that Tamirith

had looked at her, the girl smiled back at him. "Oh, it's fine. I'mKyaryn, it's nice to meet you Tamirith... though the

circumstances could have been better," she said, chucklingslightly. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but why were you

scaling the mountain side at night?"

The vampire allowed himself to fall back, his golden eyesstaring up at the stars.

"Yes...I should have stayed home, but I worried that Xaou was

off being upset again...and I was right. I'm not sure what'swrong with him, but he isn't just a beast like others of his kind.

Sure, he will make me angry on purpose, and try to frighteneveryone I meet, but he always has this other mood. That's why

I'm up here. He refuses to come home."

A bitter howl sounded once again, a bit further up and on theother side. Tamirith growled, but gave a defeated sigh as he sat

up again.

"Would you like to come?"

The vampire slowly stood up, a little wobbly from before.Dusting himself off, he looked toward the path, prepared for a

long night.

Kyaryn frowned slightly and tipped her head to the side.

"What... exactly is his kind?" she inquired. She looked in thedirection of the howl and looked at Tamirith as he sat up once

more.

She smiled faintly and nodded. "Sure," she said, rolling to herfeet and dusting off her pants. "Do you know where he's going?

Or is he just wandering aimlessly?"

12 Apr 2010, 12:18am

Softly giving a bitter chuckle, Tamirith looked up, to the peak.

"Probably up there. And he's a Capelian-rank Vargul. Just

wonderful to have, especially when they turn to SMOKE in orderto escape capture. So damn wonderful."

He looked to the girl, shaking his head.

"I'm sorry. I'm just tired from chasing him all over the place,

only to have him leave again the next night. I thought Vargulsliked making people miserable, but I never expected anything

Page 6: Sickness of Men [Open]

like this."

Starting up the path, he groaned, his legs still achy from theclimb.

Xaou was still angry for Tamirith yelling at him, and so kept

going, his pale eyes focusing the the rocky trail beneathe him.

She blinked slowly, her mind processing. So the Vargul turning

to smoke hadn't been a trick on her eyes after all. She smiledslightly, shaking her head. "Well smoke you can follow. Try

having two siblings to watch after fading into the shadows when

you're entire house is covered in them," she said, wrinkling hernose as she called up the memory. "Not a fun day to babysit."

She smiled at him at his apology, shrugging slightly. "It's fine, and understandable. I'd get annoyed too... wait, Vargul's enjoy

making people miserable? That's a bit harsh... is it in theirnature or something?" she inquired, trying to store the

knowledge for later.

Kyaryn followed him up the path easily, not nearly as tired as hewas. She did feel bad for him though, after all, it wasn't fun to

climb a mountain in the dark. To climb it in the dark, almost fallto your death,  AND be sore was a whole other story, and not

one she wished to have to experience.

Tamirith gave a confused stare, deciding not to question the

girl's words. He felt too tired to try to understand. Still, he washappy to explain creatures a bit more.

"Varguls...they aren't the best creatures to have around if you

really want a great...friendship... It seems to be in their natureto cause pain. I think Xaou would be different, if he weren't

bitter all the time..."

The vampire trailed off, hearing an odd noise behind them. Asmall shifting of paws sounded in his ears.

"Be still...something's stalking us..."

Through Tamirith's whisper, one could hear a preparedness tofight something big...

((Ooh, what should it be? XD))

(( Ooo, I don't know. Something horrible xD ))

She frowned slightly, chewing at her bottom lip briefly to tryand understand what he was saying. "So... what exactly keeps

him with you if he keeps running away? I mean, I understandthat you follow him, but if he can turn into smoke, why does he

keep coming back?" she asked, completely confused on thewhole matter.

She paused when he did though, cocking her head at his words

and quickly pulling her wings close to her back. Getting themshredded was not high on her 'to do' list. She waited in silence,

barely breathing, wondering what exactly was behind them.

The vampire turned, stepping around Kyaryn, his golden eyes

peering into the darkness.

"We know you're there!"

Almost as soon as he finished speaking, a huge muscular catappeared to lunge from the shadows, knocking Tamirith down

with a roar.

The vampire growled in anger, doing his best to hold the thing'sheavily fanged muzzle from his face, as he stared into its four

savage eyes.

"Hurry up the path! Xaou is up there!"

Normally Tamirith could have just thrown the panthera, but inthis situation, he was weakened, and could only hold it off for

so long.

The vampire clenched his teeth as the beast dug one set of monstrous claws into his chest and started to pull.

((Oh noes! o.o XD))

The girl could only stare for a moment, mouth gaping at the

four eyed being. "What the hell?" she gasped.

Run idiot!

She didn't know whether to listen to her mind and Tam, or stay

and try to help him.

You stay you'll both be dead. You go and fetch Xaou and maybe

he'll live!

"Works for me," she muttered under her breath as she took off running, trying not to trip over hidden stones all the while

calling for Tamirith's vargul. She hoped that the creature wouldrespond, or maybe feel that his owner was in trouble, or just

help in general. She didn't want to leave the man down there, itwasn't right and it was against her nature, but she couldn't that

thing even with Tamirith's help. So all she could do was hopethat Xaou would hear her.

(( Uh oh... that no good >> ))

ThornOpaque V i l l ager

12 Apr 2010, 9:25pm

Xaou seemed to be busy sulking...again. As he waited quite abit further up the path, he could hear the panthera, and looked

up. Soon, he could hear his bonded's voice. Well, that wasenough for him. He started back, taking off down the path as he

heard more calls for help. He stopped briefly upon seeing thegirl, and giving her a quick glance before he continued on.

Seeing the panthera attack his bond caused his eyes to glowwith rage. No one was going to harm his bonded but him.

Tamirith attempted to freeze the panthera's mouth, but couldn't,

as his energy was so spent. Just as he had to let go of thething, Xaou leapt, turning to his physical form, and ramming the

large cat hard. As it stood back up, it hissed at Xaou, as theCapelian stepped forward with his teeth bared, and his blank

stare angrily falling upon the panthera.

The feline leapt at the vargul, ready to try tearing into him, buthe turned to smoke just as it would have hit. It kept going,

right over the edge of the path, and finding only harsh rocksbelow to catch it. The vargul howled, having received a victory.

Tamirith still lay on the ground, however, his chest cut up, and

his neck being slightly bloody.

Xaou returned to stare at his bonded, knowing that he wasn'tdoing well. Waiting for the girl to return, the Capelian at least

had a plan.

((This always happens... XD))

Kyaryn was dimly aware of the fact that something passed her,

and so after a moment she stopped and felt like an idiot. Well of

course the creature would have noticed its owners distress andthus have passed her, and due to the fact she couldn't see verywell she had missed it... or so she hoped. Hearing the four eyed

creature yowl as it fell was proof enough for her.

She turned back around and jogged/slid down the path, stopping when she spotted Tamirith and Xaou. "Sweet mother

those wounds don't look good," she murmured, crouchingslightly by the man. She looked up at the vargul again,

wondering what they were supposed to do.

Well he obviously needs a healer, that much we can figure. But you don't know your way around. The vargul might, though if it

enjoys causing pain... who knows?

She brushed that thought away, looking between the man andthe creature, knowing that they had to do something soon.

(( So I've come to learn xD ))

14 Apr 2010, 12:42am

Tamirith began to sit up slowly, clenching his teeth as he pushedhimself to stand.

"Don't worry. I was just having a lazy moment."

Xaou only watched, wondering silently if he could carry thevampire. He was still a bit young, so he wasn't sure.

With a slow pace, Tamirith started walking down the trail, withhis hand on his chest to keep the air from it.

"Let's go, then. It's a long way to town from here."

The vargul would pay close attention, and turn to his physicalwhen his bonded couldn't stand anymore. He gave Kyaryn anodd stare, before following after Tamirith.

Kyaryn MilanOpaque V i l lager

14 Apr 2010, 1:15am

Kyaryn gaped at him for a good solid minute at his words. "Alazy moment? A freaking lazy moment? You just held off a foureyed, whatever that thing was, and got wounded, and you laid

Page 10: Sickness of Men [Open]

there having a lazy moment . You're even crazier than I am!"

Let us take a moment to realize that these words were mutteredunder her breath as she followed him. At that particular point in

time though she didn't care if he heard her rant, she was stillstuck on the fact that he called laying there after being 'mauled'

a 'lazy moment'.

She snapped herself out of her little rant as he started speakingagain, saying something about town and a long way to go. She

fell in step beside him and frowned slightly as she noticed hishand on his chest. At that point the faerie wished she had

thought to bring anything on the off chance that something badhad happened, such as bandages, only to remind herself that

she didn't have anything at this moment in time due to the factshe could still hardly find her way around. Oh well, she was

fairly certain that she could rig something up if anything badhappened... again.

14 Apr 2010, 4:35am

The vampire kept his slow pace, though Xaou, in physical form, headbutted him a couple of times to get him to hurry a bit. With

this help, Tamirith chuckled, as he moved along.

"You don't have to push, Xaou. I've got it..."

The vargul then turned to his smoky self, allowing Kyaryn topass. He wasn't angry or anything. He just didn't want his

bonded to feel bad about accepting help. It was odd how he feltaround the vampire now, as if he actually belonged in their tiny

group. He would watch the girl carefully, unsure of her for now.

His bonded, however, tried to act like he was fine, evenhumming as he walked along. It was no surprise that he didn't

notice the bump in his way.

Tripping, the vampire couldn't keep from hitting the ground, tumbling a few feet down the path and stopping, his eyes wide

with shock.

"How did that happen?"

He felt pain all over, and groaned as he sat up this time.

"Do you mind helping me up? I think I may need it."

Kyaryn MilanOpaque V i l lager

15 Apr 2010, 9:56pm

Kyaryn was quite aware that Xaou didn't trust her, or at least

she got that feeling. She brushed it of for the time being

Page 11: Sickness of Men [Open]

though, having a very interesting conversation with herself, luckily for her it was in her head though. She didn't feel like

dealing with weird looks at the moment.

She blinked herself out of her mind and then watched asTamirith tripped over a rock. She skirted over it nimbly, walking

over to him. "You alright?" she asked, holding out a hand to

help him up.

She tipped her head slightly, watching him and trying to judge

how hurt he was.
