A Message from
the President
Dan Scurlock
So far we have had a relatively mild winter and natural gas
prices have fallen, but the drilling of alternate unit wells in the
Haynesville play (and other gas plays) continues. By my observation,
many of these wells appeared to be marginally economic at $4/mcf.
What is the economics at $2.50/mcf? Why not wait until gas prices
rebound? Just a thought.
The January speaker was John Stroud who talked on the Williston Basin and the Bakken Shale. John gave an excellent talk for a big crowd (almost one hundred). The February meeting will be on the evening of Friday February 17. Kevin Hill will present a program on the Geology and Wine of Paso Robles, CA. Seating is limited to one hundred, so get your reservations in early. Morris Nichols has lined up a full slate of speakers through May, but if you have a good suggestion for next year (2012-13), email it to me and I will forward it to next year's Program Chairman.
The Shreveport Geological Society has (had) a geological kit used by members to make presentations to schools. The kit was in a hard-sided brief case and contained various mineral and rock samples. The kit has been misplaced. If you know the whereabouts of the kit or would like to donate to a new one, please contact any member of the Board.
Matthew Chumley is in charge of the “Maps in Schools Program”. The Society has geologic maps of the United States and North America. They are available to be presented to area schools. If

you know of a school that wants or needs these maps, please contact Matthew.
If you have any news or announcements for society members that need to be put on the website or newsletter, contact Kevin or Rachel Hill. Go to the SGS website at any chance you get and see what's new.
In closing, I would like to share a quote my dad gave me a while back. I do not know the author but the quote said “The geologist's dream is modest in girth; it is merely the wish to understand the earth”.

Kevin Hill
Kevin is a consulting geophysicist
with a degree in Geology from LSU. He has
been in the oil business for over 35 years.
His company, Hill Geophysical Consulting, is
celebrating 25 years of success this year.
Kevin's hobby is studying geology around the
globe. He also explores how geology is related to food production.
Four years ago he presented his first talk to the SGS on “The
Geology and Wines of Burgundy France”. He has also presented
talks on Oregon and Israel.
Biography
Abstract
Paso Robles, CA is part of the southern California Coast
Ranges. The Paso Robles Formation of Plio-Pleistocene age consists
of continental sediments that accumulated after the retreat of the
Tertiary sea, an event associated with Late Pliocene diastrophism that
uplifted the Coast Ranges
by folding and thrusting.
The area has a wide
variety of resources, from
oil and gas to farming
and wine making.
A brief talk will
quickly move through the
regional geology down to
the local substrata in and
around the Calcareous Vineyard site. Pictures from Paso Robles
along with rocks from the area will be on display.

Jason Joyce
Biography
Jason was
first introduced to the
Central Coast of
California while
studying chemistry at
Cal Poly in San Luis
Obispo.
After coming
to grips with the fact
that surfing would not
pay the rent, he
moved to San Francisco and spent five years working in the bio-tech
industry as a chemist synthesizing research pharmaceuticals.
Needing a break from the lab and the city, he returned to the
Central Coast for what was planned to be a brief stint as a stainless-
scrubber, grape-puncher, and barrel-mover in Paso Robles.
The fit between the job requirements and Jason's passions
were total and immediate. He took on the job of Assistant Winemaker
at Calcareous for three harvests.
Starting with the 2010 harvest, Jason began work as head
Winemaker at Calcareous, and with the confidence that amazing
vineyards supply, he is ready to bring his passion for winemaking to
your table.

Where will the next generation of geologists come from?
Who will be sitting in my office 15 years from now, leafing through piles of logs, maps and production data looking for that elusive prospect that I missed? I was lucky enough to get a brief glance at a room full of future “geologists” when I volunteered to give a geology talk and USGS map presentation at Apollo Elementary to two of Ms. Cooper's science classes.
I gathered a box full of examples of Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous rocks, along with a Power Point presentation with some slides of volcanoes, continental drift, etc., as well as a few neat fossils and minerals and marched into Ms. Cooper's class. I found out quickly that this wasn't the same science class room that I grew up in. The blackboard was no longer there, and it had been replaced by a Smart Board that allowed Ms. Cooper to put the Power Point right on the board at the front of the class. No more lugging around a projector and laptop! Also, I found out quickly that the kids knew all about the different types of rocks and the process of the rock cycle. They were very excited to show off their knowledge by identifying different types of rocks.

The one thing they hadn't been able to do prior to my visit was see some real world specimens. They knew igneous rocks that took longer to cool had larger crystals, and they had seen pictures but hadn't been able to handle real specimens and see for themselves. As with most things, learning is always easier when you have the examples of what you are studying in front of you. A picture just can't do some things justice, and geology is one of them. Walk a piece of sand stone with ripple marks on it around an elementary school science class, and you will see kids' faces light up and their eyes get big as saucers. They reach out to touch a piece of a world they have read about, but haven't been able to interact with.
I went on to talk a little about oil and gas exploration and other pathways that a budding geologist might want to travel, and was rewarded by one young man telling me he had never thought about being a geologist, but he would now. That is music to my ears. We all have that moment that gave us that little nudge down the path of geology and you can help be the source of that nudge for the next generation of geologists. The SGS has a room full of maps that were donated by the USGS, just waiting for a home. The maps are a great opportunity for us to make our way into classrooms around the area, exposing the future generation to the field of geology and the oil and gas industry!
