NEWS
A spring spin & a Jubilee jamboree Shouldham will be a riot of whirring wheels and celebration in the coming months, with the annual bike ride quickly followed by the Diamond Jubilee party. First off the blocks is the bike ride, when dozens of riders – more than 70 last year – will meet on the Village Green at 11am on Sunday 6th May. We’ll then proceed, at a leisurely pace on quiet roads, through the likes of Barton Bendish, Beachamwell and Gooderstone, with ample resting time at various welcoming pubs en route, be-fore eventually returning to Shouldham in the late afternoon. The round trip, around 25 miles, is suitable for adults and older children. Entrance (payable on the day) is £2 or £5 per family. For more details get in touch with Emma Gibson (348199/[email protected]).
Festivities for the Diamond Jubilee are set for Saturday 2nd June. There’ll be an afternoon tea party on the Green, with music and traditional games provided. We’re also planning to have a fancy-dress competition for adults and children, and a whole-village photo professionally taken, to record the mo-mentous event – so wear your best togs! Please contact Jane Rose-Land ([email protected]) if you can help out on the day, or if you have a collection of 1950s music that we could play . Cake-makers also required!

A new picnic bench is now ready for use on the playing
field, funded by money raised by last year’s village week-
end. Many thanks to Dale for his work in installing it.

Norman Preston
Just before Shouldham News went to press, we
heard the sad news that Norman Preston of The Green had died on 18th March, after a long ill-
ness. Norman was born in the village 83 years ago, lived here all his life, and was a true gentle-man. Although a very private man, he was a tal-
ented gardener and once featured in the Lynn News after growing sunflowers of spectacular size. Norman was also tremendously
strong and, until only last year, could be seen lifting heavy boxes of fruit and veg behind the stalls at Lynn market. There have been Prestons in Shouldham for centuries – the family ran the King’s
Arms between 1854 and 1912; Norman’s uncle was a butcher on Westgate Street; and there are Prestons inscribed on the village
war memorial. Norman was the last to remain here. His funeral
will be held at 12.15pm on April 5th at Mintlyn Crematorium.
King’s Arms Pumpkin Club sprouts again October is a long way off, but it’s now time to be thinking about
planting pumpkin seeds for this year ’s King’s
Arms Pumpkin competition. With a good sum-
mer and a bit of luck, last year’s winner at 33lb
should be easy to beat. All comers welcome.
Look out for more details in the next edition of
Shouldham News.
Village weekend 2012Village weekend 2012Village weekend 2012Village weekend 2012
This year’s village weekend, to begin on Saturday 7th July, looks set to be a corker. The day will kick off with a yard sale around the village, to be followed by a traditional fete at midday. Highlights at the fete include a family dog show, music, stalls, games, refreshments, a barbecue, a grand raffle, tractor rides and the famous greasy pole! In the evening, there’ll be a party at Pearce’s Barn, with live music (dancing to ‘Chibber’) and a hog roast. We also have plans to extend the fun into the following day, Sunday 8th July. See the summer edition of Shouldham News for more details. Meanwhile, all are welcome to join in the fun, planning for the event. The next village weekend meeting will be held at the Chalk & Cheese on Saturday 21st April at 7.30pm.

JOHN MALBYJOHN MALBYJOHN MALBYJOHN MALBY
Sadly, John died at home on February 22nd after a long illness. John loved Shouldham and lived here all his life, never wanting to live anywhere else.
He played football for the village team for years, and later helped run the men’s team and two boys’ teams. He was one of the ‘gang of four’ who organised the Sil-ver Jubilee celebrations, and the first barbecue in the barn for 200 peo-ple. He was always ready to help with village functions, the bike ride, village weekend and flower festival, and was often seen trundling along in his car with the trailer filled with village hall chairs and tables. He took pride in keeping the churchyard looking nice and will probably keep an eye on Tosh, who is taking over.
A big thank you to everyone who has sent cards and letters, messages of condolence and phone calls. It has been a great consolation to me and my family to know that John was so well liked. Thank you to eve-ryone who made donations in his memory; the amount so far totals £980. These donations will be sent to the Swaffham Home Hospice. Thank you once again. Jennifer Malby
Ann and Brian Hullah write…
On Friday, 2nd March, Shouldham church saw some 200 people say farewell to one of the village’s best-loved inhabitants and a very special man: John Malby. Not only a husband, father, brother and grandfather, he was also a great friend to so many people. He did such a lot for Shouldham, often quietly behind the scenes – but especially in main-taining the old churchyard – and was always ready to help anyone with anything. He never moaned or complained about his illness, and re-tained his mischievous sense of humour to the end. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends; most certainly, there will never be an-other John Malby. May he rest in peace.
Clubbing together for cheaper fuel
Would anyone in Shouldham be interested in getting
together to purchase heating oil some time over the
summer? If enough people combined, a lower unit
price could be negotiated, and it would also help re-
duce transport mileage etc. Please contact Lori Allen
(01366 348238/[email protected]).

Carols round the tree
Once again a record number of people attended this event on a not-so-cold evening on the Green. A big thank you to the Harriss family for the mulled cider. A sum of £50 was raised for the West Norfolk Young Car-ers, who wrote to let us know that the money will be used to take the Young Carers on a one-off bowling trip: ‘They will really enjoy this activity and your donation has made it possible.’

Borough Council news
It is a particularly busy time for the Borough Council, with the incinerator debate
continuing to rumble on. As you may well be aware, Caroline Spelman MP has
released £91 million PFI credits to Norfolk County Council towards funding an
incinerator at Saddlebow, King’s Lynn.
King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council is well aware of the mass pub-
lic opposition to an incinerator and supports residents in their opposition. There-
fore, the Borough Council is taking steps to apply for a judicial review as to why
the Secretary of State chose to award the PFI credits, despite not having a broad
consensus of support for the project.
Meanwhile, the Borough Council continues to work towards increasing recycling
rates in West Norfolk and to look for suitable alternatives to incineration.
If you are a keen recycler, keen to improve our environment for future genera-
tions or wish to raise cash for a chosen charity or local school, please visit
www.terracycle.co.uk for details of how you can ‘upcycle’ plastics destined for
landfill and raise 2p per item of waste you collect. Terracycle is able to upcycle
baby-wipe packaging, yoghurt pots, stationery, coffee refill packs, baby-food
packaging (ie Ella’s Kitchen), coffee-machine plastics, toothbrushes and tooth-
paste.
It couldn’t be simpler – ensure the plastic is clean, find a suitable box to post the
plastic, and download a pre-paid address label and send off the parcel to Terracy-
cle.
If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to improve recycling rates in West
Norfolk, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
