Alan Titchmarsh MBE, probably the best-known gardenerin the UK became the patron of Writtle College inNovember 2001.

Although best known as a presenter of Gardeners’ World,Ground Force and How to be a Gardener, over the years Alan has made an enormouscontribution to the horticultural industry.

Having trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Alan spent several years as a horticulturaljournalist before moving into television. His highly successful freelance career in broadcastingand writing includes more than 30 gardening books and twice being named “Gardening Writerof the Year”. He even has a waxwork model at Madam Tussauds in London.

However, it was his enthusiasm and dedication to ‘gardening’ that led the College to presentAlan with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 1999. This was the beginning of his relationshipwith the staff and students of Writtle College.

“You’ve given a lot of ladies a lot of pleasure,” was the wonderful comment made by theQueen when she presented Alan with an MBE for his services to horticulture andbroadcasting. His decision to become patron of Writtle College was just as warmly received, and we value his contribution to our college community.

“Writtle has a wonderful reputation. It is oneof the very best horticultural colleges in theUK and I hope I will be able to help promotethe college in my capacity as patron.”

Alan Titchmarsh

I have also found short courses at Writtle that are not offered elsewhere. Theyprovide excellent value for money, which is a major consideration when takingemployees out of the workplace for training.

After a long career in accounting and banking I took over theGolf Course in 1999 and spent several years acquiring thenecessary machines and equipment.

Having attended the Sports Turf Mechanics Course I nowhave a much better understanding of how everything worksand have greatly improved our ability to identify and deal withany problems that arise.

I estimate that we have recovered the course fees severaltimes over by carrying out our own maintenance and by extending the life ofthe machines.

The teaching standard in the Mechanisation Department at Writtle College isoutstanding and I will certainly follow up with other courses for myself and my staff.
