Our heartfelt thanks go out to… Our board, Shore House staff, Our Shore House intern, The Smith Family, GiGi, and all those who were able to attend our feast!
Our Thanksgiving Feast By Gina Gilanyi
Whenever our Shore House family gets together for celebrations, it is always a fantastic time and this year’s Thanksgiving Feast did not
disappoint! Shore House was filled with good conversation, lots of laughter, and of course the smell of delicious food. Once everyone was situated, Board Member Cathy Smith began our feast with inspirational words of thanks for what Shore House has brought us all.
All of the food was delicious, but I must say that the cornbread pudding and cranberry chutney seemed to be crowd favorites. The excitement did not stop there, the feast was followed by delicious desserts that were not to be missed. As usual, it was a wonderful day to celebrate with our friends for what we are thankful for.

Social Event: New Hope Trip
By: Keith, Kerri, Sam, Jerry
On Saturday November 12th, members and staff
went to New Hope Pennsylvania to spend the day.
For some, this was the first time they had ever been
to New Hope. We met up at Shore House at 10:30
and we left about 11am to arrive in New Hope
around 12:30. We had sandwiches, chips, and
water along the drive. Once we arrived, we split up
into two small groups to explore this beautiful
town.
There was so much to do! We walked along the canal and across the Delaware
Water Gap where the water is spectacularly clean. We also visited some quaint
shops where the people were very friendly. Some of the shops were very
expensive, but window shopping was still a lot fun. To end our trip, we had coffee
and pastries.
All in all everyone had a wonderful time!

Unit Updates
Business & Administration
Members have been busy putting together a Go Fund Me page to raise money for our new minivan
driver. We have researched other online fundraising sites and determined Go Fund Me is the best fit for
us. We have worked with Project Write Now to help us create our member testimonials that will be
used in the site. We have also worked with our accountant to make sure we have the “back of the
house” in order. It has been a great learning experience. Check out our campaign at

Wellness
Traci Burton, Program Manager, Disability Health & Wellness, facilitated a “Your Body is Where You
Live” fitness class. This was a compliment to the “Eat Well, Live Well, Be Well” session she taught last
year. She led members through a series of exercises that could be modified based on each individual’s
level of fitness. Afterward we were treated to a healthy snack, Peanut Butter Protein Ball, as a reward
for our workout. We were each given books with lots of information on exercise and tips on how to lead
an active life. We look forward to her next session.
Research & Development
This past April, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted unanimously
to pass the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 (S. 2680). This meaningful piece of legislation will help
the 68 million Americans who live with mental illness receive treatment. The bipartisan Mental Health
Reform Act strengthens federal coordination of mental health resources, increases reporting on mental
health parity, advances integrated service delivery, supports the mental health workforce, and increases
early access to mental health services.
In addition, the Improving Access to Mental Health Act of 2015 was introduced and addressed additional
mental health needs facing our nation. Specifically it increases beneficiary access to clinical social
worker services, and advances a credible and achievable Medicare agenda.
Members are busy contacting our Senators to urge them to:
1. Amend the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 (S. 2680) to include the provisions outlined in the
Improving Access to Mental Health Act of 2015 (s. 2173)
2. Vote YES on the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 (S. 2680) to pass this comprehensive mental
health legislation.
We urge you to do the same. Given uncertainty of the future of healthcare in general and mental
health care specifically, it is important to be vocal about what are needs are and to make sure our
voice is heard.

Cook and Carry: Session One By Kerri Zeblisky
Shore House started a Cook and Carry program to teach members how to cook
healthy meals on a budget. This program was split into two, two week sessions.
Each week was split into two classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dominic was
our Chef extraordinaire.
On Tuesday we planned our menu and went food shopping. Dominic taught us a
few tips for shopping: buy produce in season, shop the sales especially for meat
and stick to your list.
On Thursday we cooked our meals. We made three meals that we split into 7
dinners for the week. The first week we made Turkey Burgers, Turkey Chili, and a
Mexican Fish (Cod) dish. Our second week we made: Pork chops with Apple Sour
Kraut, Beef Stir-Fry over brown rice and Asian Salmon with snap peas. We had a
surprise dessert for our last session which was an
apple crisp. Dominic was an excellent teacher.
Thanks to Dominic for teaching us, we had a fun
two weeks and cooked some tasty meals.

Safe Keeping: Teen Suicide Prevention and Awareness By Susan Mazzeo
On Thursday November 3, Shore House facilitated a valuable discussion at the Fair Haven
Community Center about teen suicide prevention and awareness.
Four experts in the field participated in the panel discussion and spoke to their experience as it
relates to suicide, stigma and resiliency.
The experts: Dr. Christine Tintorer, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist; Danielle Gasperini, LCSW,
Program Director, Children’s Mobile Response and Stabilization Services; Jim Romer, Clinical
Director Emergency Crisis Services at Monmouth Medical Center and Dr. Andrew Lee, Director
of Counseling and Psychological Services.
Highlights from the discussion included:
Talking about suicide does not create more suicide
Educating yourself about suicide leads to you being part of the solution
Learning to listen nonjudgmentally
Building resilience in children allows them to adapt when things don’t go their way. Five
factors of resilience are: Self-Awareness, Interpersonal Connections, Flexible Thinking,
Self-Regulation and Optimism
A question and answer session followed. Attendees were made aware of resources available to
them in their community and there were plenty of hand- outs available. Shore House is
honored to work alongside the community to bring this important topic to the public.
Never underestimate the pain someone might be in; some are just better at hiding it than
others.

Shore Fit
Staying Fit during the Holiday Season
One Member’s Plan By Sam Ferro
During the holidays, it can be difficult to stay fit and eat healthy. I myself struggle with this. However, this year will be different. I have come up with a plan so I can come away from the holidays without my waistline expanding. Here is my plan to stay fit:
1. Keep Moving: Too much sitting is hazardous to your health. Research has shown, just getting up and doing a light activity for 5 minutes every 30 to 60 minutes reduces the risks of diabetes and other heart disease risk factors. I plan on taking the stairs up the four flights to Shore House
instead of taking the elevator.
2. Fitness Club: to keep motivated, I have enlisted the support of my fellow members. We have weekly a weigh in to keep each other honest. We also received some fitness pointers from Traci Burton, Program Manager, and Disability Health & Wellness.
3. Hydrate: drink plenty of water! I will be drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. My secret weapon is to drink two big glasses of water before a big holiday meal.
4. Exercise Early: I make sure I exercise early so I don’t get distracted later in the day. I walk three days a week at Dorbrook Park with my case manager. She meets me at 7:00 a.m. and we take a brisk 30 minute walk. It is my favorite part of the day.
5. Indulge for a Night, Not a Season: I plan on enjoying the holiday events I attend, but will not take leftovers home. This way I will not be tempted to overeat. I hope you find these tips helpful as well! Happy Holidays.

Standard of the Month By Keith Granit and Mariana DuBose
13. The Clubhouse is located in its own physical space. It is separate from any mental health center or institutional settings, and is impermeable to other programs. The Clubhouse is designed to facilitate the work-ordered day and at the same time be attractive, adequate in size, and convey a sense of respect and dignity.
The Clubhouse gives me a purpose to get up in the morning and gives me something to do for the day. I like the attention from the people who are caring, understanding, and they take the time out to help me. The work order day gives me structure. For example, I enjoy cooking on Thursdays.
