From cutting-edge

menswear scene is

Berlin’s famed nightlife and club culture has fuelled a menswear boom

Visit Aljoscha Augustin and his father at their Berlin menswear store Fein Und Ripp and, aside from the likelihood of
being ofered a glass of beer and meeting his brother, the chances are you will fnd items of clothing you haven’t seen before. This is because the shop specialises in a distinctive 1920s style, including unworn vintage pieces sourced from around Europe, which has led it to become something of a cult destination.
‘We don’t care much for fashion here. We appeal to the man with individual style, who wants clothing that has to be worn for several years before it looks as good as it can. Fashion will have long moved on by then,’ says Augustin.
Somewhat in contrast to Fein Und Ripp is Darklands: co-founded by Campbell McDougall, a Canadian of Scottish ancestry, the store favours the brooding and the minimal, as its name suggests. Darklands’ vast selection, from a wide range of labels, is housed in an equally vast white box-like space on the city’s periphery and is as much a gallery as a store.
‘The scene in Berlin is constantly changing,’ says McDougall. ‘Berlin is often a testing ground for new stores and concepts. Many of them end up not working and some
of them are pop-up shops, so there is this constantly changing list of shops opening and closing, and among them is this core of good, solid shops, many of which have been around for some time.’
These longstanding ventures, and a host of other stores, are helping to seal Berlin’s reputation as being one of Europe’s leading hubs for independent menswear retailers. Notable examples include Burg & Schild which stocks rare denim and items of workwear, otherwise known as ‘heritage’ style; Chelsea Farmers Club, with its bold, dapper suiting and dress shirts; and Soto Store which champions the intelligent, dressed-down style of niche brands including Nanamica, Aspesi and Norse Projects. A larger selection of labels (for men and for women) can be found in

Menswear stores are concentrated in the Mitte district (including in its Scheunenviertel area) Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and in the streets around the zoo. Some aren’t particularly easy to locate, being in ‘non-obvious spaces’, according to McDougall.
Stores that are of the beaten track need to ofer customers something special in order to build a positive reputation. ‘It has become more important to concentrate on good products and good service, to create your own ideas and to become a unique store,’ says Shane Brandenburg, founder of Burg & Schild.

fuelled a menswear boom. ‘Most young people are putting together their look using clothing they fnd in markets and at designer sales along with items from designer friends and pieces that they alter at home,’ he says. ‘The vintage market is very strong here, as is streetwear.’
The independent stores are also thriving because Berlin isn’t dominated by chain stores, according to Wibke Deertz, the founder of AD Deertz. ‘Men here used to shop in the department stores and this led to a demand for more independent menswear stores, of the kind that women have had access to for years,’ she explains. ‘Independent fashion design is not an easy world to get into and menswear has its own challenges – it’s more about focusing on fabric and detail, rather than extreme changes of style. Men can wear what they want in Berlin.’

from the brand’s autumn/winter 2015/16 collection
For devotees of fashion, German designer Markus Lupfer needs no introduction. He is the man who revitalised knitwear,
turning it from the bulky, drab top layer one reaches for on a cold day to a fun fashion staple. Famed for his jumpers adorned with sequined lips, animals and ice cream, he is now known the world over, and is introducing other standout elements to his collections.
His autumn/winter 2015/16 collection is flled with stunning tapestry print minidresses, skirts and bomber jackets, and features innovative tailoring along with lashings of metallics. ‘It is based around a secret garden idea,’ Lupfer explains. ‘There are woodland characters, garden gnomes and forbidden fruit. We have focused on a darker colour palette and opulent fabrics.’ These more brooding shades give the collection a maturity that is balanced with youthful accessories such as woollen hats adorned with cats’ ears, pom poms and jewelled details. When asked about his favourite pairings for autumn and winter, he highlights his sunglasses printed with images of daisies and the ‘oversized foral jacquard parka’ which look ‘really special’ together.
Lupfer attributes his enthusiasm for clothing design to his grandmother who ‘was a huge infuence, and inspired me to get into fashion.’ ‘She was a very glamorous lady. Her
sister was a dressmaker and it was always exciting to visit her place.’ Lupfer decided to study fashion design at the University of Westminster in London where he graduated with a frst-class honours degree. His fnal year collection was sold in Koh Samui, one of London’s most notable boutiques for new design talent and, just four years later, he was awarded the British Fashion Council’s New Generation award. Having lived and been inspired by Germany and the UK, Lupfer praises both countries for shaping his creative eye, with Germany infuencing his technical skills and the UK providing him with a frm foundation in the design process.
One of Lupfer’s most recognisable motifs is the open pair of pouting sequined lips which developed from his habit of signing of his

letters with little hand-drawn lips, signifying a kiss. ‘This was the starting point of the sequin lips,’ Lupfer explains. The lips also tap into Lupfer’s aesthetic, which he describes as ‘contemporary, wearable and with a little bit of humour’, and he sees his clients as being ‘young, fun, looking for an adventure’ and ‘with a sense of humour.’

acclaimed designer takes time out from their busy schedule to think about future generations of designers, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, and this is testament to Lupfer’s character: he may be fun-focused when it comes to his designs, but he is also compassionate and makes it clear that he wants to give something back.
For now though, his focus is on his spring/summer 2016 sunglasses and shoe collections: ‘I am rather excited about both!’ And, unsurprisingly, so are we markuslupfer.com
In particular, Lupfer’s knitwear items embody this youthful, vibrant energy and many contain ‘girly’ tongue-in-cheek references. Sequined jumpers from the spring/summer 2015 collection say ‘Crush’ and ‘Mermaid’, for example, and such pieces are considered by Lupfer to be design pieces that are special but can be worn every day.
By cornering the market in wearable fun fashion that also hints at elegance, Lupfer has caught the eye of some high-profle people. He says that actress Britt Robertson was spotted ‘looking gorgeous’ in a piece from the current collection, and that Beyoncé, Rihanna and Madonna have also been seen in his designs. ‘It is always so exciting to see people in our clothes, especially young and exciting talent,’ he says.
Even after winning awards and seeing his clothing worn by A-list celebrities, Lupfer is determined to help designers who are looking to start their careers. Lupfer describes his proudest achievement as ‘supporting a small group of designers in Ethiopia to develop their collections and help to start their careers.’ Helping to nurture these unknown designers is an experience that Lupfer describes as ‘really rewarding.’ It is not often that an internationally

One of the most exciting recent additions to Berlin defes defnition. Although called the Store, it is
so much more than a retail destination. This expansive space may feature local and international fashion labels, but it also houses a café, beauty salon, barber shop and homeware section, along with a shared working area, with many more facilities in the pipeline.
‘It’s a cultural hub, where people can hang out,’ explains Celia Solf, the Store’s manager. ‘We wanted to create a cosy place that feels like a home, that you can work in, or where you can spend money, but you’re not forced to do anything.’
The Store is part of Soho House Berlin, a private members’ club and hotel located in a landmark building in the Mitte area. It’s immediately apparent that, despite its grand location and vast windows, a relaxed atmosphere pervades. On entering the Store, you’re likely to see a display of vintage-inspired LGR sunglasses and stunning jewellery by Delfna Delettrez. Clothing options here range from international favourites such as Joseph and Alexander Wang to smaller labels including Vetements and Trager Delaney, with some items exclusive to the Store. efortless Parisian chic of AMI. Solf describes the creative direction
driving the Store’s fashion choices as ‘elegant, androgynous and comfortable’, with a focus on lasting quality. ‘All the pieces are additions to your wardrobe that aren’t time sensitive. We like things that you can keep and put on next winter, like a beautiful cashmere pullover,’ she says. Standout items include a range of Rike Feuerstein hats and yellow leather clutches by Jil Sander.
Visitors are also sure to be impressed by the expansive homeware department. The selection draws from the talents of local and international craftspeople, with Berber rugs from Morocco available alongside horsehair mattresses made by Daniel Heer in his atelier just around the corner in Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse: ‘They’re too pretty to put on a bed!’ Solf exclaims.
While here, take time to visit the in-store beauty and grooming facilities, which cater for both genders, with Cheeky providing nail and other treatments, and Neville barber shop ofering beard trims and services for men.

Fresh juices and smoothies, made to order or in small batches, are now easily available in Berlin, and the city is starting to follow in the footsteps of New York and London when it comes to healthy drink options. Unlike mass produced juices, freshly made and, in particular, cold-pressed versions do not undergo heat treatment and therefore appeal to those who are looking for tasty, nutrient-packed alternatives.
A varied range of delicious drinks is available in the city, whether sold in health food cafés or in third-party outlets. For visitors to Berlin who do not have access to a kitchen during their travels, juice bars provide a quick and convenient way of maintaining a healthy diet.

The juices are cold pressed daily and the company says it uses 100% organic ingredients that are locally sourced. There is a focus on seasonal fruit and vegetables, resulting in a frequently changing menu. Alongside these gourmet juices the bar, located at Departmentstore Quartier 206, also sells tonics, nut milks and packaged superfoods. Daluma Juice is a stylish and minimalist juice bar in a trendy area of Mitte. The team serves homemade wraps, juices, smoothies and shots some with witty names, such as Beet Box. This is also a good location for a healthy breakfast or lunch: customers choose their ‘base’ ingredient (such as muesli or chia pudding for breakfast, and quinoa or rice for lunch) and select from an impressive choice of toppings. Daluma Juice has also introduced energy bars. Daluma Juice, Weinbergsweg 3, 10119 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2095 0255, daluma.de

Owner Nils Bernau spotted the health juice trend when he was living in London, and has since brought the concept to Berlin via his smoothie and juice bar, Liquid Garden. A must-try blend is the Kickstarter, featuring orange, lemon, green apple, celery, cabbage, ginger, parsley, avocado, wheatgrass and chilli. Afterwards, instead of throwing the pulp away, Bernau bakes it into gluten-free bread, which he uses for his sandwiches.Liquid Garden, Stargarder Strasse 72, 10437 Berlin, +49 (0)176 8000 3378, facebook.com/liquidgardenberlin

RENÉ LEZARD
When Thomas Schaefer founded the René Lezard label in 1978, he did so with the idea of creating a modern, design-led premium brand that used only the highest quality materials. This philosophy remains at the core of the latest autumn/winter collection. The pieces are elegant and stylish without being trend-driven. Warm fabrics such as cashmere and wool are used throughout the collection, giving the clothes an invitingly tactile look. Those seeking dressier items won’t be disappointed, as there are plenty of silk blouses, along with statement coats in foral jacquard.

Tissot has referenced its heritage in its Chemin des Tourelles range of watches, named after the street in Le Locle, Switzerland, where the brand started to manufacture its timepieces in 1907. In the latest collection, women should seek out the minimalist model with its white leather strap and light-catching face while, for men, the rose gold watch with a deep-brown strap (pictured) is sure to become a staple accessory. This is a key range from the timepiece specialist, which was founded in 1853 and whose headquarters is still located in Chemin des Tourelles.

Но в Берлине именно это и приветствуется».feinundripp.de, darklandsberlin.com,

издательским домом «Do You Read Me?», а также винтажные издания моды, предоставленные «Idea books».

Lupfer

Lupfer
Lupfer
Britt Robertson

Josh Sims
وAspesi و Norse Projects.
